Did I hurt it?

Did I hurt it? - 07/11/10 12:19 PM

Hi guys

This might be kind of a noob question, but I thought I'd ask.

Anyway, Friday night I'd tried my old Holley 770 street avenger on my 440 engine. Well I could not get that thing to idle down to save my life! It would sit at 2500, so I looked for leaks, couldn't see anything? I Adjusted the idle down as much as possivble and it still sat 2000, so I turned it off.

Well.... my engine kept trying to run after the switch was off, and finally died with this ugly grinding noise.
Put the eddy carb back on and it seems to be running just fine, but that noise and diesling was pretty upsetting to me.

I guess I want people's opinions did I do some unforseen damage?

Thanks,
Mike

PS I'm just kicking my self, I should of left well enough alone.

check your timing and ignition

Timing was 18 initial which it tends to like.

Ignition which part? I run a Digital 6 with a blaster coil. They seem to be fine, never had issues with the eddy on it.

My main concerns is what damage did I do to it, by diseling it? Did I hurt the beatrings, pistons, etc? Anything I should be looking for for clues?

thanks

I doubt you hurt anything... when that occurs pull
it into gear... it helps load the engine to stall it

Here is something interesting.

Well I looked at the Holley again. I noticed that on the baseplate, the tube that is supose to be connected to the PCV valve has a plug on it, becuse I don't runa pcv valve! Anyway that plug was tore, and I'm sure not sealing properly. Could this vaccum leak cause part of idle and dieseling issue?

Thanks Mike I needed to hear that, plus thanks for the tip.

I am sure that you didn't hurt it. After run comes mostly form idling too fast. Set the idle speed down and it should take care of it.
The only way timing can effect after running is the fact that setting the timing back also will usually slow the idle at teh same time. Timing itself cannot correct after running. No way can it have an effect on after running as tthe timing effects the spark and teh advance of when the spark is delivered. With after run with the ignition turned off there is no voltae supplied to create spark. The engine idling too fast is creating a diesel ignition effect.
Another cause of after running is hot spots in cumbution chamber Like hot carbon deposites.

Well this is good info to know. I don't think its carbon deposits. This is fairly new engine and the stealthheads are new as of this year.

The idle was real high and that seems to be the culprit. Thanks guys, this is helpful to talk about.

Engine should be fine..................mine idles around 1100rpm , if i shut it down in park/neutral it will run on , so i just stick it in gear when i shut it down , hate hearing the engine running backwards when dieseling.
