Lapeer anyone?

Lapeer anyone? - 06/27/10 01:02 AM

I was planning to take the car to Lapeer tomorrow but I'm not quite ready yet. Would anyone be game to go next weekend? I'm probably good for either Saturday morning or Sunday. Anyone???

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 06/27/10 01:32 AM

Definite maybe.

Though there are a few issues to sort out yet, a certain '08 Challenger is getting closer to test ready. I was hoping for this week but doesn't look like it will happen, not sure yet.

i'm planning on making it out saturday if mikes up for it.

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 06/27/10 02:45 AM

Randy, sounds like Saturday might work for me! Should have the X back from Jake's on Tuesday or Wednesday.Getting the front end issue sorted out,as well as mounting the new slicks!!! BTW...is it a T&T all day,or do they have a race program as well?

TELL US what you find-out ...

also ... have they done any major work on this track in the last 10 or so years ?
Posted By: Labratt

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 06/27/10 12:42 PM

Major work on the track??!!! Not even MINOR work,as far as I know! They NEVER upgrade anything there! Bathrooms are still outhouses! And you still have to go to the concession stand for your time slip! WUWT??? But...it's an easy half hour drive for me!
Posted By: ZIPPY

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 06/27/10 01:01 PM

As it turns out, it might end up being today.

Have to see if the weather will hold out over the next hour and a half or so, looks a little too much like rain for me but I'm not hauling it or making the decision......

WHAT is up with the front tire ?,,,,,that looks a bit concerning ??

Nope, too much rain, maybe next week?

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 06/27/10 06:07 PM

I called the track. They will be open for tnt Saturday from 11am-4pm.Sunday and Monday they will be running tnt from 10am-1:30pm and between elimination rounds. Eliminations start at 2pm Sunday and Monday.

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 06/27/10 07:23 PM

So... 5 hrs. of tnt on saturday sounds like the ticket! Doug, pretty crazy,eh?!!! That's why it's at Jake's! It needed a front end alignment anyway! Probably install some new bushings as well! BTW...what is the concensus on testing a 1" thick 4-hole spacer? Currently running a 1" open spacer. Would it possibly add a little low-end torque? Thanks in advance guys! RandyB

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 06/28/10 12:26 AM

Not far from my grandkids in Attica. How is the track and facilities???
Posted By: Labratt

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 06/28/10 10:51 AM

Track adequate...facilities...not so much! I prefer Ubly, which is 45 min. further for me,but if friends are going to Lapeer,I'll be there,if possible! It's more about hangin' with friends than how good the track is, for me anyway!
Posted By: HardcoreB

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 06/28/10 11:19 AM

So, what day do I need to get the 'hall pass' for?
Posted By: Dartin

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 06/28/10 11:26 AM

Randy, I couldn't agree more. I too like Ubly but it's quite a drive for us.
Sean, I would prefer to go Saturday if possible. I would be happy to get 4 good passes in. Just have to keep an eye on the weather and get all the "honeydo" chores done during the week!

Randy
Posted By: Labratt

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 06/28/10 09:23 PM

Randy, understood! Ubly is quite a hike for you guys! I hope to bring the X and get some runs in with you guys! All depends on my energy level! This is my chemo treatment week. Last day this month will be thursday! I'll have to play it by ear! I still plan on meeting you guys out there even if I leave the car at home! RandyB

Chief, one way or the other,I'll be out there! With or without the GTX! It's at Jake's Automotive right now, looking to purchase an upper control arm to replace my old damaged one! Should make a decision on who I'll get one from tomorrow! BTW...how's Doug been feeling the last week? Better,I hope!

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 06/29/10 10:17 PM

I will honestly say that Lapeer is the only track that actually kinda 'scares' me.
Posted By: B1Fish540

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 06/29/10 10:42 PM

I raced at Lapeer a few times, it's on a country road out in the boonies. Kinda looks like ajunk yard. There were two huge mud puddles at the entrance where you sign in and pay your 20 bucks. The same guy that takes your money looks over your car for a second and makes sure you have helmut. Then you go in and try to find a spot in the pits that is dry and without mud puddles.

The track is narrow but seems fairly flat and straight. Theres two turnoffs, the last one for cars with bad brakes or real fast. Then thers a row of trees at the end, those will definitely stop you. Ofcourse theres no ambulance, and it would take a while for one to get there from the city. I guess you can think of Lapeer as street racing... but legal. I did see some pretty fast cars out there...nice ones too..running in the 8s.

Its a good test n tune place.. although a bit wierd and risky.

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 06/30/10 12:07 AM

I have a different take on LaPeer. I look at it as a very casual, low pressure fun place to tnt at. You can literally make as many laps as you want. Bring you 10 second and slower car, your friends, a bbq and look to have a great time. I'm going to ?Milan for Heads-up Friday night, so I'll be out late but will try to show up and hang for a bit.
Posted By: pro6pakRR

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 06/30/10 12:41 AM

So how many of you guy's are going to be there.Let's have a count ,Doug and me will be there as long as we aren't the only one's going to be there (it's a long haul from Adrian, when Milan is closer)but think a day grilling some dog's and berger's with some new freind's would be nice
Posted By: Labratt

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 06/30/10 03:03 AM

Chief...I'll be out there for a few hours! Won't have the X though! It's getting fixed at Jake's Automotive this week. Plan on racing Sunday,July 11th, up in Ubly, which is a slightly better facility than Lapeer! At least you don't have to venture on over to the concession stand to pick up your time slip!

Looks like we will be there too with Dartin's gold car (a.k.a.-Gold Digger), all looks ok mechanically thus far. I don't know where we'll wind up pitting but, the broken glass AND mud puddles AND bee farms will have something to do with that decision. I look forward to seeing everyone so, if we're not overly social don't take it wrong. We'll be ironing-out bugs and tuning during the short visit. Anyone is welcome to come by and poke fun at me (easy pickings) and ifin' there's anything you'll need...GO SEE RAFFERTY 1st (leave me alone) LOL. J/K I'll do what I can to help. Good luck in-advance and have a safe tow.

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 07/02/10 04:34 AM

Lapeer may be a retro 60s ish kinda strip but the machines that race there are anything but retro...they are cool! I remember a slammed tube chassis 72 Charger that was bad azz. I pitted next to a saweet red 64 Savoy w/500 inch Indy power that ran 10 ohs! I saw an awesome 69 Camaro almost roll from a HUGE wheelstand!

Just didnt wanna leave the wrong impression of Lapeer, the racers and cars are top notch.

I do alot of testing there... have for years... I dont
mind the track surface, I almost always hook good
but if I run 9.0 I have some what a hard time stopping...
the pits....... well thats another story... they are
the pits and the johns... well, glad I'm a guy

No sense in taking the GTX as I haven't touched it, it'd probably do exactly what it did before....and if the Challenger shows up I won't be with it, but maybe Brian will bring it by himself. Don't know, haven't heard a peep out of anybody lately.

I do however expect a detailed report of exactly what happened, hour on the hour, with fully captioned pictures and multiple professional quality videos

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 07/03/10 10:15 PM

Zippy... see the company ride out there but didnt get
a chance to go look at it or talk to the guys...
someone told me that had major smoke coming out of
it on the last pass... I dont know I didnt see it

Doug was at the wheel today and made 4 passes... I
had my mech throttle stop on it set at 1/3 carb opening
and the car was trying to hop... not enough torque
to plant the tires good... I tried a couple of things
to see if that would help but it didnt... tried to
up the launch rpm from 3800 to 4600 but no help I
also tried more tire pressure but no help... I should
have changed the 4-link IC but I didnt feel like
doing that in the heat... Doug made a few passes
at 10.09 so all in all it was a good day.... good
job Doug

Rich,I apologize! I got busy BSing with the guys that I didn't catch the Challenger on video! However, I did get this snapshot of it! As Mike mentioned...it was blowing out a LOT of smoke! Turbo problem? I didn't get a chance to talk to them either! Hope you had a good day with your father! RandyB

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 07/04/10 03:06 AM

N/P, I heard it had something going on but who knows what, was texted that it seemed like vapor lock but don't quite understand how a fuel injected car can have that issue? Unless the psi was way off, then that would explain it.

Too late to ask now, but I'll call for an update tomorrow morning and find out what happened, and will see if it's going to head out again tomorrow or Monday since the track is open both days. Or who knows, there might be some work to do on it first before it can make it out again.

Got some stuff for the house, a few tools I've been wanting and a new exterior door for the garage, spent some time with Mom and Dad so it was a productive day.

You guys picked a nice day to go race, a little warm but not too humid. Next couple are supposed to be nasty weather wise.

I couldnt agree more, you could take a photo from Lapeer 20 years ago and today, the only thing difference would be the same people would have more hair and less gray.
I too have seen some very fast/expensive cars at Lapeer????

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 07/05/10 09:05 PM

ok, i will be there early since it looks like only 2 hours of tnt 11 to 1. i'll be trying out an open spacer vs my 4 hole tappered. i may relash valves to spec hot since it was last done cold to see what that does.

Hey Labrat, Sat. would be a better day to go to ubly it's a test and tune day where Sun. is a raceday;on racedays only 1/8 mile.
Just depends on what you want to do. Saturday is the opie race should have alot of fast cars out of Flint, would love to go , but heading to Carlisle.

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 07/06/10 02:11 AM

I went to YouTube and saw the video you posted Randy B. Nice! Thanks. You can hear the car sligtly breaking up at the top-end...I'm pretty sure the plugs got ruined from overly rich idle mix. Got to get back out with 2 new adjusters and 2 pushrods, maybe throw a set of plugs in it too. MAYBE then she'll run like it's supposed to? And just for good measure
Forgot to ask Randy B...did you get my PM reply?

well,it was nice to finaly meet you guys, great bunch of guys. i had a good time out there, but only made 5 passes with a 10.78@125 as my best. did'nt get a chance to try runnin without the 4 hole because the 50cc pumps hit the intake carb flange without the spacer,so i'm getting a open spacer and going to ubly sunday. sorry greg, i did'nt get to checkout your charger. who's going to ubly this next sunday?

Nice to finally meet you Dave.

... I
had my mech throttle stop on it set at 1/3 carb opening
and the car was trying to hop... not enough torque
to plant the tires good... I tried a couple of things
to see if that would help but it didnt... tried to
up the launch rpm from 3800 to 4600 but no help I
also tried more tire pressure but no help... I should
have changed the 4-link IC but I didnt feel like
doing that in the heat... Doug made a few passes
at 10.09 so all in all it was a good day.... good
job Doug

I was just talking about that on the way home from Lapeer. Not enough power applied to get the current IC working. When Randy came over to say hello I told him to 'get over there and slap him in the face' to get the adrenalin workin'...Later on in the day he told me he slapped you Raff...I meant to hit Doug instead. LOL! Now both you guys are gonna be pissed at me. Seriously jumping into a short wheelbase fast car will take some time getting used to and your doing good Doug. Just remember there are 2 speeds OFF and WFO!

Eddie, thanks for the info and clarification on 1/8 vs. 1/4 mile! So... if saturday is this opie race, when are they doing the 1/4 mile T&T? Sean,Thanks for the valve adjusting technique info! Is there a particular sequence to follow,as far as cylinders go? Do you start with #1 and go along...8-4-3-6-5-7-2?

Honestly, no. I just pick a rocker that's at lash and adjust it, bouncing along one bank(side) at a time. It makes it easier on the monkey spinning the engine over LOL. Going to bed, see you fellas in the morning.

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 07/08/10 06:10 PM

Looks like Ubly's out of the question for this week-end! I've been having neck issues all week long! Finally went to my chiro yesterday and it was REALLY locked up! Woke up this morning with a headache!...and today, it's still hard to turn my head in either direction! Doc said I should lay low for a while...at least until my range of motion gets restored! So...the racing will have to wait! RandyB

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 07/08/10 07:03 PM

i'v talked to alot of people lately with neck pain. i have the same problem, comes and go's. must be stress related, look at the world we now live in.
Posted By: Labratt

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 07/08/10 07:13 PM

Dave...wish mine was stress-related,I could make a good case for that as well, but unfortunately it's my spinal stenosis and bone spurring acting up! I originally took a leave of absense from work in March to get a much needed 3-level disc fusion done,but...the platelet levels in my blood dropped lower than my oncologist wanted to see!...so I've gone through 5 series of chemo treatments, and hopefully only 1 left, in September! Then...onto the neck, hopefully!!! Sorry for the rambling! Dave, have fun out at Ubly saturday! RandyB

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 07/08/10 08:39 PM

Well now I don't feel bad we're not meeting up this weekend (because we weren't ready)...I feel worse knowing this news. Let me know if there's anything you need Rand. We all will be out soon, healthy on all fronts.

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 07/08/10 08:50 PM

Thank You Sean! I value your friendship! My family, friends, and attitude are what keep me motivated to get healthy! A LOT of people can't believe I'm on chemo! I've been real fortunate there have been few negative side-effects! BTW...I was going to check on motels for the Martin event on the 17th and 18th...are ya game for a "road trip"??? It would be FUN! Just going as a spectator/unprofessional photo taker! Let Me Know ASAP! Thanks! RandyB

Re: Lapeer anyone? - 07/08/10 11:18 PM

Randy, sorry to here about the neck pain, I was looking forward to making it out to Ubly to run the car and meet a few more people from the board but now with it changed to saturday I can't make it. And with your neck pain the X won't be there, I wanted to see how much faster the X is with that new control arm . Get the rest like the Doc said there will be plenty of time to get out to the track.
