Ye ol 383 finally got a snail !!!!!!!! - 06/21/10 01:35 AM

Well i pulled a all nighter on friday and finnaly got a snail on the old worn out 383 in the Belvedere.

Setup so far.
Really tired and abused 383 smokes bad, but still held its own when needed !!!!!!

280/480 Comp Cam.

Edy Torker 383.

Mallory dual point dizzy.

Holley 750 with Proform body modified by yours trully for Blowthru.

Specter carb hat.

One GT45 Y2004K turbo with a 1.05 A/R housing, I have 2 but didnt think the poor tired 383 could spool both, both bought off of Ebay.

I know you guys are gonna rip on me for useing Ebay stuff but from the sources I have I acquired verry good info about what I bought that have been on a car for over a year now.

A set of stainless block hugger headers, Also from Ebay, thay have verry thick flanges and look to good for the motor being all shiny and stuff!!!!

I plumbed the turbo with 2.5 pipe I bent up myself that y together and poke up thru the hole in the K member.

One 4" Hooker U bend I had layin around worked good for the Turbo to carb pipe.

Ebay silicone couplers.

4 hose clamps witch hold it together but dont work verry well, like i said it was a allnighter.

I have 2 53mm BOV and 2 60mm wastegates all bought from Ebay from Wyntomn.

I dont have the wastegate or BOV installed yet, Allnighter again 6:30 saturday morning it was runnin.

I dont have a boost refrenced pump yet either, just the old mechanical Holley.

It has a 3400 Precision converter that was already in the car.

3.91 gear with 29/9 Goodyear slicks.

As for the test results we had today in the back alley, it shure does get after those 29/9 Goodyear slicks and blows lots of black smoke!!!!!!!!!!!

No boost guage yet either.

Ill try to get the vid working, my buddy recorded some of the foolishness!!!!!!

If you guys have anny tips i can use for a budget turbo deal give me a shout.

You fired up the engine and did a burnout with no form of boost control? Brave man! I'd get that wastegate on ASAP before you scatter the engine.

Other than that, good job!

And get that fuel pump boost-referenced!
Keep your sacrificial lamb together so you can learn as much as possible on the first engine!

OTH - congrats!

Yea i know im playin on thin ice without a wastegate and boost guage but its a MOPAR BABY !!!! and they can take the abuse better than annything i know.

I did get the BOV on it tonight.

Boost guage and wastegate commin soon!!!!!

When I first played with my motor, I had the blow off valve reference plumbed wrong. Turbos made funny noises

BOV works grate!!! but thanks for the concern

Still trying to figure out the vid.

It runs like a scalded cat !!!!!!!!!

I got the boost guage today but no time to install it.

Yeah I ran an e-bay bousch (for an Audi) $38 BOV on my s/c'd 440. Worked fine...but I was only pushing 6psi of boost. You might want to look into Meth injection.

Yea i was thinking a bout meth injection, i got a cheater plate under the carb at the moment but its not hooked up yet.

Is thare anny cheap ways to do a meth injection deal?

I dont want to buy a premaid kit.

I guess you could rig something but the pre-made kit is only $249 and works as your boost hits. Shipping was free.
I just bought this kit yesterday for my 440-6
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayIS...RK%3AMEWNX%3AIT
guy has good prices.

Make sure you externally reference the power valve if it's a suck thru setup - if you run lean under boost, you will cook it quick!

I have a 70 383 Challenger w/ AC, that I turbo'd in '79 and I had to cobble together / cut /weld parts from other kits to make it work and look right. It used TRW forged pistons for the 2bbl 383 (8.25 comp)It ran incredibly strong - had water/methonal injection above the carb airhorn, allowed me to run 34-36 degrees advance, but you had it bring it in a litle later.

I used a an oil cooler just for the Turbo, and a homebuilt hydraulic accumulator to feed it after shutdown - though it would still coke up the turbo bearings after awhile.

AT first I ran it w/o a wastgate, but I had a boost gauge to monitor. Most boost ever was about
22lbs, but finally installed wastegate w/ 11 lbs
and it worked well

Re: Ye ol 383 finally got a snail !!!!!!!! - 06/25/10 12:16 AM

you can boost ref the pump by hammering a 1/8" flaired fitting into the top. That's what I did on my old S/C'd 440. There should be a small hole on the top or side of the fuel pump, I think it's a vent. Get a piece of tubing and just tap it in, atttach the vaccum line and you're done.

Re: Ye ol 383 finally got a snail !!!!!!!! - 06/25/10 03:29 AM

It's a blow thru setup not suck thru, but thanks for the concern.

Yea I boost referenced my pump, What the max boost i can run with my mechanical pump?

I havent installed the guage yet but I will be puttin in some time on it tomorow night.

After what a difference one turbo can do to this old 383 I cant waight till I hang my 80s on my Indy wedge!!!!

Hey Mr Yuck !!!!!

Let me know how that meth kit works.

I dont plan on intercooling my Belvedere for a while and that kit you showed me just fits in the budget.

will do. The guy told me he picked up 67hp on a 427 3x2 vette with it. And that's on pump gas. make sure you get the boost kit and not the one for N/A. One runs of the vaccum signal one runs of a boost signal.

Re: Ye ol 383 finally got a snail !!!!!!!! - 06/26/10 02:49 AM

So I finnaly got the boost guage hooked up and to my suprise I can get 20 psi of boost with this ol heap !!!!!!

She really starts motivatin at 12 psi then the engine flares and 20 shows on the dial, its time I get that wastegate hooked up

I bidnt get to test much due to bad storm rolling threw but Ill beat on it a bit tomorow.

Ol 383 seems to like it, it quit smokin !!!!!!

What you guys think the ol heap is capable of for horsepower with this kind of boost?

How long and how much boost you guys think the cast pistons will withstand?

I have it runnin on E85, Timing set at 30.

Re: Ye ol 383 finally got a snail !!!!!!!! - 06/26/10 04:44 AM

I had a 383 in my old truck and it had a stone stock long block with a 270* .470" comp cam. It only had 110 lbs of cranking compression. I ran up to 15 lbs of boost on 91 pump gas and ran a best of 12.64@110. Thought that MPH was pretty good for a full size truck with a nearly stock engine... Minus the turbo.

If it doesn't detonate the cast pistons should live for a while. If it does detonate, they may last a few minutes. Sustained operation beyond 5-7 lb they will probably get iffy.

Re: Ye ol 383 finally got a snail !!!!!!!! - 06/26/10 11:08 PM

He has it on E85 which should help stave off detonation. Make sure it doesn't lean out either. Melted cast pistons aren't any better than detonated ones.

I insatalled the wastegate finally, didnt do much testing though, Boost still went to 15 when i did a little scratch when i parked it.

I have the wastegate referenc line on the bottom tied in to the referenced fuel pump hose from the carb hat, and the top nipple left open to atmoshere.

I think thats right?

And the screw on top is all the way out, 14-17 I think is what the spring is setup for.

Re: Ye ol 383 finally got a snail !!!!!!!! - 07/14/10 01:06 PM

Your waistegate and boost gauge should be hooked up under the carb right into the intake and the regulator should be referenced off the hat.

Do this and you'll be good.
The line off the top of the wastegate is there to let you slip a little boost on top of the valve. That will increase pressure. Be sure to use some sort of adjustable valve. If you dump unrestricted boost pressure in there (like taking a line directly off the carb hat) it will never open. That's a beautiful way to nuke an engine.

Re: Ye ol 383 finally got a snail !!!!!!!! - 07/14/10 11:50 PM

I prefer the wastgate to be refrenced before the carb as it helps control part throttle boost.

Re: Ye ol 383 finally got a snail !!!!!!!! - 07/16/10 06:09 AM

Yes I have it referenced to the hat,

Played with it a little tonight, backed timing off to 25 and set wastegate to about 10-12.

It's sort of a pooch now LOL!!!!!

I was thinkin a bout pullin it and throwin it on the dyno to see what she's got.

So all you guys running boost referenced mechanical fuel pumps, what size fuel line, stock pickup, let me know what works.

Anny one running this setup at the track?
