Hydraulic Roller Cams/Lifters for 340 - Drop-in?

Hydraulic Roller Cams/Lifters for 340 - Drop-in? - 06/17/10 05:47 PM

I have to pull the 340 out of my demon to replace the clutch and rear main seal (and to repaint block) and was going to go with a different cam while it was out. Is there a manufacturer that makes a hydraulic roller cam and lifters that are a drop-in application? I don't want to take the engine apart to modify it for a roller cam and will stick to a hydraulic flat tappet if necessary. The engine is an early 70's 340 block. I would really like to know what's out there though and what works from your experiences. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Last time I check there was none, but Hughes Engines had a news item about something like that coming out, the release date has come and gone, and no new announcment, so I guess it's not ready yet. Better call and ask them?
Brian from IMM user IMM/OU812 has worked on something like that in the past, but IIRC it never materialized.
Better check with him to make sure.

Please update on your findings (I don't like to call about stuff I am not ready to buy just yet).

I was eyeing up one of these hyd roller kits myself. I was wondering the same thing about needing any mods. I guess I could email the seller and ask. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayIS...RK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

If you use the Crane hyd roller re-fit lifters the hyd roller cam is a drop in, no modifications are necessary. If your valve springs have enough pressure your good to go...

I receive this response from the seller: (It is a drop in so no block work is needed. Thanks)

Every block is a tad different of course...

Eliminate the middle man and call Lunati direct.
I'm sure they will know.

We are working on a deal with a manufacturer to use same bodies as our Solid Rollers and same offset link bars.

Guys, thanks for all the responses. First, Dave congrats on the incredible runs your car has made in the FAST series. Second, Brian do you have any idea when you would have those available if in fact you get the deal done? I'd prefer to work through a moparts member because I trust all of your judjement and real-life experience. Thanks again!!!

Thank you! I've been working with another guy, but they are really draging their feet.
So I found a california company that will possibly use the same linkbars/bodies that we use for solid rollers to make these hyd. rollers.
We will try some I hope in a month or less. Same basic engine we did for CC, but hyd. roller lifters/cam, and maybe some porting on the RHS heads to see what's there.
I will keep you guys posted.

Can you have them make me a set out of the Small Block Chevy .904 tappet bodies w/link bars?? Please.

IE: R3 48DEG HYD Roller.

Or, better yet, that same lifter body you are talking about with small block chevy link bars and hyd roller internals. YUM!

Yep I can do that. Same thing as we're using for our EM engine this year but ours will be limited travel...would you like limited travel Ron?

Well, Brian, I would like my valvetrain quiet and long lasting. And, these tappets in my 406 Mopar crate motor are probably production pieces and seem to work very well. I am not looking for that last 10 HP or that last 300 RPM. I want quiet reliability, but with consideration that I have a race cam.
So, probably not because I do not intend to zero lash them or lightly preload them. I want enough preload to account for any wear. So at least 1/2 turn, maybe one turn.

The tappets we are supposed to be getting for this motor are supposed to be here any day now, but as usual there is promise after promise being broken probably just to keep us on the hook. They were supposedly being assymbled on Tuesday June 8th and then red labled to me. Sure seems like a long time to put 16 tappets together.

Right now, I will use whatever I can get. This is beyond pathetic.

That is why I'm going in a different direction. Glenn is a good guy, but they've been promising me lifters for months now. I need them yesterday for our project.
I'm hoping this new deal goes quickly and the end product is what we want. I'll probably order 20 sets of them once I've tested them.
Ron, I can get you a set within a couple of weeks but I can't test them before that. You may want to wait I don't know.
These will drop right in like our solid rollers do, as well as oil the bearings and pushrod oil. I'll be using a set in a RHS headed build as soon as I get them but the engine will take a couple of weeks to get on the dyno from where I'm at right now.
I don't like to sell stuff unless I've ran it and checked it out after it's run.
I won't stock any of the 48° stuff, it'll be custom order only.
