I love old paint jobs.My father-in-law used to lay down some really crazy paint jobs back in the 70's.We were kickin around a few ideas for my car like an old letter job wet sanded around the edges to look like an old racer. My grandfather had a shop back in the early sixties called "Shades Garage" I was thinking of lettering the doors or quarters with that logo and making it look old.

Re: old school crazy paint jobs - 12/22/07 05:32 PM

I can put some of the close ups of mine to give you some ideas.

Mine is inspired by several different early 70s funny car. The name is from Pete's Lil' Demon (my fav), the flames over the top are inspired by the Mongoose 2 car, the panel is attribuateble to several pro-stocks and funny's - but it was stopped short going forward more in the funny car style, the gold pearl in the panel is inspired by Jim Dunn's 1973 car, while the stripes are inspired from Schumacher's Stardust car.

The flames start off as a blend of B5 and then go into candy blue and are edge in cream (everything on the car that looks white is actually cream as white is way too harsh against the orange). The panel is B5/candy blue blend and is feathered every 4 incvhes or so so that it catches light in different ways. The panels are airbrushe yellow that fades into a gold pearl with the cream striping - it really pops in sun light and I haven't seen under strip lights yet. The logo is self explanatory. My window lettering is gold outlined in body matching orange.

Richard McPeak, painted my car, took my ideas and promptly did not stick to them. If he had, I would have had a car that would have looked like someone elses. Instead, he listened to what I liked, had the pictures of the cars I liked, and then created something that captured them in a way that is unique to me.

You can see in the first two pics, how the blue around the panel changes based on the sun.

My paint has every single technique from the 70s: candy, pearl, pinstripe, airbrush, character, logo, feathering, and flame.

Re: old school crazy paint jobs - 12/22/07 05:52 PM

bill your car is an insiration..no doubt about it.
i can apprieciate every thing thats done to it.
looks amazing...
wouldnt change a thing.
When i was younger and growing up in new jersey
my dad had alot of ol school race friends..
my Uncle John Fox,Steve Kanuika,Jim lieberman,Bud Corletto, casual casual dealings with jack Wersrt ect.
Ive always listend to the stories. which created the passion.
Later i worked for "Bruce the Brush" as a shop hand..and watched the master..
he got out of the race/car paint in the early 80's and pretty much is a "Letter man" now.
(it pays the bills)
Ive painted alot of motor cycles (they dont need much space) Road race bikes and custom harleys and the like.
Ive done prolly more helmets than i car to remember...
I dont do this for a living..(iam a carpenter) but i dig painting.
I really want to do the duster the way i always imagined..just never came up with a full or total sceme. When i do . rest assured it will be done.
seems i always find something i like better...and it adds to the procrastination.
the duster had some clearcoat pealing.(not my work) and a few yrs ago i started to repair it to make it more acceptable.i goofed off on the roof after removing the 1/2 vynl top.
then i tried some stuff on the decklid with colors i had lying around..
I am thinking to do something this yr.to the sides..a panel and some gold leaf..?
if i can image a complete picture in my head it would have been a done deal by now....
i am geting an "itch"...so i figured i shoudl start widdling down some ideas...thats where this post and a few others got me "scratchin"
the deck lid is neat..but not really it for me.
the roof...again was a wild hair..ive done before on something else....it doesnt stand out enough for me...but its still neat.
ill prolly leave it for now?
the panel on the side is next...and should be that big a deal ...considering its size..
i may spray some test panel on scrap aluminum to see the colors i want to use...?then go from there.
cheaspt.

i grew up doing these type of things,at the time it was consisered very inovative,if you look at all the new technques and trick paints and some of the super fantastic artist of today as good as it all is this old school stuff will hold its own with any of it.

Hey Cheap, where did you get all them freakin circles?

funny/stange story.
i have a 22" roll of vynl tranfer paper..its used to lay over vynl and tranfer the lettering in the as cut layout..
My wife has this cutting kit for putting photo albums together..
i robbed the cutting kit..it has some roller wheels that cut paper, pictures and the like.
in the kit is a circle cutting tool..with multiple diameter "fences"
i laid/applied the transfer paper over a piece of glass. the used the template to cut the circles.
its a little hand held device with a razor wheel and you just run it inside of the fence and it cuts a perfect circle.
it took me a 6 pack and a full nascar race to cut all of them out...over 200# if i recal...
later i found some CD protective stick on paper thingies...but it has the smaller hole in the center sort of like a donut...
i may try them..the effect might be different with the exposed 1" hole in the center...
as long as the adheasive doesnt conflict with the reducers in the paint?
i layed them on like scales front to back.
then i shot a 2"spray from my small gun and ran it around the exposed edge of the template.
then pulled one circle off and painted the adjacent circle ..then pulled it off...and shot the next one..and on and on working my way back to the front..
ive done it on a helmet with smaller circles..and used green, gold and blues..3 guns filled with paint ready to go...
on a helmet it looks killer.
but just about any template can be used to get different effects..
the ol pinstripe tape and pray line looks the part aswell.
i usually use shimmerin (house of colors) but have been buying a lot of water base "Auto air" paints. fast drying no harsh reduecers and it can be wiped off with a wet towel if need to remove it quickly.
they have Killer colors..and you spray it right out of the bottle.no reduction.
easy gun cleanup with water..and no flash term period for the clear.
plus when paneling you dont need quarts of paint..so its much more affordable in smaller quantities..
i am giving up all my secrets...well not really but here is a link..they have some killer photos on this link as well.

ive really been wanting to try the auto air colors but have been a little leary of trying somyhing new.if you dont subscribe to AIRBRUSH ACTION MAG,DOIT ITS A KILLER RAG.
Posted By: cheapstreetdustr

Re: old school crazy paint jobs - 12/23/07 09:20 PM

I have absolutely no reservations recomending the Auto air...paints..
lays just like any other paint youve sprayed..
dip your blade staight in the bottle and lay pinstripes..
or pour it into a gun and shoot it.
you can even get bottle tops that thread onto the bottles..and you can spray your air brush connected/draw directly from the bottle.
no cleaning the hopper..just put the rubber cap on the stem..
shoot some water through the airbrush and move on to the next color.
it has killer coverage if you want it ...with mimimal mill thickness to completely cover..
or dust it on to get an opaque shadow/fade.
i am confident youll like it..
no stinky fumes..and water cleanup.
i will say though cheap homedepot masking tape has a water base adhesive..which if you spray heavy wet coats the glue can blead or leave a residue...on the cut edge.
not really a problem..with good masking tape or blue line vynl tape.
cheapst.
the pearls and flakes are everything you'd hope for.

my Dad or my uncle ..had a story about this car being at Atco during the week way back..
i think they where prepairing for Indy?
doing some flogging-testing..
or it was some sort of race?
my uncle was giving it a look over ..and was asked to step back...
they wouldnt let anyone get too close to the car in the pits or in the lanes..
my dad said they must have been hiding something.
later found out the wing had lead in it..and the back glass was 2x as thick..
and i think they had a neutral drop tranny in it?
(i may be confusing stories?)
but the car was supposed to be set up to take out Grumpy or one of the faster cars?
ive later heard other stories..but they sort of all blend together over time?

and this design would look or fit much better on a barracuda IMHO

Cheap,

I have been looking for those photo's for better than a year now. I knew someone on Moparts had done an A-Body roof up in scales. I remember seeing the pics a long time ago, but could not remember who did them. Do you have any high res, or process type pics you could send me?

I almost posted a request here just last week to find out who did them, and how it was done. But got busy Christmas shopping and never went through with the post.

I am building a 68 Barracuda and wanted to reproduce the scales look. Bucky's car has it in the panels, but I was not sure how he did it. I want to do the entire roof and maybe even the sides. The look on your roof is exactly what I want to do, but in a different color. Probably Shades of Golds and Blues, depending on the way it looks in the sun.

I was going to go for a red paint job originally, but too many red Cuda's out there now days.

Thanks for posting the pics. If you have any other helpful hints, please PM me. I am also considering switching to water based paints for this project and don't even know where to begin.

Re: old school crazy paint jobs - 12/26/07 05:18 PM

this and some larger scallops would be killer on a cuda..
to get the 3d correct do the lighter base color then the darker color fades over the templates..to get the right dimension.
then use a "hole" template to add the ligher fades like blue, purple, gold or silver..to get a real fish scale effect..
its not that hard..just a steady hand and patience
you have to have dry panels when blowing over with the circle "hole" templates. and it doesnt take much paint..just light dustings.
Ive never been to Texas? ?
well san antonio once.

Cheapest,

What color base were you spraying over in these pics? Were you using the water based paints?

-Dave

Re: old school crazy paint jobs - 12/26/07 05:34 PM

no..PPG base clear..
it started out i removed the vynl top because i thought i had rust under it..
i didnt but after removing the top ..i had my paint supply color mix me some paint to finish the top and i was gonna blend it at the b pillars.
but the first application(mix) was much lighter.
so the second color was pretty much spot on..
but since the roof was already shot in the lighter green i went and did the scales with the darker matching body color..i was thinking it might be hard to blend new color to the old on the b pillar.
but with the scales ending..i could camoflauge it.
i ended up sanding and painting most all of the car ..except the hood...(i planned on a glass hood)
i would do a base color-main body color first..
then do the graphics ontop of that..
either of these could be auto air..?
but auto air could also be applied for the graphics over the conventional base paint..
ive never had an issue..except the base color if its solvent base may need to be cleared in a timely/window..
the auto air doesnt have to be..FWIW

Re: old school crazy paint jobs - 12/26/07 05:44 PM

Thanks,

I believe I will go with a black base, and come back with candy gold, then come in with the graphics in green and gold pearls. Gonna order up some candy concentrate to play with it a bit and see how it comes out.

I have had great luck with some of the Alsa Corp Mirror Chrome, and may use some of that under the gold candy. Should give it a gold mirror effect, coupled with the scales. Should be fun to play with at least hehehehe.

If you need anymore pictures of this car let me know. Tom found the origional 70 body (the wide one) and the car MIGHT be ready sometime next year, 1/8 mile blasts most likely on fuel. He did have a new chassis built but sees no need to run full 1/4 mile, esp with the origional body. Dave Reitz built the motor.
