NEW DRAG SLICK BREAK-IN???!!! - 06/09/10 03:25 AM

Just got my "brand new" GoodYear bias-ply slicks today. 1st NEW set I've ever owned! I was wondering what would be the proper technique to break them in? They're a D-3 compound! Thanks for your help guys! RandyB.

Always heard to make the first burnout alittle longer then normal. So give'em a John Force style burnout the first time.

just do one of your normal Randy burnouts,
it brings the resin to the surface (on the first burnout)
then just smoke them to clean and bring the temp up

After 5 runs, swap them side for side, keep track of tire pressure and number of runs before switching sides again, usually 8 - 10 passes after the first switch.

Thats what Hoosier told me.------In a related question; Can you ruin an older set if you do too big of a burnout?

Hey Randy
Did you notice if those Good Years were directional? The last few sets I have purchased didnt have a sticker on them to stagger the tires for installation etc.?

I agree with this Slingshot383

BUT BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN MOUNT THEM - PUT TYPICAL AIR PRESSURE IN AND MEASURE CIRCUMFERENCE.

Not yelling - just making an important point.

If the two slicks are not within 1/2" of each other at inflated diameter, take them back. Leave the stickers on while you do this.

I have seen slicks be as much as an inch different "out of the box".

Don't forget to have them balanced.

Use screws as required on inside and out. Make sure screws are opposite each other inside and out, not staggered. Don't over-tighten screws.

Total crock .Kinda like the myth that if they get too cold they wont hook as well anymore.Im 60 footing almost a tenth faster than last year with mine(low 1.6 last year and low 1.5's now on 8 inch wide M/T's).They spent the winter in the elements in my driveway and a few days it dropped into the single digits and had ice and snow on them lots.They are rubber tires for gosh sakes not wives.Next people will be saying that you should give them a hug and a kiss before you mount them .Just mount them and go racing ...

..... then only one Randy burnout then back
to just heating and cleaning.... about 20* to 25*
above the track surface temp, no dry hops

Unless goodyear slicks have changed in the last couple years they are directional.The slicks serial numbers both point to the right side when installed. For me rotating the goodyears was a no no as my sixty,s would fall off once rotated and never come back even if put back to their original sides. I ran them for over fifteen years but i have ran the other brands to,for me they all worked pretty good. Good luck

Yes Goodyear recommends this mounting procedure......once mine are mounted up correctly I John Force the initial burnout then just haze the from then on.....rotated approx every 10 runs with zero loss in performance (1.13 60')

I also know some guys who rotate with good results also,but it never seemed to work out for me.I always ran the 1984,s(stiff sidewall 14x32).

I ran the 2052's were suggested for SuperGas and worked well on the vette, but it's light

Make sure the direction is correct, pull the stickers off, put one really good heat cycle in them and then go back to your normal routine.

This was the first heat cycle on this set!
