DOMINATOR JETTING ON MY 448" ???

DOMINATOR JETTING ON MY 448" ??? - 06/04/10 03:32 AM

After trying out Mike's(Mr. P-Body)1050 dommy on my .040 over 440 last sunday at the strip,I was wondering where you guys jetted, running a modified 440,and 1050 carb? It is currently jetted at 88 square. Mike had installed 84's,thinking the 88's would be too rich! After checking the plugs, the jetting was too lean,in my opinion! Also...MPH dropped by 2-4 from the 850 holley! Any input would be appreciated! RandyB

On my old 65 with the 11.1.1 440 at the time. with a box stock 8896 Holley 1050. If i remember right Dewayne had me set it up with 92 jets with pv in the front and no pv with 98 jets in the back.I ran 10.56 @ 125 set up that way.that carb does look awesome on your car. Bobby

Start it out at 88s Randy but have jets to jet up
88s were in it standard... we're going out Saturday

Thanks Bobby! Mike,I put the 88's back in earlier this evening, but haven't changed the slicks back to the street tires as of yet! I don't dare drive that car on Belle River Rd. with slicks,I'll end up in a ditch,or one of the many corn fields around here! As far as saturday goes, sounds like a lot of yard work to catch up on,according to the "BOSS"! She's usually right, even though I hate to admit it! Let me(US)know how everything goes with you and Doug at the track! Best of Luck!

Thanks,Ari! How modified is your 440? Any idea how much hp and tq it makes?

Labratt, What fuel are you using in your car? I usually run 92's square jetted in my 8896 dominator on my 408 smallblock. However, i'm running pump gas, which i use more of than race gas, because of the lower octane rating.

Is this carb. a stock Holley? If so what is the list number on it and the dash number if it is a HP Domininator? I have found that starting with the stock jetting and going from there is best when you don't know which way to go on a second hand or borrowed carb. If it is a custom carb. start testing and jet up until it slows downs

Re: DOMINATOR JETTING ON MY 448" ??? - 06/04/10 05:58 AM

Cab,I'll have to get the numbers off of it tomorrow. As far as I know it's a factory,un-modified non-HP model. It belongs to Mr. P-Body! While we're on the carb subject, have you guys ever seen anyone run square jetting, with a PV in the primary???

X2 etc...FWIW I've wound-up with 92's sq. max (in good air) with the old 8896 and somewhat similair combo's.

Re: DOMINATOR JETTING ON MY 448" ??? - 06/04/10 11:28 AM

I just looked at the first pic in this post...If that's the carb it is a 'new' model Dominator. As has been said I'd reference the designed/engineered fuel metering and move from there.

Re: DOMINATOR JETTING ON MY 448" ??? - 06/04/10 02:18 PM

Thanks Sean! That's all I know is Mike said it came with 88 jets, out of the box. So...I'll start from there next time out to the track, probably in 2 weeks. Almost certain the Gratiot Cruise is next Saturday! QUESTION!...ended up with 82squared on the jetting with a pri. PV,on the 850 when it was on Jake's dyno a few weeks ago. Has anyone ever seen or heard of squared jetting with a PV??? Engine responds well, makes good power, but I've NEVER seen squared jetting using a power valve! BTW... A/F ratio was 13:2 with this combo. When I brought it in,I had the jetting set at 82/90 with a 4.5" pri. PV,and the A/F was 12:9. Temps were 83-85* and humidity was 41-43%! What do you guys think? RandyB

I ran 88's front and 92's rear, no power valve in bad air here in Las Vegas. I had a 446 11:1 and the 8896 carb.

Just got the # off the dominator. It's a 8896 w/4-corner idle! BTW...what # dominator is generally considered to be the best for street/strip??? THANKS!

Sounds like you might need to work on hooking that puppy up,,,was blowing the tires off big time once you nailed it.
Clamp the front section of the leaf springs ?? hmmmm

PS,,,i found another labrat guy,,,and put some "thoughts" with him,,,lol

Re: DOMINATOR JETTING ON MY 448" ??? - 06/05/10 01:52 AM

Thanks for another LabRat,at least it's not a LabBat,like the last one!! Good news! Just got a good deal on some brand new Goodyear bias-ply 29"x9" D-3 slicks! Should be getting them early next week. Brian Harlow got me a good price on the tires, and the shipping! Should make a difference coming off the line! Doug is right, when I hit it off the line with the Dominator on,it just blew the tires off! Spun for the first 40-60 ft.! BIG increase in low-end torque, and under lean conditions!

Still waiting for an answer on my square-jetted using a power valve question! ANYONE EVER SEE OR HEAR OF THIS BEING DONE??? Thanks! RandyB

As your intuition is telling you...it is unusual. I've never seen it without something else being wrong. You can most likely rule-out a weaker 'signal' in the front half of the engine. Is the P/V sized correctly? Is it ruptured? If you want additional advise/views start a new post topic. I can only speak for myself but, I'll only read thru a post once even if I reply I rarely look for a reply to my reply...Because I don't reply often, LOL. I'm not sure but, it almost seemed like you were trying to use a similair # jet in a different carb? If that's the case then don't IMO. For me, at the track sometimes you just give it what it wants and ask Q's later. Hoodscoops can cause jetting issues that won't show up on a chassis dyno. Hopefully within the next 2 weeks Dartin' will be running and we'll all hang-out at the track to tune.

Thanks,Sean! The PV I'm running is a 4.5. My vacuum is 6" at idle,in gear. RandyB

I would say that`s not common and after chasing my tail for years and wearing out jet threads, the chassis dyno is the way to go+ have you messed w/bleeds yet. Have you opened the carb up to see if anything`s funky inside?

Tells me that the PV circuit is too small so you need
the added jet size to cover it up.... the carb has
been opened many times but I never measured the PV
holes... the carb was set on the dyno to the numbers
it has now
EDIT
I actually said it backwards the PV circuit is too
big... it might have a high flow PV and it could
use a standard... being that carb is old

Re: DOMINATOR JETTING ON MY 448" ??? - 06/05/10 06:25 PM

Toss the PV & square jet accordingly , only the motor can tell you what size jetting for that carb , it all depends on how the motor is set up , going up in jet sometimes won't net any gains due to air speed having already been maxed out , messing with HSB/emulsion circuit can net some gains , i've always wondered why holley ships these carbs 88 square jet with two power valves , they could @ least supply jet extensions to the rear , but they don't.

I think some of you mis-read which carb has the power valve! NOT THE DOMINATOR! The 850 that the car was dynoed with. I think I might just square-jet the 850 also. Maybe start out with 86 squared, and go from there! Thanks guys! RandyB

Randy... why mess with it... it was on the dyno and
it works on your car... if its not broke dont fix it

Re: DOMINATOR JETTING ON MY 448" ??? - 06/06/10 12:20 AM

On my last car, the DartSport, it had a #9375 carb and liked 98 jets , no power valves.

On this 69 Dart I have an old 9375 that was rebuilt by BIGS and it likes 86 jets squared, no power valves. You'll just have to do some testing.

Thanks guys! Hopefully I'll be back at it next sunday. New slicks should be in this week! Anybody using GoodYear D-3 compound? That's what these will be! Got a good deal on them from Harlow Tire, here in metro Detroit!
