To add a little sound to the pics go to Hemi Fred's website: Hemi Fred. My buddy and I convinced Roy Hill to duct tape a tape recorder inside his colt at Capitol Raceway in the late 70's/early 80's (can't remember exact date). Love that Southern accent. Enjoy.

I knew it was confirmed as being one of Ronnie's car, but I wasn't aware that the chasis was totally redone on the Colt.... I guess stuff like that happens as the cars go from racers to racers, and the NHRA changes saftey standards. Too bad someone didn't document how all the changes made.

Stewart, did you change the rear spoiler from the two split spoilers to the one long one? That other Colt you sent out the other day had the two small spoilers. Was it an S&M Colt too? Didn't Logghe build those, or was that another Colt? I like the first Colts better than the later ones.

My Colt (Sox&Martin Logghe Car) was originally built with a 4 speed - but very quickly went to a Lenco (picture9)- as for the spoiler, it was always a long across trunk type

Another one a friend of mine in Ohio owned in the 80's. Originally a Hemi/Lenco but had a Max Wedge/727 when this pic was taken, about 1987. I think it was one of the Rod Shop cars?

I was Riffles Colt, then Paul Marcum owned it then Rod Gartin. After Rod sold it I'm not sure where it went. I have a picture of the car when Rod owned it on my wall.

Are we talking about 2 different Rod Shop Colts ?

One of them was a sb car, and the other, I believe was a Hemi -- What I see as different is the hood scoops - one car seems to have the double layer scoop of as in the Roger Denny car, and the other a standard scoop

Stewart,

The one that 300by500 is talking about is the one Rod Gartin use to own. The picture is identical except the picture I have doesn't have the Dodge decal on the door. But the hood scoop decals and the black stripe is exactly the same, along with the maroon headlights. According to Rod that car was Riffels car. He and Paul Marcum (who bought the car off the Rod Shop) both live in the Columbus area.

Jim, no comments from Texas please :-)

The Black Colt in Virgina, would have been a Missile car. It is referred to. as the D5 Colt. It is the real deal, as the guys in that picture can attest to - In case you do not reconize them, that is Tom Hoover and Dick Oldfield.

Yep. It was taken at Marion County back in the 1980's.

If I remember correctly, it was taken on the day when Jeg Coughlin Jr. was racing their pit-bike in the motorcycle class. He dialed it in at 25 seconds flat, and he would get to the finish line in time to stop at the lights, pick up the front wheel of the pit bike, and drop in into the lights at just the right time to win. The next week they had a new rule where there was a minimum E.T. for the motorcycle class! LOL!

Sucks that the "Mounts Mopar" is just sitting around...

Rod owned it only briefly from what I remember. The last I heard it's still in Columbus but a chevy guy owns it. I tried to get it off him 3 years ago but gave up. I passed the information on to Reed but he didn't have any luck either from what he told me.

Leroy Roder outa Wisc. - Stewart's Colt went thru a number of people before I finally traced it down - it's in VA. now getting some work done to it and chassis is getting certified - I plan on making some short "squirts" with it when I get it done - here's a shot of the chassis right after we took the body off - Dave Christie & Stewart are helping with the restoration - MANY THANKS to both of 'em ! -- Reed in Neb.

Re: Hemi Colts again - 06/24/10 01:36 AM

Thanks Bill, I've had the car for about 2 1/2 yrs now. Just this last year were we able to start on it. I traced it thru EVERY owner and finally found it up in them mountains of WV. Very people up to now even knew I had it. Very proud to have saved another piece of our racing heritage and even happier to have Dave Christie and Stewart P.'s help. Thru various friends, etc - have found some of the original parts off the car including -Lakewood/lenco bellhousing, Lenco shifter assy. (and possibly one of the Lenco's), complete Magnesium Dana, Dual-plug valve covers and inline twin-plug Dual-dist. and other misc. parts that diappeared off it over it's lifetime. It's a slow and costly project but well worth it. I believe it's the only known surviving Logghe-chassis'ed Colt left.
Many Thanks,
Reed in Neb.

Re: Hemi Colts again - 12/01/11 04:42 AM

Hey, I can answer that! The Rod Shop Colt was used in 1974, with Jim Thompson driving, to test the prototype W2 heads. This program was parallel to Don Carlton's testing in the "yellow" car. The Colt ran a best of 9.12, as I recall, at about 100 lbs under the NHRA Pro Stock weight. There was alot more potential in the heads, but they were breaking blocks as the HP went up. The results of the Carlton and Rod Shop testing is what got Chrysler (slowly) started on developing the 340 race block which finally showed up about the time Glidden moved over to Mopar and ran the successful Arrow.

As for Desantis and Crider, they were trying to make a go of it with T/A type heads. As I recall, they only ran the car for a partial year, breaking alot of parts and finally selling the car to Roy Hill who put a Hemi in and did real well in IHRA Pro Stock in 1976 with it. He also ran his Duster in NHRA Pro Stock that same year.

Hope that helps!

Mark

Re: Hemi Colts again - 12/01/11 05:02 AM

The red Rod Shop Colt was only a small block in 1974 and *maybe* early 1975 until the W2 small block testing was stopped 'til a better engine block could be made (took 3+ years!). Then, it was converted to a Hemi with Gene Dunlop (and occasionally Riffle) driving as a B/A. When Dunlop damaged it in 1976, the Rod Shop bought the black Colt from Roger Denney to meet their match race obligations and Riffle turned in his Dart Sport to drive this Colt. The red Colt was also repaired and for a short time the Rod Shop was running 2 in-house program Colts (Riffle/black and Dunlop/red) and a third in Carlton's outside (gold car) program.

Hope that helps.

BTW, I sold the Colt back to the Rod Shop that your friend later bought and raced. Like David Sox said earlier, the Hardy-build Colts were very nice handling.

I thought Hill had a Plymouth Arrow? I don't remember any Colt he had. I sort of remember an article in HR or Carmaro Craft about some W2 prototype heads that were welded up. Probably Mullins developed but I don't remember much about the article.
