8.50 to 7.50 chassis certification question - 05/27/10 12:51 AM

My car has factory floor, firewall and 10 point cage that is good to 8.50. Im already planning on going faster and need to explore what is going to take to cert to 7.50. Which is the easiest? 25.2 25.3 25.5

I am just tossing it around.....

Re: 8.50 to 7.50 chassis certification question - 05/27/10 02:37 AM

25.4 You will have to have rocker sill bar, dash bar, forward crossmember, seat bar, doors x-ed, funny car cage, and x-in the driveshart tunnel. I think that's all. Because of the stock floor you do not have to have the diagonals under the seat.

Is your current cage moly or mild steel?

The easiest is 25.5 good to 7.50 can be chrome moly or mild steel. The other certs are 6.50@3600# for 25.3 and 6.00 @3200lbs for 25.2 and both only moly. If you're trying to do it youself go to sfi.com and buy the spec.

Just got my 25.5 tag for my duster, it had a 8.50 cage but i decided to cut it out and start from scratch. A little more work in the beginning but it allowed me to fit it tighter in the car knowing i could drop it down later to weld it.

Minor trimming to the floor boards and a pic of the under car bars.

Mine is chrome moly. I have a dash bar, I have bars going out to the front frame rails (is that forward crossmember?) Im confused on x in the drive shaft tunnel?

Im confused on x in the drive shaft tunnel?

In this pic of mine you can see the X in the tunnel
area... this is to keep the frame from RACKING back
and forth(the 2 rails paralleling on each other)

The front trans. crossmember CAN serve as your fwd. crossmember(series 6a-c)if the cage is built accordingly.
The 'X' in the tunnel would go between your dimensionally legal subframe connectors possibly holding a driveshaft loop as well.

with a stock firewall and floor you do not need any x bars under the car. You do need a bar from the frame connector to the sill bar behind the seat.
Only the bars in the divers compartment are part of the cert. the bars going from your dash bar out under the hood do not matter.

if you have a 1 5/8ths cage now you can add the funny ca cage, roof bar and gussets pretty easy. If you are going to do this yourself you should get the sfi book as it lists all of the different sizes you can use.

Re: 8.50 to 7.50 chassis certification question - 05/28/10 03:04 AM

I was thinking about joining the fray again, but I do like seeing the opinions. Ok I saw a comment saying "no bars under the car are in the spec or checkable." If you look at the spec you need a 6A,6B,6C bars. They can be built inside the car however sometimes causes problems for your foot placement for throttle. The comment "The front trans. crossmember CAN serve as your fwd. crossmember(series 6a-c)if the cage is built accordingly." Is true if it's a 68-70 cuda or dart and if the rockers bars are welded to it. I've got a question into Head tech. person about other a-bodies, b-bodies, and e- bodies because us mopar guys no there's no difference. We'll see the answer to that question. They did that because of the SS/HA cars going to fast now. That last line is my opinion. Is that good Rick?

Re: 8.50 to 7.50 chassis certification question - 05/28/10 08:42 PM

WOW Ted, that's great. My head is still spinning from reading that, with all the 6a, 6b, and 6c stuff and no SFI spec in front of me to read! But then again, maybe it's the German beer I had at dinner tonight in Zwickua, Germany! However, I did get to see a rally road race in the town here. The pits are outside the front door of my hotel too...plenty of car action for a change!

Is your car back in your garage yet? Have you given BG any more thoughts? I think I am bringing the cuda for the cruise to the Corvette factory. I have to be there Wed night for a manditory meeting. Let me know.
