Working on my finish line technique

Working on my finish line technique - 05/19/10 01:25 AM

I have been playing with my GoPro camera to help me tighten up my finish line margin. In this video, the Road Runner red lighted with a -.014 and I had a .009RT. I ran an 11.461 on an 11.45 dial and the big RR ran a few off on an 10.45 dial. Who got the stripe even though it didn't matter and by how much. In round two I had a .0084 margin of victory and round three I had a .0091 margin of victory. I got the red eye in round four.

Thats a interesting idea.. I need to do something to drive the stripe better That for sure..Both races I lost last weekend I should of won.. I took too much stripe..

Re: Working on my finish line technique - 05/19/10 01:55 AM

looks like you took the stripe by a mile. imo the top end is the hardest thing about bracket racing. the last 2 races I went to I lost at the stripe by lifting and letting the other car come back around in days past those would have been automatic wins. nothing will solve the top end but more seat time. the last one I lost was by .001

Put a stripe taker on the windshield... line your car
and another at the starting line(both in final stage)
and with you in your normal seating position the tape
(stripe taker) should be in line with the front of his
car...if the other car is behind that tape you should
have the win... not counting break outs...sure some
cars have a longer front end and if you want set the
tape a bit farther out... or just remember what you
are racing

I know how you feel this last weekend I past him and backed out of it so I wouldn't take too much stripe and he came back on me loss by .001 he had .000 light and I had .004 his dial 9.02 ran 9.04 mine 8.88 ran 8.897.
Should we every lift????

yes, but you have to trust the car sometimes. I don't know mine well enough to trust it yet. but it wont take but a few losses to learn

Problem when the car is 15 mph faster than you he goes by to fast ever look at something like that..Trust me I know LOL

Here is the et slip from the last race I lost..I thought I took him across by a fender..and I went and talk to him ..he said the same thing..Tell me what you think ?

me him
dail 11.25 10.02
RT .011 .022
60ft 1.568 1.433
330 4.562 4.116
1/8 7.108 6.389
mph 96.19 107.77
1000ft 9.318 8.363
et 11.200 10.037
mph 119.45 134.47

left first mov.0827

right mov .0717

Be honest I not sure how to do the math on this to tell me How far ahead I was...looks like more than a fender ??

Vern:

There was a three part series recently in the National Dragster on bracket racing math. It was spread out over several months, so I had to go back and find all of the issues. It is by Luke Bogacki and the column is called The Driving Force.

There is also information on ThisIsBracketRacing.com

Re: Working on my finish line technique - 05/20/10 02:18 AM

So I took him across by 3/4 of a car length.. Not good.. I got to get better at jugging this..I padded the gas once..but was too late I only knock off 1/2 of a MPH off..15mph faster seems like alot more on the track than it sounds like..I know I need seat time..only made 15 runs last year in the car. I watch and work harder at it..

yep my math came up with 14 even. with a 15 mph difference he should have been at your back bumper at the mph stripe to be able to take the stripe

if you had of run dead on your dial you would have still beat him there by 4 foot

Yea car pick up 3 in the 60 ft and 4 in the 1/8 mile from the past before ??? track got real good ??

Re: Working on my finish line technique - 05/20/10 02:28 AM

Definitely a bit to much strip there Vern. Things can happen fast at the stripe for sure especially with big MPH differences. As someone said sometimes you have to trust the car, but then again no need to take to much stripe either even when you trust the car.

Re: Working on my finish line technique - 05/20/10 02:32 AM

Basically,
You use the amount of time between the cars finish line times, X the MPH of the second car, X 1.47, which changes mph to fps.

Having an opponents incrementals is absolute gold!! Knowing 1000'-1320' split times helps you understand the closing rates. What the drivers sees in that emotionally charged moment, as his adrenaline is spiked...and what the numbers spell out are often 2 different stories!! And the numbers don't lie!!!

Re: Working on my finish line technique - 05/20/10 05:48 AM

Jamie you weren't the only car picking up 4 on random passes. I think I was 10.43 on a 10.48 5th round?? My opponet was about the same 10.41 on a 10.45 that round. I knew he was ahead and I wish I would have just cut him loose at the end but its just so tough for me to lift in that situation.

I don't know if it was the wind, the starting line, poor staging or what but my car was all over the place too.

I'm ready to try Mt Vernon next week where I can usually etch 6.63 on the window for the weekend.

My car was all over the place too. B/o by .05 in the 2nd pedalling it.

Re: Working on my finish line technique - 05/21/10 03:56 AM

I was on the other end of that deal. I lost .05 by the 1000 ft mark 4th round. Lawson went down right in front of me and lost .04

Re: Working on my finish line technique - 05/22/10 06:56 AM

It's interesting that the math doesn't match the time slip.

Left: +.011 rt -.050 b/o = -.039 from perfect
Right: +.022 rt +.017 over = +.039 from perfect

Left First = -.039 -.039 =.078 NOT .0827 shown

Thanks for all the interesting information and ideas. Tomorrow I will most likely go to Beaver Springs and I will give some of the advise listed here at try at the track.

BTW, on the run in the video I won by .0298 seconds or about 5'4". Round two I tighted up to about 1'4" and round three 1'6". Fun, fun, fun!
