NEW BEST-CC event Columbus

NEW BEST-CC event Columbus - 05/16/10 10:45 PM

I am sure there will be several "new bests",,,thought i would post mine.

I blew the motor up LAST YEAR at Bowling Green ,,,,and had it re-done over the winter,,nothing fancy,,,re-used my E heads,,,,and changed the cam.

Previous motor was awesome,,(440, solid cam, E heads, 13:1) ,ran well,,,low maintenance,,,and i had tons of runs on it,,,,no complaints,,,

Porter Racing did the new motor, short block,,,451, solid cam, 13:1 E heads,,,made 650 HP and 580 tq on Dwaynes dyno..........

Best ET LAST year was 10.26 @129 @ Norwalk with a DA of 600,,,so i was hoping to get close to that with the new motor.

Just got the "new" motor installed this week,,,and fired it up 2 days before leaving home............

Got to the track Friday,,,for the first run ,,,, Car went 10.21 off the trailer,,,, woo hoo...NEW BEST ,,, first run,,,,MPH was about 130....

Second run,,,,10.23 with a drop in 60',,, very happy,,,,

Saturday AM,,,,nice and cool,,,,,,did some minor adjustments....expecting some more 10.20's.......

First run............ 10.12 @ 131.3 !!!!
Second run 10.14 @ 131 YIKES,,,,,,,,, didnt see that coming....

This was with a 1.44 60',,,, ( best 60' in the past was a 1.40)........ so.......there might be a little more.

Was with Mr P body and Labratt,,,, got some suggestions on the suspension,,,that might help....(Thanks Mike and Randy)

Also noticed my slicks are SHOT......... no wear hole to be seen,,,,,,

so,,,,new set of slicks,,,and some front end "tweeking",,,might help even more....we'll see....

Very happy with the results,,,,was hoping the new motor would run a 10.26 or close,,,,,,but thrilled to get a 10.12 @ 131MPH

I put all the motor specs,,,,,(FYI),,,if anyone is interested,,,,nothing to hide,,,,

Re: NEW BEST-CC event Columbus - 05/16/10 11:57 PM

Congrats Doug! Can't wait to see it run.

That is too funny that your car is 3260 because that's what mine weighed exactly a few weeks ago on the scales. I am hoping to get it lightened up a bit with some wheels/brakes in the near future.

Re: NEW BEST-CC event Columbus - 05/17/10 04:18 AM

Dougie,I really think if you can get some .840" race bars, running the Calvert shocks, and puttin' on a new set of slicks, you'll be seeing some 1.35 60' times and most likely high 9's! Your new motor ran great! Kudo's to Dwayne! As always,it was great hangin' with you(and Raff)this week end! We had a GREAT time! Now if I can just curtail that snoring of his!!!... I'll get in touch with Gary Jacob and see if he can dig up a set of those bars for ya! Talk soon,Buddy! RandyB BTW...the part # on those bars is P5249156.

Re: NEW BEST-CC event Columbus - 05/17/10 04:34 PM

Great job Doug, congrats!!

BTW thanks for posting up the specs....
I was going to put a post up about stock stroke Ohio cranks (I need one for a project), but I guess I won't bother now....if that works for your application it's going to work just fine for mine too.

Re: NEW BEST-CC event Columbus - 05/17/10 08:40 PM

Congrats.
What rpm do you cross the finish line at. I've just bought some 31" slicks to keep the rpm down.
My motor is similar spec to yours.

Re: NEW BEST-CC event Columbus - 05/17/10 09:01 PM

Thanks everyone.
I wasnt sure what to expect. I didnt get a chance to do anything to the car before I left Louisville to head to Columbus,,,other than setting the timing,,and checking for any leaks.

I am going to replace the slicks,,,they are shot,,,(3 years old this spring),,,so, we'll see if that helps,,,i think it might with the 60'

The other plan is to put in some lighter torsion bars, have to measure the current ones,,,but think they are the "stock" bars,,hopefully i can get the car to transfer better....

My 60' were 1.44,,,,so,,if i could get that down to a 1.40 i would be pleased,,,,doubt i'll hit a 9' but i'll try and keep chipping away at it.

Thanks for all the comments,,,,

DOUG

Re: NEW BEST-CC event Columbus - 05/18/10 12:21 AM

Congrats Doug,

Sounds like the new bullet you loaded in
the gun is going to do the job, with some tweaking I don't see high 9's being a problem with
your set up.

Keep after it small changes, sometimes brings
the most gains, just keep up with what you do, so you know what happens, and if it doesn't work you can go back and try something else.

Definately need to work on the 60's, there are gains to be made in that area, my car will go 1.40 flat in the 60, when the track is gooood, just so so, it will go 1.42's regularly, and my engine is no where near the engine you have, that would be where I would start looking for gains.

By the way, mine has the stock torsion bars, and those old junk comp engineering front shocks, so don't over think the front end.

Re: NEW BEST-CC event Columbus - 05/19/10 01:43 AM

Thanks Dave,,,,
1.40's would be great,,,,,i'll keep working at it,,,,

New slicks on the way soon,,,,and just some minor stuff to play with on the front end.......
When i bought the car,,,it was running 10.60's,,so....im getting to my goal slowly,,,with the low 10's

Re: NEW BEST-CC event Columbus - 05/20/10 07:51 PM

How essential is it to use or buy a "torsion bar removal tool" ?

Will a BFH do the same thing ?

what do you guys normally do,,,,,,,,,,,

I found some lighter torsion bars,,,going to give them a try,,,,,with some new slicks,,,,,and some Calvert shocks,,,,

(ps,,i know Dave,,,not trying to over think it,,,but I have to keep messing with stuff,,,lol)

its very crucial. get the miller tool. dont use vise grips and bang away. you'll ruin the torsion bar.
use the correct tool.

Re: NEW BEST-CC event Columbus - 05/21/10 01:29 AM

Congrats Doug on the new best Now all you have to do is put an Indy crossram on there and go 10.0's or better and join the MW class. By the way I took my torsion bars out without a special tool and put them back in with no problems.

Cheap simple t-bar removal tool: take two pieces of 1/4"X2" alumimium strap bar, drill two holes and bolt over the t-bar,hit the aluminium with a hammer and drive out the bar.Cheap and no damage to the bar.
