Electric fuel pump location A-body - UPDATED - 05/11/10 05:19 PM

When adding my aeromotive pump they told me that it had to be lower than the fuel tank and the only place that I could basically mount mine was to put it on the inside of the passenger side frame rail right behind the rear seat basically. The main question is how close can this be to a heat source as the pump lines are approximately 4" away from the muffler on that side. Also I just installed a sump and there's probably 4 ft of -10 to the pump. Any problem with that?

Why not on the rear frame rail behind the tire?

There was no room due to the tailpipes. I guess I could move it to the outside of the rail but then the lines would still have to cross the tailpipes at some point.

Yeah, it's about 4 ft. of line before the pump at this point. will look at moving it tonight..

Re: Electric fuel pump location - 05/11/10 05:57 PM

The only thing I might consider is that you don't ask the pump to perform two functions.
It will have to draw from the tank , and push fuel forward.
It most likely will do both , but I have always had my pump behind the tank to take advantage of both gravity and surge on launch , so the pump only has to propel the fuel forward from there.
Like I said , it will probably work , but it isn't the ideal set up.

Can anybody post pics of their pump mounted with a stock tank and sump? Thx!

Mine is an Aeromotive 11203.

Re: Electric fuel pump location - 05/11/10 06:07 PM

Standby This pump is a Magnafuel 300 mounted in the inside corner of the passenger side frame rail and rear bumper panel, it does not go through the trunk floor. The sump is stainless steel with a 12 AN steel fitting welded into the bottom of it and a 5/8 (#12 AN size) aluminum line to the pump using #12 AN fittings I did have the exhaust system on the car, the Muffs are mounted on the ouside of the frame rails between the fenders and the frame, the exhaust pipes run under the rear end housing, no room for them over the rear end housing because of the coil overs I ran the 1/2 inch aluminum fuel line on the inside of the rear frame rail and then to the front of the car through the trans crossmember and then on the inside of the front frame rails, don't forget to protect it as required by NHRA rules. As already said, mount the pump as far back as possible Almost all of the good electric pumps for carbs. push a lot better than they suck IHTH EDIT, no picture Hopefully fixed now

My pump is set up in relation to my fuel cell like your alternative #2 ( directly across from tank output) and it seems to work fine.

Re: Electric fuel pump location - 05/11/10 11:57 PM

I run a fuel cell on a rack built to keep it up off the trunk floor. The BG pump is mounted below the tank in the trunk . #12 AN from the tank to the filter/pump , then #10AN to the reg.

Here is mine with a stock tank.
I haven't run the lines forward yet , but am leaning towards outside the frame rail and through the trans cross member.
kind of a work in progress deal.

I don't know why it didn't attach.
Let's try again.

Re: Electric fuel pump location - 05/12/10 01:01 AM

Awesome guys! I ended up using the alternative #1 which was basically I believe what Cab had posted. The only thing now is the fitting between the pump and the filter I am not sure about. I just put an o-ring on the -10AN male fitting out of the pump and screwed the filter on. Pretty sure it's likely to leak and may have to find a female/female coupler or something and put the other fitting back into the filter. Thanks for all the help!

Re: Electric fuel pump location - 05/12/10 01:27 AM

I just mount a holley blue pump on my barracuda. I made a bracket that hangs dwon from the shock studs. I made it out of 3/4" square tube the pump is even with the bottom of the tank ans sits in front of the tank right to the drivers side of the center section of the rearend hosing

Re: Electric fuel pump location - 06/28/10 05:16 PM

So at my wits end now. This setup is not working either. Pump appears to cavitate or vapor lock etc. After everything warms up my fuel pressure will go whacko and bounce around a little then it'll go to about 2-3 psi and then finally putz out. I moved the front fuel filter from the connection at the factory up to the regulator directly off the carb thinking maybe the headers may have gotten the fuel boiling. This made no difference either. The only other thing that makes me wonder is that this fuel tank originally was ecs and I changed it over to non-ecs and it only has the small 1/4" or whatever air vent off the fill tube. I also put a vented locking gas cap as I didn't have the correct non-ecs cap. So it should have enough vent but maybe not? I'll post some pictures of basically the whole setup in a minute. Any ideas what else could cause this?
Maybe having the reg by the intake etc is causing it as well? See below pics and see if anything stands out that could be a problem.

Re: Electric fuel pump location - 06/28/10 09:19 PM

you have an identical installatio as mine other than the 3/8" hard line - I have some 1/2"- and mine works great. don't know what else to tell ya.

Re: Electric fuel pump location - 06/28/10 10:15 PM

Liquid filled gauge? I just had a brand new Liquid filled gauge that would do that. Thought I still had supply issue until I watched it run for 20 mins at zero fuel pressure. Changed to regular gauge and I have rock steady 8 lbs. I think the heat makes the liquid expand and screws up the gauge.

Re: Electric fuel pump location - 06/28/10 10:28 PM

it does it with the guage in the pictures and also a non liquid filled sport comp. It eventually does completely run out of fuel once it does this. I have already had the mfg rebuild the pump once being only a few months old as it did this before hence me completely changing the setup. I will eliminate the hardline and go with -8 to the front as well. I have also checked voltage to the pump and that isn't an issue either. Something is keeping it from getting fuel or it has to be cavitating or vapor lock somewhere I guess.

I know w/my holley billet 150 pump that I enlarget the breather in my cell and it definately helped. I`ve read that the bigger pumps want at least a #8 for the vent and you`re runnin a modified stock gas tank..............

I had thought about that too and have even driven around without a gas cap on it and the same issue exists. That was my first thought when this all started happening was that I was creating a vacuum but with the vent and the vented gas cap it must have enough. Strangely enough when it did it one time and lost the prime i covered the open fill tube and it actually primed. Strange..

Re: Electric fuel pump location - 06/28/10 10:59 PM

Smart........that`s how I knew I needed more venting.....running it w/out the gas cap.

Re: Electric fuel pump location - 06/28/10 11:07 PM

That's why I am completely out of ideas. Things left would be to get rid of the hardline completely and just go to a new -8 line and maybe even a aeromotive reg. I have noticed that the pump will drive through the reg sometimes. The other day when first starting up i just ran the pump without the engine running and it went to 13 psi and the reg is at 7 psi. Also thought that the reg that close to the VC and intake may be where the fuel is vapor locking possibly?

Re: Electric fuel pump location - 06/29/10 12:21 AM

Mine`s mostly 1/2 alum line other than a couple of rubber pieces where I sectioned it for ease of installement although I noticed a few bends and turns in on your install. I mounted my reg on the inner pass fender and my feed and return lines run inside the inner fender to help keep the fuel cool. Maybe if you ran a return line it could/would help w/vapor lock if that` even the problem. You did say you had to send the pump back for a repair so who knows there also.

Re: Electric fuel pump location - 06/29/10 05:02 AM

That looks like neopreme hose, if so check for a flapper inside the hose, sometimes the fittings will dig out a piece of the inside of the hose so it acts like a flapper valve blocking the inside of the line. Remove the hose so you can see inside the fittings with a strong, bright light and see if you can see one, also try taking a real thin ice pick or thin knitting needles to push inside the fitting and slide it into the hose on all four sides to see if the needle or probe pushes the flapper out I'm facing a intermittent fuel leak in my system now, I'm thinking it is the nepreme bypass hose from the pump to the tank leaking after it runs a while and gets some warm fuel ran thru it. I hope to find it tomorrow, I'm going to put it on four jackstands and run it for 5 or 6 minutes to see if it will start leaking again
