452 Cast head fluid leak?

452 Cast head fluid leak? - 05/07/10 05:49 PM

I loosened the header bolts on my 452 cast iron heads today and coolant came out! I dont remember this being good nor supposed to occur. Not sure if the exhaust manifold bolts/studs got into the coolant jackets.
Anyone have an opinion here to assist me? Looks like the summer cruising isnt going to happpen. Unless I can find a simple fix.

You're ok! A few are in the water from the factory

Generally the end holes are tapped into the water jackets.

Thanks Hemiroid! I really appreciate the help on that one. Been a while (years!) since I have done this. What would you recommend as for putting on the new bolts for sealant? I have some Permatex-pneumatic/hydraulic sealant that I have used before with no issues but it wasnt heated like this will be on exhaust ports?

Thanks as well B G... That is where I found the coolant, on both ends of the right head.

I just use a little high temp silicone and have never had a problem.

As stated, the outer bolt holes go into water and if you can, I`d put studs in those w/sealant instead of bolts if it doesn`t jack up installing/removing the headers/maniolds.

I hope you used Hi-Temp RTV. I tried PTFE(teflon) once, and the engine warmed up fine the first time, then leaked when I warmed it a second time.....takes a little time, but it melts out.
