Help! Car stalls when I "hit it" in burnout & on 2 step

Help! Car stalls when I "hit it" in burnout & on 2 step - 04/24/10 03:10 PM

The car stalled on the line last night right when I went on the 2 step. Had to be pushed off the line. Also had a little fire in the hoodscoop which was easily put out by just blowing into the scoop. It also seems like it wants to do this when I first hit it in the burnout box. The rest of the night I kinda "leaned into the throttle" gradually to prevent this from happening and that worked but it cost me in the second round(late!!!) doing this on the 2 step .
Should I go larger(carb too lean) on the shooters to cure this or smaller(carb too rich)?
Anyone have this happen to them and found a cure? Shure would appreciate some help!
Thanks Mike

Haveing a similar symptom With the 72 and so far nothing I have done with the squirters has seemed to make a difference.

Both of you should try fattening up your idle screws

and check the pump cams, some have a delay in them. the blue or brown cams may help. after you are sure you have no timing or ignition issues.

had the same issue...changed pump cam and all was good.

Thanks for the reply Mr. P body.
Could you elaborate on how fattening up the idle will affect the "hit"
Thanks Mike

I'll try, when your lean on the idle circuit it will want to die due to a lack of suffeceint fuel to keep the motor running, you can try a very small wire in the idle bleeds, all of them first and see if that fixes it. If it does you can remove the old bleeds and install new smaller ones or use some epoxy to fill them and then drill them smaller. The other thing is to properly adjust the accelerator pump screw on the accelertor pump arm to Holley specs That is with the throttle at wide open throttle you should be able to slide a .015 feeler gauge in easily between the accelerator pump screw and the pump lever attached to the float bowl Most carbs. are not even close to that spec

Is the motor still cold in the bleach box? , fire through the carb is a lean condition , will also happen when too much timing is pulled (misfire in cap)

When mine started doing that it was just old pump diaphragms. They get stiff when they get old and don't retract fully, reducing volume. New ones are much more flexible and totally fixed it. The used Holley 9377 I bought on ebay last winter had such stiff diaphragms that you couldn't even open the throttles fully. Seller said he was using it last summer It's otherwise a virgin carb, I don't think he knew how to work on it so just bought another.

Car was fully warmed up in the box and on the line! Has a brand new MSD Pro billet Dist. with all timing in by about 2000

"When mine started doing that it was just old pump diaphragms"
Carb was brand new last year but did sit off of motor all winter and was dry!
"old bleeds and install new smaller ones "
will check on this also!!!

I agree, seems like the idle mixture has to be rich enough to carry the engine through the sudden throttle opening. The fuel from the squirters doesn't arrive quick enough. Back out the low speed screw 1/2 turn or so and it should help, especially if the air is cool.

Hey Mike, remember me?

I'm the one who screwed that up so bad you had to come over and fix it right
