Foot Braking Question

Foot Braking Question - 04/21/10 01:31 AM

Does anyone have some ideas on how I can increase braking power on my set up (see Signature) I need more RPMs before launch but the front brakes will not hold the truck starts to move before the rear tires will spin . I was thinking about a vacuum reservor but I'm not sure??? I only have 5-6 inches of vacuum at idle . The brakes are stock but I figured they should be enough to hold but maybe I'm wrong

I've got a Mopar Performance 2400 stall in it. I know they are not the best of quality but I would think I'd be able to at least foot brake it to 1500-1600 rpm's

Re: Foot Braking Question - 04/21/10 01:47 AM

It's actually the rear brakes that need to hold better. If you can hold the rear, you won't have to worry so much about the fronts rolling or sliding.

Brakes have to be in tip-top shape. Adjustments, seals, bled, etc. I also lightly sand the rear drums after every race or two to eliminate any glazing. That increases holding ability.

I've heard that swapping the master cylinder lines may help direct more pressure to the rear, but not 100% sure on its effectiveness.

As quicktree said, a looser converter will help get the rpm's higher before it overcomes the brakes.

You can try tighting up the shoe adjustment on the drums, but not too much or it will drag & may slow your reaction time as well.....

Re: Foot Braking Question - 04/21/10 01:50 AM

I believe that truck has a brake valve that reduces the brake pressure to the rear wheels proportionally (sp?) to the load on the rear (in bed). That could be reducing the amount of rear brakes to just about nothing.

I think my dakota had that valve on it too when I first started racing it.

I also had change the brake pedal ratio to get more pressure when staging.

Definetly more converter will let it hold easier. I use the stock power drum brakes on my 63. I run the MP .557 cam so I dont have a ton of vacum but the power brakes actually work good. I have a 9.5 converter that will flash to 4200 and I foot brake it to 2500 and it holds fine. Ron

Thanks for the advice guys I'll check the rear brake adjustment out first then go from there. thanks again

I put the Matrix pads from musclecar brakes on the rear of my Dart sport, made a big difference in staging and stopping power.

You do have discs in the ft right? If so I can`t imagine why the "whole"system can`t keep your car stable/locked on the starting line till you leave. I agree about the vert also.......a looser vert will help in ALL areas as long s it`s a good one and to say a vert has a "2400" stall is a missconception as it`s more related to YOUR power not a GENERAL power.

Correct it does have disc brakes in the front, Can you go in to some more detail on the whole converter stall/power or point me in the right direction

Re: 383man - 04/21/10 04:03 PM

What I mean is that a "general" stall rating doesn`t apply as we make more power. A 2400 stall may stall that behind a stock 383 but when you put it behind a 500" bad dog the stall goes up due to the increased torque. I would call a vert company and give them your power, weight, gears etc. and have one built for your needs.....you will NOT be dissapointed.

it's an art isn't it? Have you tried to come off at idle and waffle it? Sometimes converts like to flash instead of loading them up. My next question is why is your vacuum so low? Can you adjust on the carb to get more? I guess you could get a adjustable P-Valve and crank up the pressure? I used a Mopar 175k behind a mild 440. It worked best when I held it at 1200 and stomped it on the last yellow, it would flash to around 2800 and take off. 1.68 60 foot.

Yes it sure is

Not off idle but just off idle raise the r's just high enough to get the lope out and then hammer it

i've tried with no luck

I'm using the 166k MP converter. Just going to have to keep playing with it till I find the sweet spot.......or .. and get the check book out

you could always put a set of pedals in it....

I think if you have some one stand and watch your truck , you'll find the front brakes are holding and the tires are sliding through the light. Either hold your rpm's below that or get a higher stall converter.

I could... that would take even more and more of the green stuff. I really need to water that money tree in the back yard
