I did the same as Deepockets,BIG DIFFERENCE in front-end lift(weight transfer)!!! RandyB

Re: calvert front shocks - 04/15/10 04:40 AM

went from blowing the tires off one pass, low 1.40 next to a best of 1.36 with the calverts, and more importantly, the car is consistent in 60' now!

I've got a set if you want to check them out up close Mike, they aren't on the car yet so you can fondle them. I'll be at pacific both days this weekend, let me know and I'll bring them along.

I put the Calverts in my car early last race season.....a lot quicker front rise on the heavy snout of my Challenger. Had 3 way Comps before.
Like the guys said Mike...you won't be sorry.

Now... about that fondeling of Dustins parts...

I just got a set of fronts for my challenger.
They look way better than the lakewoods that were on my car.
I will find out this Sunday how well they work.

Re: calvert front shocks - 04/15/10 11:32 AM

I had Lakewood for years. then drilled shocks, then custom carrara (by Eles engeneering), then Comp eng 3 way then calvert 90/10. best so far close to the drilled fluid shocks but still work as a shock top end on rough tracks.
Posted By: justinp61

Re: calvert front shocks - 04/15/10 12:16 PM

Does the front end have any bounce going down the track with the Calverts? How quickly does the front settle down? I have Comp 3 ways on my Dart now, it's best 60' so far is 1.41. Not sure if they are worth changing or not.

Re: calvert front shocks - 04/15/10 12:57 PM

i made the swap last year went from 1.46-7 60' to 1.43-4 and 1" of air to 6-7" of air. you can feel the difference of the shocks by hand on how much easier to seperate

I just ordered a set of Calverts for my car today.

I am switching from Koni 3 ways to these.

Not enough dampening on the compression with the konis when you hit the brakes at 140 mph....

I found that out the hard way Sunday lol....

Best 90/10 shock I`ve ever used and got my best et and 60 ft. using em. They extend super fast and smooth and after the leave, they slowly settle down.

Re: calvert front shocks - 04/16/10 01:08 AM

Besides what others have posted about the Calverts, A very good side to them is they settle the car very gently. My car pulls the wheels about 18" and carries the tires in the air almost to the 60' mark. The tires don't just get jerked off the ground but has a nice arc to it and when the tire touch back down, it doesn't "crash down". I run my torsion bars almost on the rubber stops at rest, but going down the track the front end is up a little and if I need to get on the brakes agressively in the lights it doesn't upset the car, because the shochs won't let the front end slam down.
If you try them, you'll be pleased.
This pic was taken at about 330'.

replacing some comps 3 ways on my car with calverts also. they are way easier to pull apart. well im at it i switching to tubular uppers and adjustable strut rods from RMS. trying to get more consistent 60's out of my car. local track prep usually sucks so i need all the help i can get.

how would the calverts fare on the street compared to a lakewood 90/10? is the fact that the calverts settle gently better for emergency or panic stopping?

They`re fine on the street and my car handles great and has for over a year w/the Calverts.

Re: calvert front shocks - 04/28/10 08:40 PM

Well, I put a set on my car this week and I am not impressed at all with the compression dampening of these shocks.

They seem like they are a shade better then having no shocks at all.....

Not what I was looking for for getting on the brakes hard at the finish line....

Re: calvert front shocks - 04/28/10 08:58 PM

You are not alone Moparacer, they didn`t work on my application either I ended up putting my Koni SPA1s back on. I was really hoping for an improvement as they are highly regarded but I think they rose too quick resulting in tire spin, I tried them for 2 months under different conditions and I would spin every run. I put the Konis on and suddenly the spinning stopped.

What do you have for rear suspension and shocks?
What I'm asking is do the Calvert front shocks
need to be used with their rear suspension and
their 9 way adj shocks?

Yep, I can see my car pulling the fronts with these and purposing clean past the 330 ft timers.

Wont stand for any car I drive to do that...

Looks like I am going to have to spring for a set of double adjustable fronts for a stock A body front end.

About to post a thread on that now.

Re: calvert front shocks - 04/29/10 01:48 AM

I have their complete setup, Cal-Tracs, Mono springs and Rancho 9 way adjustable shocks. My car works good as it is, I run on a mechanical throttle stop to go 11.50s and my 60 ft is 1.50-1.54, off the stop it goes 10.50s with 60fts 1.42-1.46. It was actually better with the S/S springs but the Cal-Tracs made it more consistent.

You confuse me. First you assume how your car`s going to act based on how they "feel" in your hands then you state they`re for sale based on that ASSUMPTION or, did you try them and not like em then they HAVE been out of the garage.....which is it?
Posted By: moparacer

Re: calvert front shocks - 04/29/10 03:53 AM

I dont need to make a pass down the track with them when I can bounce the car in the garage easier then I could with the koni's set on soft.

The soft extension will be great, I already know that. But I got on the binders hard at 140 mph the other week and hit the bump stops on the lower control arms HARD.

I need more compression dampening.

Re: calvert front shocks - 04/29/10 04:22 AM

I hear what you`re saying............however I`ve seen a few cars, mine included that were a bit " bouncy" but handled well after a run on the brakes. Guess maybe you know your car well enuff to make that call.

I've considered changing out my CE 3 ways for the Calvert 90/10s but think I'll save my money and buy a good set of double adjustables. My Dart has gone 1.41 60' with the CEs on MT ET Street Radials.

Re: calvert front shocks - 04/29/10 01:26 PM

I really like mine. I ran a new best in sig with a 1.440 short time. Weight transfer in my truck is critical due to the front weight bias so it really helped me. They are less streetable due to their quick rise so be careful.

Re: calvert front shocks - 04/29/10 02:56 PM

i tried mine at the track a couple of weeks ago for the first time, and they worked as advertised. best 60 ft (by a tiny bit). we have a short shut down, and there was no problem standing on the brakes. i had comp engineering 3 ways, and actually managed to get them adjusted such that they almost felt like 90/10s, but the calverts are definitely a step up. i'll keep 'em, thanks. ditching them before trying them is stupid, sorry.

Re: calvert front shocks - 04/29/10 03:18 PM

Ron,don't judge them until you try them out! Everyone's car handles different. They were a BIG improvement over BOTH the CE 3-Way,and Lakewood 90/10 shock! Also..they're fine on the street! And our streets up here SUK!!! RandyB

That was my original point about the "bounce test" as a way of determining the quality of a shock...........but, to each his own. The track is my ultimate test.....always has been always will be even more than dynos.

yup. remember, too, that the shocks are prolly shipped horizontal, and the oil has settled along the length of the shock. it'll take some cycles to settle the oil ime.

Re: calvert front shocks - 04/29/10 04:21 PM

For the price I think they are worth a try. The front definitely rises quicker with these shocks compared to the old C/E 3 ways. It's not a fair comparison though, since we've gone to heim jointed uppers and strut bars. These also take some of the binding away compared to poly bushes. Hopefully the weather will hold out over here so I can actually try them this weekend. I'll post if theres any improvements.

IMO..nothing at all wrong with the 3 way CE's at all, i agree with you. The adjustments on them actually adjust( if that makes sense).

Give em a try before you give up on em. Every car`s different and my car responded favorably as some others. I`ve done same day track tests w/only ft. shocks and worse to best was; Lakewoods,CE 3-ways and Calverts....never tried drilled at the track.

Re: calvert front shocks - 04/30/10 12:08 PM

Your bouncing may be from having the bars on the back to tight. too much pre load??
Posted By: Tig

Re: calvert front shocks - 05/04/10 12:29 PM

Well the results were not in the caltrac front shocks favour. The car definitely had more rise at the hit but the car started to sway from side to side at the top end of the track. The faster it was the worse it got, scary stuff. We swapped the the shocks over back to my old CE 3 ways, set on 60/40 and the problem was gone. Maybe my car just didn't suit the front shock There was also a 25mph head wind all weekend which wouldn't of helped.

Do you think your car might be a little heavy for the calverts, looking at the vid, it doesn't look like front end lift is your problem, was that run with the ce 3 ways and have the strut rods loosened the front end up more.

Mick, that run was with the C E's. Yes I do think it might be too heavy. The strut rods and upper arms have loosend it up. Weight transfer was better with the calverts, I think they just rose and let too much air under the car at the top end.

I sure wish someone made shocks for my Aspen (408)cause all i have is a cheap set of gas shocks from Car Quest.Sucks to be me!My best 60' is 1.41

Just thinking here about the side to side motion you experienced on your test runs with these shocks.Would you have to run more air pressure in the rear tires if it's applying more weight transfer? If i run to low of air pressure in my slicks (under 15) my car moves all over the track.17psi with bias and 21 with radial slicks
Just a thought.
