Just some cheap Dexron. I change it every 30-40 passes since I have an aluminum front drum.

OK, seems most just use the more or less over the counter everyday trans oils...
I have been running Type F in the trans. Just had it rebuilt because, well long story short, the low/rew drum split in two..
Guess Ill continue to run Type F oil in it..

For a mostly stock torqueflite, I agree type F has its use. But my trans has 5 frictions in the front drum, and 165 psi line pressure. It doesn't need the extra friction of the type F, and I believe (hope?) Dexron will lubricate better.
And if you only change the fluid once a year (or less), I agree a name brand fluid would be my choice over a store brand.
My last fluid change, Castrol ATF was on sale almost as cheap as the store brand, so I bought the Castrol. Even though normally I use the cheap stuff. I put 7 qts in my setup when I change the fluid and filter every 30-40 passes, and my trans looks good inside (several inspections over the years). So, I am not spending $8-12/qt on fancy ATF. Have you seen the price of Royal Purple ATF?

If there is a lube issue, hp level dictates roller. I am still using type f in my 5 clutch unit. I don't see any issues with more coefficient. Most 727's I see have front clutch heat check issues, which indicates lack thereof, or clearance issues. I have gone to clearances that were verboten 20 years ago.

I agree many 727 builds have front clutch issues. But my setup doesn't (and it sounds like yours doesn't either). I like the 5 friction setup (high torque, race, application).
What front clutch clearance are you running? I have settled on 0.075", but have run down to 0.060".

Coming from the "keep it at .050" days, it was hard (25 years of .0125 per disc) to start seeing .075-.080 It makes snap ring/oversize steel selection a breeze. I'm anal, so it would sometimes take me a couple of hours, and sometimes machine shop expense, to arrive at .050.

Type F here too. I also subsitute 1 qt of 30w for a qt of trans fluid. If it ain't broke, don't be trying fix it.

dexron/mercon 5 in mine.
I've seen the fluid issue debated many times. Many testimonials for mercon derivatives, and type F fluids.
Personally, I think that over all these years of torqueflight use, by many different party's, one thing has been proven.... That A 727 doesn't care what fluid you use AS LONG as it was built right

727 6 clutches, billet steel drum, dex3 as per trans builders suggestion. sometimes doing the rounds the trans gets hot but you'd never guess with smelling my fluid. i did try type F but trans man said no so dex 3 it is.

Type F since 1973 when we ran a Art Carr trans,Marv ripes at A-1 trans says type F in 727, Dave Smitth at Pro Trans says type F with no trans brake.
Mopar engineers in the old drag racing seminars said type F also
