do you mean for a big block?

Re: Main Girdle... - 04/10/10 12:21 AM

Personally if i was still using stock blocks i'd be considering a girdle from 600 hp up. it's a piece of mind thing. the cost of added insurance is cheaper that the failure it produces.

I have one in mine...if you are racing a stock block like we are, it wont matter what HP level you are at...its a good thing to have...

whose are you thinking of using..CRE's??thats what I have..

Re: Main Girdle... - 04/10/10 06:44 AM

Iv got a 440source girdle but although its a nice piece it is only 1/4" so Im thinking of buying one that has a thicker 3/8 plate like a chedworth or similar

I have a CRE ..It was much needed..cap walk was bad..

Re: Main Girdle... - 04/10/10 01:48 PM

I had fairly severe cap walk at a little over 500 hp (but it is a stick car) Put a Hughes girdle on it last fall. Nice setup and very reasonably priced.

On whose dyno?

FWIW, I saw signs of cap walk on mine when the engine was pushing 3700#s to 117-118 MPH. Those were OEM caps held down by ARP studs, if it makes a difference.

Re: Main Girdle... - 04/12/10 02:01 AM

I am considering one as well in my 440/498 stroker. Engine is in the car and I didnt build it so not sure what is down there. Need to replace the pan so I have read that some need machine work to the block for proper fitment. Is there a reasonably priced unit that can be direct bolt in without removing the engine and needing machine work? (as in what I have read in tech articles about the block needing to be line honed for studs) Whats the story? anyone know difference regarding a kit so this can be avoided?

Re: Main Girdle... - 04/13/10 09:46 PM

I think Hughes has a kit that bolts in from the bottom?? I have been checking prices...They are all over the place!! Are they all not the same??

Re: Main Girdle... - 04/13/10 11:47 PM

Just dropped my pan. Luckily my block was outfitted with studs so I am hoping all goes well with the 1/4" girdle kit from 440 source. Most of the research I have done the 1/4" kits appear the same. I found mine for $275 . Everyone else's was $$$ Up much more once you went to 1/2". That was a trick looking piece but didnt think I needed it for my application.
