Driving Lesson 101........ - 04/03/10 03:31 PM

DO NOT aim you car at the photographers.....
I was about 10ft behind the video guy when this happened. I was talking to Chad Reynolds from BANG SHIFT.com A buddy of mine on the rail altered me to how this guy lined up....the crew guy behind him should have been beating on the side window..what a shame.

I'd be willing to bet he's had a problem with the car jumping to the right on launch and thought he'd try something new. What a shame, that was a neat racecar.

...Nope...the pass before he was pointed the other way and almost got the tree. He tried to do a burnout in neutral....major lack of experience...he's a newly licensed driver....that was his first drag car....WAY in over his head.

When you can't even stage a car straight, it's not a lack of experiance. It's a lack of common sense.

Re: Driving Lesson 101........ - 04/03/10 04:13 PM

being a new driver is one thing but drag racing is a straight line sport. one would think the basic survival instinct would be to point the car straight.

That's really sad to see. I don't really know how you would do that without trying (the lineup at the wall part), but then again - I don't even remember what it was like for my first few passes except for the fact I was in really slow junk at the time.

Re: Driving Lesson 101........ - 04/03/10 05:47 PM

The track staff with the fire extinguisher was Jeremy Ince...he passed away 2 weeks ago at the age of 26....5 days short of the 1 year anniversary of his Dad Jerry Ince's passing who was a legendary track prep guy on the west coast.

Here's another oopss...I'm outta the groove one...

Re: Driving Lesson 101........ - 04/03/10 07:45 PM

That was just about the dumbest thing I have ever seen. I mean he was'nt just a little bit off,he had to be almost looking at the wall when he launched.

Re: Driving Lesson 101........ - 04/03/10 08:44 PM

Perhaps he was just too inexperienced, but his crew should have caught that

Re: Driving Lesson 101........ - 04/03/10 09:29 PM

i was gonna say newby..
the burnout looked terrible..
and the drivers position in that willys...is prolly al little off..from a typical door car.
as far as view from inside and perspective..

no doubt someone should have flagged it down before it left..

id have like to see someone hit the kill switch sooner after the mayhem...fwiw..also.

Actualy I see it alot(I watch the starting line for the Gasser Racing series here in Western NY) with the nostalgia stuff... they either line up crooked or not in the rubber. Cant explain why, but seems like a lot of New racers in the nostalgia stuff.

Re: Driving Lesson 101........ - 04/04/10 02:35 AM

I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, but it sounds like he is definitely over his head like you said. I'm glad he didn't take out the other guy.

Re: Driving Lesson 101........ - 04/05/10 04:06 PM

you guys say lot of people line up crooked at that track?
or in general.
maybe there is something about that staging lane that makes the perspective look different..
and their points of refrence causes them to line up crooked..?

Re: Driving Lesson 101........ - 04/05/10 04:49 PM

The amazing thing is not that the driver is "over his head" but the starting line guys never waved him back and assisted in getting him staged properly allowing a potential unsafe run or someone from his crew didn't help stage him.

I can't agree more. There were a lot of folks that dropped the ball on that one!

I have been to a few tracks over the years where the groove actually points you at a slight angle but if that was the case the groove at this track must go off the track and up into the bleachers lol.

That dude was not lined up right....

Re: Driving Lesson 101........ - 04/05/10 07:11 PM

Besides not being lined up right, it looked like he was skating on ice.

Help me out here because I've never piloted anything quicker than a high 12 second street car. But it seems to me that the larger the slick you are running, the more careful you have to be about doing a proper burnout or else you have less traction than someone running a smaller slick who did a proper burnout and got that right amount of heat into the slicks. Is that correct?

Re: Driving Lesson 101........ - 04/05/10 07:29 PM

In a fast car like that,, when you realize you're not pointed straight, do you let out of the gas and point straight, or do you stay a bit on the gas and try to steer it back on track? What are you supposed to do? I've never driven something that fast with 4 wheels so I have no idea. But I do know that if you're pointed towards the wall, you'll probably hit it. Too bad.

Wow, so many things wrong with that: lined up pointed out of the groove, no one is watching, no one backs him out for a re-stage, stays in it too long, too much steering input for too long...
With B/G power and that short wheelbase, a car like that is almost a handful without those mistakes.

I was talking to Chad Reynolds(Bangshift.com) up in the scissor lift(I was on the ground) when Jeff Jackson of Jackson Bros. video yelled...Hey Ron...you gotta see this !!!!...he's the guy wearing the ND shirt in the clip...I walked up...glanced over the wall and told my newbie to the drags buddy....your gonna get to see a wreck...sure enough he got a track side seat to that. The guy behind with the crossed arms is his crew guy....they had a video person down by us...It was bad from the time he fired the car...tired to do the burnout in neutral...then does a short ugly one in drive...then takes forever to stage...notice the video guy actually cuts the tape off for a short time.

Too much car...too little time in the seat !
