Re: Harbor Freight winch - 03/31/10 05:01 AM

hey fred I have one of their 50 dollar wonders and yes it has saved my butt several times ,it doesnt have reverse but I have found ways of working around that when I've needed to ,I ve loaded all kinds of things with it ,what the heck, its only 50 bucks ,but it will load your 3000 lb car ...usually I just hook it up to a spare battery and it has a 15 foot remote ,if it bogs down it will kik the circuit breaker ,but wait for a few seconds and go again ,but you really have to have it bogged down to trip that ,mine is always with me ,its usually how i load my charger and it does it with ease ,and it weighs 2800 or so ....I will try to load a pic of one ,its the one with the built in handle and the free mount ...good luck

Re: Harbor Freight winch - 03/31/10 05:23 AM

Yes I bought a 2000 # er from Harbor Freight for my open trailer I haul junkers on. Works pretty good. Beats a come a long. Used it a few days ago to pull a 62 B-body on I drug out of a hole in the woods. 1 flat tire yet it tugged it right up & on. 5 minutes max. Think I paid $59.99 for winch, wired remote, cable, fairlead & all the stuff to wire it.

Re: Harbor Freight winch - 03/31/10 05:28 AM

I had the one similier to that and it was great, it just lacked a little power when winching up typical 3000# plus loads.

I upgraded to a Harbor freight $89.00 4000# winch and while it had more power the cable tangles everytime I try to unspool it. It still sucks to this day.

For El Cheapo that Harbor Freight $ 50 dollar unit is hard to beat. But a word of caution, that unit has changed and evolved since I bought mine. So the new ones may suck too. mike

Fred, Thats the same exact winch that I have #91781 that replaced my $49 winch.

On mine as soon as you pull that plug on the end to unspool the winch, it goes into full release and tangles within in itself. Also as delivered you need to fab up the roller release at the front. It bolts to nothing, you need to fab it. , mike

Re: Harbor Freight winch - 03/31/10 01:12 PM

Mount the winch in the cabinet permantly and use a pulley hooked to a tie down point on the floor. That's how my last trailer was setup.

Re: Harbor Freight winch - 03/31/10 02:12 PM

Fred, all I buy is the Harbor Freight winches ...
they have a 3000# winch on sale right now for 49.99
which I was going to pick up the other day when I was
there but I decided to pass because my cheapo is still
working just fine.... the 59.99 one you show has been
in my trailer for 6 years now... the clutch on it is
a little soft and slips now and then and I use to
pull my car in every time I loaded

The finest Chinese tools on the planet

I did buy an American made generator from them.. "COLEMAN". Living in the country, it's bailed me out of (many)jambs with all the power failures that seem to be normal nowdays..

Fred, look at their little camo 3000lb winch. Goes both in and out and has a wireless remote which is great. I've seen them sometime reduced to $50. Excellent buy!!!

Re: Harbor Freight winch - 03/31/10 02:55 PM

Do you guys let your winch sit out in the weather? Will it hurt the winch like the rain and things or do I need to get a box for it?
Thanks

Re: Harbor Freight winch - 03/31/10 02:58 PM

One thing I like to have on a winch is free wheel
so you can pull the cable out instead of the slow
winching it out(waste of time)... on mine I loosen
the clutch and pull it out.... hard to do on a direct
gear drive unless it has a idler gear which can move
to give it a free wheel position ..... JMO

It shouldn't be left out. The cable will rust and fowl up the whole deal.

Re: Harbor Freight winch - 03/31/10 03:03 PM

I think i bought mine at sams club and it was around that price.

but anyways, we took a junk hitch and cut it up, and mounted it on the trailer.

my winch has a hitch mount on it. works great.

if that has one, let me know and ill take pics.

Re: Harbor Freight winch - 03/31/10 03:46 PM

Fred:

I have the $59 winch which has the handle. I welded up a bracket on the front of my open trailer. The power plug and the remote plug are all removable for storage. I have the power plug modified to plug in to the trailer power plug. This winch has been on the front of this trailer for at least 3 years. Been in all kinds of weather.

The handle will come in handy if you should loose power for some reason. The clutch can be released to free wheel the wire spool. I have only had the motor overheat twice that I can remember and that was pulling a mini van and a pick-up truck on to the trailer. Let it cool down and it will go right back to work.

I bought one last summer and use my jump box instead of a battery. Works great

Re: Harbor Freight winch - 03/31/10 11:38 PM

I went through the winch gauntlet.
First I bought an identical one(with the crank) off E-bay rated a 5000lb.
It lasted 3 times pulling a rolling E body on my trailer then the cable got all twisted up going onto the spool and locked up the motor, never to work again.
The second was the camo one with the wireless remote from Harbor Freight, it died(motor locked up) on the very first pull with the same drivetrain-less E-body. I took it back to HF

I then bought this one off E-bay.
3000lb. Viper with synthetic rope.
I bought the identical winch for my ATV a few years ago and it has worked flawlessly and I have abused it pretty good.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VIPER-Max...sQ5fAccessories

This one has worked perfectly for a couple years.
I bought an ATV plate mount that the winch bolts to and it has a 2" receiver insert on the other end.
I welded a 2" receiver tube to a plate and bolted the plate to front of my trailer floor with bolts going through the floor and under the trailer frame to another plate.
The mounted winch slides in and out of the receiver tube.
So far so good.

Re: Harbor Freight winch - 03/31/10 11:50 PM

Fred I goofed. Went out to double check mine & its a 3000 # winch. I remember now I went to buy the 2K & the 3K was on sale for $59.99 so I pounced on that. Still please with it & how it works. If it was something I used every day I'd get a nicer one from Warn or something. For the 3 or 4 times a year its all I need.

Re: Harbor Freight winch - 03/31/10 11:55 PM

ive got the cheapy 59 one with the crank..
used it a bunch...
its slow..so i put a pulley with a swivel hook
and run the cable to the car then back up to a fixed point on the trailer..
it pulls twice as fast...with less aggrivation..
and its removeable..i keep it an old saw bag..
bought it in a pinch..but have been using it ever since..
pulls 3400 lb duster up the ramp and on trailer no issues..
fwiw.
cheapst.

Those cheep ones with the plastic cover work pretty well for the bux and how they build them, just dont open the cover cause the mouse will escape

Re: Harbor Freight winch - 04/01/10 01:39 AM

Been using the 2000# HF one for at least 4 years. I got it for $49 with a 25% off coupon. Pretty good deal.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=92860

I easily pulled a chrysler 300 and a couple of Monaco/Polara wagons on my open trailer with no issues.
