Just curious if you could sleeve a 318 then bore it out to 4.04 or higher. Thanks.

Havent priced sleeves lately but it used to be around $100 per hole + boring.

You could probably talk me out of my 69 340 block for less than that, or quite a few others I would guess.

But hey if money is no object then go for it !
oh and pick up a stroker kit to go with it as well

I don't think it is a bad idea. The motor will have really strong cylinder walls if you decide to do it.

I'm sure it could be done, but is the cost worth it? average cost a few years ago for sleeves was $100 a hole...not sure if that's gone up or down in the past year or so, but if you figure that, plus the cost to machine the sleeves afterwards...you're probably looking at $1,000-$1200 to turn a 318 into a 340. how much would a 340 block run you at the swap meets, online, etc.?

You really need to sonic test it first. It may be able to be bored to 4" (360 size...), but you have to have a little meat to give the sleeve some stability. I'd be concerned about leak posibilities by doing that on all 8. A std 318 type wouldnt concern me. But removing that much wall structure does.

Just buy a junkyard 360 [ $50.00-$100.00 in my part of the world ]. Almost any 360 can be bored .030 without checking and many can go .060+. .040 over 360 = 367 cu. in. vs 4.04 bore 318 = 340. 360 = low cost, more cubes. Sleeved 318 = high cost, fewer cubes.

one of my racing buddies has done this. he still tells people it's a 318. at $100 a sleeve you guys pay too much, down here with our $ conversion we're paying the equivilant to $60usd for HD sleeves they fit to diesel bulldozer engines.

My 340 was sleeved on al 8 when i bought it,
Makes stable cylinderwalls. I like the idea of a sleeved 318 stroker, tell people its a stock 318!

Supposedly there is a 318 block that was manufactured in the late sixties for two years only that some have successfully taken to 100 over...but can't remember the years or block # .... ??????

Even if you can get a 340 out of it, you still won't have thicker main journals, or 4-bolt mains like most race blocks have or can be fitted with.

I don't know what the industry standard is for remaining wall thickness for dry sleeves < how far you can bore to fit the sleeve> I don't think the sleeve is structurally strong by its self, the sleeves have some benefit in ware from the rings vs the cast iron block but I don't think its a cost effective way to increase bore

That was what I am thinking... Sleeving a block with the normal type of sleeves will leave material behind to help stabilize things. Removing all the original cylinder material I think would not support the sleeve or deck well enough. Never mind the cost/return issue.
