broken wheel studs? - 03/24/10 03:09 AM

I broke the wheels studs off one side of the rear of my truck. The axles are moser with their 1/2inch screw in wheels studs..The rear end is a 8 3/4 with a 4.30sure grip, the rear wheels are weld prostars 15x12 with 31x16 tire.Any ideas on what to look for or any suggestions. The studs broke all at one time.I have all ways had trouble with the lug nuts backing off on the rear.Is there anything special I need to do with big tires?I am clueless on this

I would think the wheel was loose a little to shear
them off like that.... are your lug nuts the shoulder
type... if so make sure they arent bottoming out
before the wheel is really tight.... some are very
close and you might think they are tight

ARP makes a nice 3" stud. Either that or send the axels back and have them driled for 5/8's studs.

Like Raaff said, check the shank on your lug nuts to make sure they aren't bottomed out giving you a fasle torque reading.

I agree, happened to me. Had to get thicker washers.

One reason is loose lug nuts, that is really hard on studs. Good idea to check the lug nut length, and thicker washers could help.

I like to use a torque wrench to 100 lb-ft. Then after making the first pass, torque them again. They should stay tight after that. Since I rotate my slicks side to side every 20 passes, this gets done often. Otherwise think about checking them periodically with the torque wrench. Maybe every 3 months. It can't hurt to check them at the beginning of each race day if you are having problems with them coming loose.

To me you dont need extra long nuts... anything over
the diameter of the stud is just extra material and
more tuning to get it off.... JMO
