235 or 255/60x15 M.T. ET Street Radial on 70 Duster - 03/16/10 03:43 PM

Time to buy new tires. The car is a 1970 Duster, 8 3/4 , 4" bolt pattern, 10 " drums, superstock springs(002&003)the front hangers are reversed to get the back of the car down. The wheels are 15x7 4" bolt pattern Wheel Vintiques Rallye's. I do not want to roll the lip or cut the wheel well opening as this is a 37,000 mile original paint car. I tried finding this info in the archives but couldn't. This is my 1st. post, I'm going to attempt a picture attachment so please have patience.

On my 70 Dart 245/60/15 on a 15" wheel with 4.5" backspace fit with room. I would go with the 255/60/15 on a Duster.

..i went 225/70.
they look a little small but it keeps the tires within the confines of the wheelwell and still appears stock.
i have seen lots of dusters with 275/15/60.gives the car a nasty attitude but won't look stock ...
what do wheel vintiques charge for 15 x 7 small bolt ralleyes?
i was on their web site and can't find the prices.

I am going to 15x10 5.5BS and 275/60/15's soon.

Re: 235 or 255/60x15 M.T. ET Street Radial on 70 Duster - 03/16/10 08:21 PM

I bought the wheels from Summit they were $109.00 each. The slick's on the car now are 8x26x14 and they work well, unfortunately the sidewall's are cracked so since I'm buying I figured I would get something I can drive to the track with instead of trailering or changing tires at the track although changing tires at the track did bring back memories I just think they should remain memories. I figured the width of the 255x60's would be fine, it's the 27.1" advertised height that concerns me. If anyone has pictures I would appreciate seeing them.

They look like they fit nice. Do you know what the backspacing is on your 15x7's and what diameter the tires are? How much room between the tire and the spring? And finally do you have any pics. of the car from behind?

Re: 235 or 255/60x15 M.T. ET Street Radial on 70 Duster - 03/16/10 09:54 PM

Lots of guys dont know what the first numbers actually mean...Its actually a measurement of the sidewall/bead up the side wall to the center of the tires in Metric units.
So the larger first numbers always means both increase in height, and also foot print... I always put the largest set of tires possible when I order, of coarse taking in account gear also.
Said that there's not going to be a bunch of diff between the two..

I think those rims only come with one backspace IIRC. I have no idea what it is either. There is plenty of room and height for a 255/60/15 on your car. No problems whatsoever. I know guys running the 15x7 with 275/60/15's with no modifications. They are pretty tight up to the leafs though.

I can run outside and snap some pics of the 255's but trust me there is no problem running them. If you already have 15x7 with SBC on your car then you have the same rims I have. 255's I believe are ~27.05 diameter.

I am actually going to be copying 67Wedge's son's duster. I think they ran 15x10 w/5.5BS and 275's without even moving the leaf springs. It is the best looking stance I have ever seen on a duster. I'll attach a pic of it for you. PM 67Wedge for more info.

Here are some pics of mine. Forgot to measure but i'd say 1/2-3/4" clearance to the leafs.

I'll be going to 4.5" bolt circle in a few months and will be selling my 15x7 4" BC. If interested PM me.

Not true.
The first number is the WIDTH, in millimeters. The second it the aspect ratio, a number representing a percentage of the width, which gives you the sidewall height from rim edge to top of tire. Say you have a 225/60R15; 225 is 8.86" WIDE and 60% of that is 5.316", so you double that (10.632"), add your rim height (15"), and you have your tire HEIGHT, which in this case would be 25.632"

i think a 275/60-15 et street radial would work with the right ofset but it may be very close, also from what i have learnt by fliping the pages of diferent catalogs i have noticed that the size in mm isnt realy telling you alot except sizing within the same series of tires since diferent manufacturers of tires seems to measure at diferent points, when reading some tire catalogs i noticed that there is a pretty big diferens in sidewall with and thread with on something that is advertised as the same size tire i have had a 255/60-15 mt et street radial tire without a rim and held it in my stock wheelwells on my duster and im sure they would fit without trouble if the ofset is fairly right

Yep, a 225 would be that and a 255 would be 27.05 exactly as I stated. ??

On our Duster we did move the leaves in with the 3/4 offset shackle kit from Mopar and trimmed the outer wheel lip. I think your best bet would be a 255/60/15 with no trimming

In this particular case, yes. I was just making it clear, because it seemed to me that you were implying that "255's...are ~27.05in diameter", which is exactly what you wrote and nothing more to explain that you were talking about that particular tire size of 255/60R15
