any R5/P7 turbocharged motors out there? - 02/19/10 08:19 PM

From day to day Iam more and more thinking to trie build my new R5/P7 motor with turbocharger. Seems very interesting and ofcorse cost a lot, but seems to be worth to trie...? I got some good tips from "go green" but everyone who have some hints/tips to share are welcome!
Thanks
Georg

Go for it!
I don't see why you shouldn't unless there's rules against it for the class you're going to be racing.

There is no motor limits in our "ProStreet" class. What I ask here is help from you who have been there and done that. I mean building turbocharged race motor/motors. As turbo motors are quite new for me, I want to hear as many tips and thoughts as possible to make this project work first time and good.

Thanks
Georg

Then turbocharge and beat the other guys.
Like any other engine, keep it out of detonation. A turbo motor is less violent than a nitrous motor. It will live much longer.

It's not that hard to build. A moderate engine with sufficient boost will make serious power.
You need to think about air flow. It needs to get in and out as easily as possible, just like any other engine. A fairly mild cam will work fine and require less exotic valvetrain.

Just that are there any R5/P7 Dodge motors out there which is turbocharged? I heard that there is...
I ask it because what to know what good/bad sides R5/P7 motor have for turbocharging? Are the lower end strong enough etc.? Heads seems to be very good for doing it...

Go here and ask your questions they will be happy to advise you. http://www.smreperformance.com/

I asked them about turbo on my hemi99 motor and they advised against it. They said the pro stock motors have light internal parts and could not take alot of boost(like 2000+ hp) Maybe the Nascar motors would be different, i dont know, but you could ask them and find out.

Re: any R5/P7 turbocharged motors out there? - 02/23/10 03:38 AM

Three things to think about:

1) Most connecting rods fail on the exhaust stroke. The heavy piston flies upwards and there's no cushion of air (compression) to help slow it down. The crank pulls the rod down but the piston keeps going. It rips the rod in half and the piston slams the head.
With a turbo motor there's some back pressure in the exhaust stroke. The piston is pushing the air into the turbo and creates boost in the exhaust header. That boost helps slow the piston. It's not an impressive amount of force but it is there.

2) RPM = death. If you spin a motor faster to make more power you're going to have trouble. Spinning an engine at 7200 rpm makes internal stress 144% higher than spinning it at 6000 rpm. If you keep the engine speed moderate you can make more power using turbos with less stress.

3) Maybe this chart will help you understand internal engine pressures better. The turbo motor in this chart makes twice the power of the naturally aspirated motor BUT the peak pressure is only increased 20%.

Slow the engine down 1200 rpm and turbocharge it to make more power with less stress on the connecting rods as well as the rest of the engine.

I don't understand the people who say an 99 hemi can't be turbocharged.Yes you can't or don't want the rotating assembly the prostock guys use ,that given -I have a new crank ,rods and pistons and thick wall wrist pins that were made to my specs and see no reason this engine will not make power, the only thing I don't like is the block ,but it is a carbon block .They twist these engines to 10 thousand rpms and then drop the clutch and they seem to hold up petty good.Maybe I'm hard headed but I expect at least 2500 plus horsepower out this thing and that is not dreaming .If you are going to turbo any engine count on changing just about everything but block and heads ,and buy the best for the intended horsepower you plan and be honest in your goal and then go do it.If you listen to someone tell you it can't be done ,your never know if it will.

My opinion on the r5 p7 engine is the engine would be a great turbo engine, you just not going to get a lot of cubic inches out of it .Another item is the head gasket ,with the open deck ,I don't know how it would handle high boost pressures a turbo is going to make.I would think if you look at what the ford guys did a few years back with the 360 to 400 cubic inch engine that they ran single turbos on ,would give you a fair idea what a r5 could do .They took an engine with less head clamping and made it work and I don't see why it wouldn't work peroid.I would like to do one myself ,but in my class I need cubic inches.

I was surprised they advised agaist it too. i was going to use all the stock components, tho, so maybe thats why they said that. I agree, the block is very strong and i think your motor will make all kinds of power!(and live!)

It would be nice to see some first hand info on the R5/P7 under hard boost. I'm sure that Troy's R5 build was / is at low PSI. The only drawback with the open deck would be the cylinders moving around under high boost. It seems to be a issue in imports cars but the the R5 or the 99 Hemi is a lot stronger but still a issue nun the less..

Didn't Jesel build a Ram pickup with a twin turbo R5 to run on the salt flats a couple years ago. I think it did 200mph. I have an R5 P7 sitting in the shop.I was thinking of the turbo thing as well. Keep us posted on the progress.

Did you ever boost your R5?

Re: any R5/P7 turbocharged motors out there? - 10/31/16 06:33 PM

I know a 10.5 racer that used all three types of power adders including twin 88 MM turbo. Intercooling using race gas is mandatory to keep the motor out of detonation. He chose a water to air intercooler (it was twice as big as all the other racers in his class, he won that series every year he raced in it including when he used a Pro Charger work) with ice in it and he said to use the biggest one you can up
That was a real high $$$ maintenance motor though, short parts life work

I heard rumors Wayne Jesel's boosted R5 made 2400hp..

NASCAR P7 motors have huge flowing heads and are made to turn big rpm, and have thin rings.
Gotta think they wouldn't be the way to go with a turbo

What ever happened to the guy above with the red avenger? He always had fast stuff and used to post all over. ??

He is going to need new pistons for a turbo motor and at that time he can run any ring package he wants

Been running a 40 pill in my R5 aluminum block. Cylinders have not moved.

Noah Strickland sprayed a 32 pill on his 358 drowning it with fuel and way overtimed. Only damage was pistons. Head gaskets didn't leak.

The biggest problem is finding a cam core to run a turbo grind. Lsm is willing to build one but is pricey. Comp cams said there price was $3000.00 for 1 cam core are $3000.00 for 3 cores. Then I find ought that lsm makes comps custom cores. There are no cores that can go anything over 112 lobe separation. James at Bullitt cams said he is willing to do a custom core, you might talk to him if you are thinking of going this route. If you find anything different I would like to know. Iam talking about roller cams. Good luck.

Leon what have you run on the 40 pill?? That's cool!
