Wow about cast crank strokers for 450hp:

360 LA or/vs 360 magnum?

E-brock vs RHS vs X or J head?

Like this maybe with smaller cam??? Which cam?

I'm asking the questions along with you. I'm in about your same situation.

Question: Least expensive path to 450 hp that's easy on the valvetrain/parts, not a lot of maintance, and a small enough cam that not going to lug and lope real hard?

And the parts you have lying around do factor into the budget. What size valves are in those J Heads you have? That may factor in the decision making.

Should be 1.88 in and 1.60 ex at least if they are J head.

I thought 71 340 J's are 202 in and 1.60 ex but may have switched to smaller 1.88 intake late in production??? Don't know about that.

Really???

If so, sell the T/A heads and get a set of RHS x heads from Brian at IMM/indio Motor.

Getting 450hp from a 360 shouldn't be too tough and the RHS x heads would support it no problem.

Check out the 408 build he just did in the race forum.

With offset T/A rockers?? I'd get some pics of it to make sure about the ID.

If they are real T/A head you can sell those T/A head cores and pay for some rebuilt or new heads that are better and maybe some money left over for the rest of the motor build.

Not to race dyno sheets...but consider this one also.
Jesse Lackman built a very stout 520hp/540tq stroker. 408 based on Magnum block

Extremely mild, very streetable stroker....

Best way or cheapest way? Either mild port eddy heads or these RHS heads will do.
10.3:1, hyd cam around 240@ .050 like Comp 285HL, rpm intake, 750 holley and good headers.
Lets not forget quality machine work!!

MP cast 4" crank (got it from a friend for 200 bucks)
Eagle Rods (I Beam)
Ross Pistons
Basic Rings from Ross
MP Hyd Roller camshaft, forget the part# and duration, its the crate motor shaft with .501 int/ .513 ext.
Iron Ram heads, stock size 8mm valves and beehives. OOTB
MP 1.6 Roller Rockers
M1 single plane intake w/ 1" super sucker
Proform 750 cfm carb
1 5/8" basic headers

What about a 4" stroker 360 block to 450hp?

That will live off of junk california 91 octane Arco gas?

My situation is 85.21 miles to Willow Springs at 3800 rpm cruising. Then run the car on the big track from 8am to 5pm with one 15 minute session per hour. Then drive back. And it's my car to go to the grocery store with too.

May i ask, what does it run? Sounds like a good build for my duster.

Re: Budget 360/ 450 HP - 02/08/10 02:14 PM

I'd start with a magnum block, stock crank, stock rods w/good bolts. KB107's at 0 deck

eq318B's, RHS X or edelbrock heads, will be ~10.5-11:1 range

use stock magnum roller lifters, and a roller cam in the .340" lobe lift, and 230@.050" range

eddie RPM air gap, and probably an 800cfm eddie thunder series carb, and full lenght headers.

Re: Budget 360/ 450 HP - 02/08/10 02:36 PM

I recently tested a mild 360 that went in a 66 Dart, the engine created 358 hp with no problem.
dual plane intake
650 edelbrock 800 made no more HP
mild cam lift in the 480's {don't remember specifics}
cast iron J heads with no extra work.
roller rockers
flat top pistons {approx. 9 to 1}
balanced rotating components
This was a fun engine to test!
sipped the premium pump gas and ran Smooooth.

According to the volumetric efficiently of this combo a set of heads {more flow} larger cam, more compression and the 800 carburetor {or larger} would be the next upgrades.
good luck on your build
