Stroker???? - 01/25/10 06:19 PM

Looking at doing something little different. Don't get me wrong I love Big blocks but the wife drove the Duster last year without the secondaries and loved it. I'm putting my dart together now and I'm looking at something she can drive and have fun with while I gather parts for the Hemi. With that said I was thinking of a small block stroker. I have a bunch (5) 318 truck blocks with the X on the front, I also have a 340 std bore. I would rather a build stroker 318 but am open to other ideas to. So maybe you guys can give me your stroker builds so I have an Idea of which way to go. I dont want to spend a ton of money but I'd like the car to run in the 11s or high 10s. The cars getting a cage and ladder bar with a 9in rear. Glass front end but full inter. Help me out please.....

Well I would vote for the 340 to go 416! No replacement for cubic inch displacement??

Re: Stroker???? - 01/25/10 09:01 PM

the 318 is do able since off the shelf pistons are avalable...

KB makes a dish and flat top pistons ....scat I beam rods need no grinding ...

a cast crank could be used and internally balanced due to the light weight of the pistons and rods...

the 318 .030 would give 390 cu inches...
and since you have 5 blocks...

My Aspen has a 408 Scat stroker kit build with KB744 pistons, forged I-beams,and forged Scat crank.I run eddy heads with a 590MP cam, hughes 1111 springs,Super Victor intake,750hp carb, and TTI headers.Your car is a lot lighter then mine so you should be at least a mid 10 or better if you ran this combo.

if your super cheap, you could take a 360 crank and have the mains turned down and it would probably work in one of the 318 blocks without new pistons or anything. not the best combo but probably the cheapest.

There is a 408" small block Mopar stroker , magnum headed longblock, for $3,400 at Summit. 375hp/450#. For the driven showy car crowd. 4" stroke so you don't need much gear. 3.23 would be plenty for fun , but would not make 11's.

Cheaper than the new crank and pistons and block/Head work. Sounds like a deal.

$50 ebay all in 1 hei. $30 taylor uni fit wires. A carb, etc, and your done.

I'm leaning more towards a strocked 318, to 390. I got a couple turbos setting around maybe I could throw them suckers on there.... anyone have a 390 build.. throw them out here..

Re: Stroker???? - 01/26/10 01:04 PM

My father has a 408 stroker using a 360 block. 360 J heads with 1.94 intakes, 11 to 1 compression, MP .528 mechanical cam, and 1.6 ratio rockers. Pulls very consistent low 11's in a '72 Dart. I know high tens are reachable with better heads but he can't justify spending the money on a bracket car and I agree with him. Sonic check your 318's. One of them may be able to be bored enough for over 400 cubes.

Thats kinda what I was thinking bout. I know that some of the X blocks have been bored to 4in. Just want something that will be fun for the wife. But that 390 with twin turbo is looking good to..

I am interested in hearing about your biturbo 318 stroker.

Why not try +.030 318 w/ 3.79 340 Stroker crank?

Are your turbos going to fed by EFI or a carb?

Re: Stroker???? - 01/26/10 03:54 PM

Well I'm thinking carb. I just wanted more cubes. I'd be willing to do anything. Just want it to be a good running street/strip car. I'm really surprised that more people haven't post small block comb's guess there's not that many out there.

Re: Stroker???? - 01/26/10 04:49 PM

There's a bunch. Be patient and otehrs will chime in. As for your use...
The 318 is cool. Your head choice will be important tho and there's a lot of different choices there. For a NA engine, I like the smaller chamber smaller valve to limit shrouding on the small bore. So something like the RHS/Indy heads with 1.92 intakes and the LA valvetrain. With some decent porting will cost around $2K and move enough air for 550hp at a reasonable rpm. Run a solid flat tappet, forged crank, and I wouldn't use SIRs for that build. Get a decent rod. Stud the mains, do the usual prep and go racing. Its the stroke that makes id fun. Give it heads to breath, don't go huge on the valve size because of the 3.94 bore, and have fun.

I have a set of rpm for the small block, that are ported thats why I wasthinking about running the turbos with a blow thru.
