Nostalgia Super Stock Photo Thread - 01/21/10 12:11 AM
Awhile back there was a good thread with alot of information and photos of Nostalgia Super Stock cars. Mopars seem to be the most popular NSS car but maybe we could include shots and info about all makes? I just thought it would be cool to see what NSS cars are out there across the country. No brand bashing, just spreading the knowledge of the class. What do you think??

One of my favorites. I was at Maple Grove when Jack Werst and Ray Barton were shaking down the car right after it was completed. Jack has since sold it.

I have about 90% of the parts to complete the car. Wheels, tires, brakes, trans,Dana, gauges, radiator, etc. The engine is a 572 Indy headed wedge,15-1,.800 roller,BME rods,Jesel belt,T&D rockers,Indy box intake,750 Eddy carbs. The wheel wells have been stretched 4",chrome moly cage,tubbed,36" S&W ladder bars,Koni dbl adj shocks. It will have stock appearing interior, chrome bumpers and push button trans. I hope to make passes this summmer. It depends how fast I can get the body done. This car is all home built so it's taken me some time.

Just to let everyone know, Goodguys Rod & Custom Association will run a full NSS program in 2010. It will be an all run, all make program with NSCA rules. We'll be at Indy, Columbus, Rt 66, Norwalk and Bowling Green. Details will be up on my website in the next month or so.

Some Down South Jukin' from Texas. Not many cars down here yet. I was in York last year ready to head to Beaver Springs, but my cousin in Maryland wanted me to come down that Sunday as it was the only day she could fit me in her schedule. That looked like a good race and missed meeting Steve 1118 and Bear Bob.

Certainly not in spirit or quality of cars, but our closest event is The Monster and it's a twelve hour drive. But, like I said, we're working on it. Hey, come on down and do Houston with us this year......

Re: Nostalgia Super Stock Photo Thread - 01/22/10 04:31 PM
I know it's incredible, what is happening, and I am enjoying every last second of it.
Twenty years ago, on the occasions when I took the car to the races, I would be chided for still racing that "antique". Now, the reaction is completely different.
Living in western Pa, we are now forced to pick and choose which races to attend. We could not possibly be able to make all the events within driving distance during the summer. It's incredible.....I never thought I would see this again.

You seem to be very worried about this thread. Two posts and a harassing PM to me. If you don't like it, don't open the thread. It's not about the brand, it is about the class. Please post a shot of your NSS car.

Pretty cool Fairlane with a Sixpack scoop! I like to see the non-Mopar cars too! I enjoy them all. I'd take any of them over a modern commuter box/blob with no style. It looks like everyone is switching over to the modern wheels from the Torq Thrusts. One more move away from nostalgia. The oversized scoops was one of the first moves. They better watch it or they will start looking like a Pro Mod car. I can remember when Pro Mod cars looked pretty close to stock (body wise).

The first N/SS race I ran at was Milan Mi July 1992. The cars I remember being there were Ron Eros 64 Belvedere,Paul Suloff driving the "Old Brownie" clone,Rick Johnsons "No Sponser" 62 Grand Prix Paul Adams "Fountain of Youth" Fairlane. Our Lickity Split 63 Polara was not lettered yet. It was all heads up then. I believe the second race was at Martin MI. Most cars were running high 10/ low 11 second range as I remember.

Jody and others, great site. I love em all too. The "Hang em High" car was owned by Allen Obenchain. He also ran a '64 red Dodge with white diamonds all over it. It was called Jack Of Diamonds. Allen passed away a few years ago. I met his son Ben at Beaver a few years ago. They were trying to sell the AWB car to help with finances. I haven't seen nor heard from him since. Allen was a good racer, and an even better guy. TD

Swingin',
Unfortunately, NSS years stop at '68 in most clubs. The class was originally designed for cars that were originally big block powered with dual quads. Some organizations have loosened up their program to promote car count, but most still stop at '68. I'm sure someone has a rule book from the old NSCA or NMCA that dictates the eligible cars for the class. Great car, not NSS though. Tom

Tommy's right. They do make some exceptions for factory produced SS package cars, like Hemi Darts/Cudas; AMX; and CJ's, but most do stop at 68.
Although I totally understand how this upsets some folks, I do understand why they do hold fast and stick to this. They are under constant pressure to make exceptions, especially to smallblock Camaros and the like, but the mindset is that if you do that then you turn it into just another bracket race, and it loses its uniqueness.
Tommy, by the way, great write up in Muscle Car Review!!

Re: Nostalgia Super Stock Photo Thread - 01/25/10 03:38 PM
Thanks Steve. I talked to the guys from 422 Motorsports. They had Nine cars at the Oaks, PA Motorsport Show on display. They are bringing on more sponsors this year, and the purse will increase significantly. Hopefully you and many others will come race with us. Last year we averaged somewhere around 30 cars per event. Usually it was the same 20 or so regulars, plus some locals from the area where we were racing. I know there are people that aren't fans of the 422 guys or the organization, but I encourage you to give it a try. There are a ton of good people (racers as well as fans) at every event. The mood is light, and the competition is good, and the N/SS cars are great. Fast or slow, there's a place for you in N/SS...the best class ever conceived.
Keep the pictures coming. I'm loving every one, especially the ones I haven't seen before. I'm trying to figure out how to shrink the size of my saved pictures so I can contribute. Any help is greatly appreciated. TD

Tommy, Ronnie, Kyle and I intend to attend as many of the events as are within reasonable driving distance for us. Those include of course the Beaver, Numidia, MG, and Mason Dixon, maybe a couple of others.
We had some cars on display at the Pittsburgh World of Wheels this past weekend and we talked the circuit up very hard. We have even been pushing Pittsburgh Raceway Management to get a hold of Dink to see if something could be worked out....it would be a big hit in western Pa.
The best class ever concieved.....absolutely and positively.

Wow, I didn't know Allen passed away. He was a great guy and we raced together quite a bit back in the mid '90s when he was racing the red car with the diamonds. He was always good to talk with at the track. Thanks for the info Tommy.

Steve,
If you need to get in touch with Dink, PM me. I'll give you his number. I'm sure he'd be interested if there are no conflicts. It's amazing looking at this site, how many N/SS cars are in our area. If we could all get our stuff together, we could have races with nearly one hundred cars in attendence. It would be great to see. Beaver's Nostalgia Nats, and Atco's N/SS Spectacular are the biggest races I've run. They're all fun though. TD

Haha doubt it. This actually brings up a good point though..The driver should be a machine. He/she shouldn't have any effect on the performance of the car. Finding what shift points, burnout procedure, etc., works, is a question of tuning not driving. The driver needs to be able to do exactly what is called for in these tuning procedures and do it every time.

Originally a max wedge car later converted to a Hemi. Later on it's front end was swapped out for a '65 and a twin turbo Hemi was installed. Bud ran it a few times on the drag strip and took it to Bonneville where it tried to fly. It was later parted out and is gone. This shot is from 75-80 by the way.
Keep the NSS cars coming guys!!

Dallas has recently redone the T-bolt and is scheduled to bring it back out to go after the SS/A & B record. This is an original T-bolt by the way, no clone. Originally it was owned by David Harrell and purchased out of Al Means Ford. It was called the "Crop Duster" in '64.

Here are a few for tonight. Everyone has been posting some great stuff. I've never seen many of these cars.
Here is a question:
Who was the first to have a car that would eventually be called a Nostalgia Super Stocker?
Maybe the Arlen Vanke Ol' Brownie '63 Plymouth or the Living Legend '63 409 Chevy?
The first N/SS race I ran at was Milan Mi July 1992. The cars I remember being there were Ron Eros 64 Belvedere,Paul Suloff driving the "Old Brownie" clone,Rick Johnsons "No Sponser" 62 Grand Prix Paul Adams "Fountain of Youth" Fairlane. Our Lickity Split 63 Polara was not lettered yet. It was all heads up then. I believe the second race was at Martin MI. Most cars were running high 10/ low 11 second range as I remember.
Doug
I think the Midwest Nostalgia SS Assoc was one the first to organize NSS. They had Chevys, Pontiacs, Fords and Mopars. They did an exhibition at the NMCA finals in Memphis in early 90s. The next year NMCA included the first NSS class, which was Heads UP. Those were the days!!!!

Re: Nostalgia Super Stock Photo Thread - 01/30/10 04:27 AM
Ah the MW NSS. I should confess that Paul kicked my but the first year or so. I can still hear Terri Witenburg saying "Dougie you pull over here and we'll find you somebody to race" It was almost always Paul in "Old Brownie". Great teacher though, I learned a lot from losing. I remember my 12 year old son looking at my runner up time slip at Stanton Mi. against Paul telling me "Dad if you had a .500 tree you would have tied him". I did learn how to win a bit later though. Hope my new car is ready this year so I can come back.

Doug, do you have any good pictures of that '63? You took me out at Quaker City in 1995 (your car hadn't been lettered). In fact, you borrowed some jackstands off of us the night before to change transmissions.
I always liked that car.....I have it here on video somewhere, before it was lettered. That was a clean, good looking car. Whatever happened to it?

Jim sold the car to a guy Named Tony Urbanik. My son drove the car for him with the name changed to "Last Minute Madness". The last weekend my son raced the car he won both days at the Chysler Classic in Martin. Tony didn't show up that weekend. We didn't know untiil Monday that he and his family had been murdered on that Friday. The car went to Tonys step sister as he had no living relatives. We tried to buy it back but she wouldn't deal. She sold it to someone in Pa a few years back. The guy e-mailed me once and I never heard from him again. I do have some good pictures ,I'll have to get my wife to scan them.

When Jess sold the GC 63 I am pretty sure it went to someone around Austin. Possibly the guy that was collecting the fastest 50, Richard Tisdale. I have never seen or heard of the car since. I have no idea when he sold the red Hemi car, he may still own it. I have not seen him in years. The Sturgis motorcycle accident really took the wind out of his sails.

Yes he did. He raced it in pro nostalgia. He put a carbon fiber front end and doors on it. He now has converted it back to a legal ss car with a single 4brl. carb. He has not raced it yet though. That car is the original Stinger car from the Detroit area from way back.

I'd like to see the convertible set up for N/SS. Do you have pictures of it? I'm in a long term relationship with a black '64 Plymouth convertible. I am planning to set it up as a N/SS car, but run it on the street as well. Maybe 11.50's.

Does he plan on racing this year? Does he still have the SS/AH car?

He has not mentioned his racing scedual this year so I do not know. He mentioned to me that he would like to sell the cuda.

I talked till I was blue, but I can't convince this local to come race NSS. It's a beautiful car, but it has a box, brake and stop.

Great thread and I think it would be great to see all of these cars at "The Spring Nostalgia Nationals" at National Trail Raceway on April 30 & May 1 , 2011. for more info go to www.sledcityevents.com
