727 pump bearing

727 pump bearing - 01/14/10 08:16 AM

my trans wasn't running as good as i wanted so i took it back to the shop. before he got it i looked in the pan, it had some bearing material in there. trans man says it's because i start & run it in park for too long. BS was my reply, it's an A&A ultimate brake & only starts in park. usually once it's started i idle the car in Neutral. is he talking crap or is this the case, if it runs in park too long it'll kill the pump bearing?

i saw the bearing. it looks like someone took to it with a scraper. 2/3rds of the inner surface was like flaked off.

A pic is going to be worth 1000 words.

BTW .. there is a BUSHING in there .. not a bearing.

torqueflites do not have cooler flow in park.if you run it in park for a long time it could wipe out a pump bushing. run it in neutral.sonnax corp and transgo make a manual valve for the valve body that gives cooler flow in park. a bad electrical ground can cause bushings to pit, flake apart.run a ground strap from trans to frame.hope this helps john.

yes you're right it is a bushing, sorry my bad, wrong word. it's not ptted but like flaked like chrome does when it falls off. sorry no pic.

I don't think that running in park would be the cause. --- Because, the pump is pumping in park. But it is not under pressure.

I know this because when I test a valve body on the flow bench, the fluid from the pump is gushing out of the manual valve bore hole.

I always start my car neutral..just because of this..

the converter does not charge in park. that bushing is pressurized in park, yes? maybe case misalignment?

The bushing is lubricated by the fluid that leaks past the pump rotors; if the crankshaft is turning, the pump rotors are turning and the bushing is being lubricated regardless of what gear it's in.

thanks for all the advice. i got my trans back today, fully checked, & flushed with a new bushing & a new drive hub on the converter. line pressure has been increased to help with band application so i'm told. the converter was split & checked & flushed & rewelded. hopefully it's all go. trans man didn't charge me so all is good i hope. he said he's seen the car on tv enough times so i might be hitting him up for sponsorship next season.
i think it was badly installed.

Make sure the converter hub is not cracked.

This reminds me of a plroblem I had years ago. I had a pump bushing failure twice before finding this little issue. Try looking at the dowl pins on the block and make sure that they are sticking out far enough to completly engage the mating holes in the transmission. In my car, the tapper on the dowl pin only engaged into the chamfer of the case and allowed it to move around. The end result was leaking converter seal and worn bushings.

I would check the car grounding (engine/trans/chassis)

i'm sure it's just a bad alinement problem caused by the trans mans assembly. the converter hub had some nasty grooves in it so they put a new drive hub on the converter for me this time. the engine is solid mounted so i doubt there's an earthing problem. the locating dowels on the engine/trans mating surface are a tight fit so i don't think thats a problem either. just a bad day in the trans shop.
