Update Pics on my SuperBee UPDATED 1/24/10 - 01/08/10 10:49 PM

For any who care...... it's getting primed this weekend. Not sure when it will be in color, but should'nt be too much longer, I'd expect it to be in paint booth sometime in Feb. Stopped in this AM to pay bill to this point..... 197 hours so far to put 1/4's on, fix rear window channel, install 1/4 extensions, re-did the tubs, added another 2X3 frame piece under fuel cell area to connect rear downbars on cage, repair several sections of rocker panels & inner fender/floor areas & straighten out everything.... The front fenders were a mess straightness wise, & the cheap Taiwan 1/4 panels were not much better.

Fun fun... glad all I'm doing is paying for it. I hate bodywork...

Anyhow, some pics....

Looking good, those old mopar's are a ball to work on aren't they, I have done a couple over the years, and my race car is getting to the point of a re-do and my tow vehicle is in dire need of some new sheet metal too, can't afford to replace them, so I will do what I gotta' do.

Yep, 6 way adjustable buckets, originally had a fold down "buddy seat" in the center, auto on column, this is what it looked like when I bought it, I just recovered everything in white...... 64,000 original miles.

It's getting painted Kustom shop "Deep Marine Blue" .015" metalflake over a medium blue base & will have White C stripes.

Yes, we got Scott's car to track twice before end of year, ran 10.41 @ 131. Trans/converter work great, if I recall it's flashing around 5200 behind the hemi. He broke the sure grip the 1st time @ track with it, so we put a spool in it & then 2nd he stripped the teeth off ring gear of converter when it kicked back trying to start it in 30 degree weather in the AM. Going to send verter back to PTC for new teeth & put a start retard on it, there is more left in car juts have to get some more passes on it. But yes very pleased with trans, was a great deal

& yes Dave my SBee has Lightning rods in it as well as my '68 Road Runner also....

Re: Update Pics on my SuperBee - 01/09/10 06:46 PM

Looks good Ryan! Sounds like you might be ready by summer. What tranny are you running (sorry if I missed previous discussion)? 1 pic looked like lenco but then Hurst was just mentioned (auto or manual)? You're using the hood springs with a steel hood that has a glassed on cowl scoop. I did the exact same thing on my dart. Even with careful attention when I closed the hood, the rear corners where the mud was applied develeped 1" stress cracks on each side. The paint job was flawless except for those 2 spots and it drove me nuts. Just thought I'd mention it so you can try something before the color gets slung.

I think best it ever ran with 4 speed was 11.80 @ 124

SuperBee has a 727, with Hurst Lightning Rods 3 speed shifter from early 70's in it.

They are on ebay all the time, just have to watch as the Hurst olds ones are FOUR SPEED auto sticks.... need to get a direct from Hurst 3 speed aftermarket setup for the 727/904. I've even seen a couple NOS new in box setups in last year. I think they sold in the $625 range, I paid $425 a pop for the 2 sets I have, both had Buy It Now options otherwise for how nice they were they probably would have went higher. My other set in the RR does not have the plastic cover for it...but it came with a reverse lockout option.

Engine in the car is not anywhere near a 505 BB LOL.

394" SB Based off an R3 9" deck block with a 3.58" SCAT Billet crank & a 4.185 bore.... W9 Raised Port heads....

I gave $125 for mine and thought I was crazy spending that much for a used shifter.

Considering I've had them for 25 years I guess the cost per year is pretty low now.

Mine have the reverse lockout.

No, This is my '68 RR clone that use for a daily driver (when weather cooperates) I drove this every day from mid April 2009- till early Novemeber & then put it in storage for winter, put almost 8000 miles on it in that time.... fuel milage is ridiculous, (3.91 gears, 4200 stall, & 550+HP & 3700 lbs aerodynamic as a barn door) & with estimated gas costs by Spring I will probably not drive it every day this year.... Gas is already $2.80 a gallon here in dead of winter, so by Summer I'm sure it will be $3.20-$3.50 or more.... It's just ridiculous to waste so much $ just to try to drive one of these things every day, I did it this year just to kind of shut some people up who talk about "street cars, & drivers" who never actually drive their cars on the street. Pay no attention to the 7.73 dial in, that was I think first day I had car to track this year with a 2000 stall mancini converter. It ended up running best of 11.24 @ 121 MPH with a 1.57 60'. Weighs 3700 exactly with me in it & the Hoosier Drag Radials/Alum drag wheels on it. I run it around most of time with a set of M/T Indy profiles & Matching Cragar S/S's on the back. Put 41 passes on it this Summer/fall, did'nt break anything all year & car has only let me sit once in 8000 miles, & that was thanks to a JUNK brand new MP fuel pump that failed in less than 100 miles. Other than that it has been a GREAT driver....Car handles great, runs cool, all lights work, idles @ 800 RPM, starts instantly, no matter what the weather like, turns heads wherever I take it, & is just overall just fun to drive..... I got screaming deal on car off of Ebay early in the year & then went through all the mechanical & did my own motor/trans/rear/electrical/brakes etc. I may sell it this year, not sure... don't have a huge attachment to it, just wanted to get a car to drive to tide me over till the S. Bee is done. If I do keep it, it's going to get new bumpers, body re-done in orange, new Black top & interior converted from current Gold to Black next Winter.....I will take the Bee to my grave with me... I have WAY too much $ in it to ever even contemplate selling it. I could never justify taking the loss on it, plus it has been built exactly how I wanted, there was no compromises made anywhere on it....It's pretty much my "dream car" There are few minor things I may change over time but overall it's darn close to exactly what I have always envisioned.... I also plan on driving the SuperBee at least once a week this year once it's done on nice days... It may not be as hard on fuel as the Big Block if I keep it out of boost? We'll see.

I still want to get my hands on a '70 Charger @ some point in future & do one in black & red, probably a Big Block driver type deal like the RR. Anyone reading this that has either a '68 or '70 Charger & may be interested in the '68 RR in some sort of a trade email me LOL.

My Dart has been sold, new owner has it @ a chassis shop somewhere I do believe. He is an aquaintence of one of my friends in State College, although I've never met the guy. Supposedly he has an injected Hemi of some sort for in it & is planning on doing some type of Nostalgia S/S type deal with it?? Dunno, don't really care. Never really had much of an attachment to that car as well... was just a cheap car I was able to afford to play with while in College. I get crap from some about it not being "anything special, or overly nice" But man I dunno how many 22/23 year olds have a 10 second street car while they are going to college... It was best I could do with what I had & I did everything on that car myself.... body, paint, mechanicals etc..It was a GREAT learning experience.... First 1/4 panels I ever put on were on that car.... Were they as nice as the job being done on my Bee? Hell no, but there is some satisfaction in doing things yourself as well...

But at this point in life, I don't have time or patience to try to build car of that caliber by myself, that's why I had Bob G. do the chassis & am having the body & paint done elsewhere.

I'll post a pic of my old Dart in a sec....

Going to the paint booth @ beginning of the week & will be in color by next weekend....

Following week, new top goes on, glass back in, C stripes on, & begin re-assembly

Went over & fired it up today for first time since drove it in body shop in late fall, got it prepped to load on trailer...

Looks really good, I'm very pleased W/ progress...

It should be done @ body shop all back together & ready to go to chassis shop to be aligned & scaled @ beginning of March.... Then back to my shop for some trans work & last minute race prep details & then should be ready for inspection & some Test & Tune....

There are couple interior pics on first 2 pages of this post. I don't have any new good interior pics since it has been covered up for last 5+ months... Whole car will need alot of cleaning once back from paint & we're done rubbing out paint.

Just ordered the remaining misc stuff to finish it up after it's back from paint... new top, C stripes, new chrome mirror, new door handles, new side marker bezels/lenses, all new clips for the front & rear window trim, hood/trunk bumpers/ weatherstrip, new windshield gasket, new sill plates etc.

Hey RJ, please dint take this the wrong way but your fuel reg and lines look scary close to the header, even with the exhaust wrap with the hood closed on a hot day cruising, that fuel set up is gona see a lot of heat, We have been doin turbo diesels in boats for 20 years and dry exhaust runs get unbelievably hot over time with a light load, Is there any way of movin that stuff to the back side of the fender?

It will be in the shop by next time you are here..... It's going to John Simbeck's shop to be scaled & aligned as soon as we get it re-assembled from paint & then from his place in Early March it's coming back to my shop for final finishing/race prep.

It went in paint booth last weekend & did'nt get finished, It's going back in this weekend, after plowing out commences... Maybe I'll get some pics of it in color next week? Dunno. I have only seen it through garage door window so far.... from what I saw I liked it, it was "sparkly".

It went from being called the "Joe Dirt" car out @ BGR, to now being called everything from a "bowling ball", to a "Dune Buggy", to a "bass boat" Apparently no one likes Metalflake but me...

I stopped by on Friday afternoon & saw it through dark window & was being wet sanded, by today I'm sure it's been buffed out. I'll stop tomorrow, & maybe get some pics if I can. I'm going to Vegas for a week on Tuesday, so hopefully while I'm gone the top will get installed, glass back in etc. So when I get back it might start to look like a car again.....

Re: Update Pics on my SuperBee - 03/24/10 11:43 PM

Well it's in color... for 2nd & final time (hopefully) Had a mixing issue on one of early coats of flake the first time it was shot & all had to be stripped & re-done.... but it's shot & looks good.

It's a Ford Metallic blue of some vintage (we'll try to keep that mum) & then 6 coats of clear with .015" Kustom shop "deep marine blue" flakes & then 6 coats of clear over that.... Came out nice, I told the painter, don't be shy with the flake, I don't think you could over-do it for my taste. I think he got good amount on it.....

The flake is really hard to see in the pics, my digital camera goes nuts trying to take pics of it, with the way the flake reflects light @ crazy angles, the camera does not know how to "absorb" it. So in most pics it just looks like a medium metallic blue, but when you see it in person, it really pops, depending on the angle of view & the lighting....

In garage under fluorescent lights, the flake does not stand out alot, unless viewed @ an extreme angle, but outside in natural light you noticed the flake at almost all angles except a few.... The sun had started to go down behind trees this eve. when I was there taking some pics, making it little darker looking.

I did take couple extreme close ups of the panels to show the flake density....

The new white top & glass should go back on next week sometime & stripes probably the following week. Decklid should be on tomorrow, & hood this weekend..... Dunno when I'll get airbrush artist up to do some airbrush work on side of the cowl, maybe in week or 2.

We still have to make new bumper brackets for rear bumper, the front fenders are not fully aligned yet, he's having heck of time getting them where he wants them... But finally starting to make some progress, now that the paint issues are resolved.....

When camera hits the flake it does what it did in this pic in middle of fender, it just shows up as a bright "glare spot" where as in person, you are seeing the flake glitter/sparkle like crazy in that area....

Re: Update Pics on my SuperBee - 03/24/10 11:59 PM

Last one... real close up head on shot of flake density.....

Next pics I post in few weeks, should be pretty much all back together with top on, stripes on, bumpers on, marker lights in, glass in etc..... I think it will look real sharp with all the "accent pieces" in place.... right now it's just alot of blue & some missing parts... but when it's all done I think it will really look sharp.

I told my painter that I now want to do my '68 Road Runner in gold metal flake this winter... & we may go to the jumbo stuff for it, since it has Cragar S/S on it & it's much more of a real "retro looking" 1970's Muscle Car.... I think the .025" Gold flake will look right @ home on it. He's just thrilled with idea of shooting more flake LOL He bought TWO Sata paint guns to do this car.....

Re: Update Pics on my SuperBee - 03/28/10 03:23 AM

Decklid went on today, hood went on.... some marker lights, & I pulled the tranny out tonight & shifter for some mods...

Made mistake of going to track with buddy today for 1st T&T of the year & got the "itch" again, so now feel motivated again to get car finished... The grille/bumper etc should go on tomorrow....Gotta get trans torn apart & change all sealing rings & lip seals, I seem to have an internal leak somewhere...

Paid Beaver Bob for reserved pit spot for the year, so told him now that I have paid reserved pit spot I guess I better get my junk finished up.... I gotta stop back by bodyshop tomorrow afternoon to pick up the trans, & I'll try to get couple pics with the hood on, I had'nt seen car with the cowl on it in 3 years...... forgot what it looked like.

Oh & also I will say the absolute BEST thing about a turbo car like this....... pulling tranny out is a BREEEEZE. I just did Buddies '72 Challenger 727 with TTI's last week, & it SUCKED... even though was 2nd or 3rd time I've had to pull it.... This Superbee is 1 man, 20 minute operation, everything is so easy to get to with any wrench you need... I hate having to pull it for umpteenth time, especially for car that has never driven down road or track yet, but at least it is just dead simple.

Re: Update Pics on my SuperBee - 03/30/10 12:12 AM

ALL RIGHT.. now you gotta Mod Top it...!!!!

i like the flake..wait till you pull in the lanes at dusk...the lights will hit it just right and it will pop...

did you paint the exhaust wrap?..its hard to tell..?
after a few times re-wrapping my pipes...the last time..i got 4 cans of VHT heat wrap paint and soaked the hell out of the fabric wrap on the pipes..
its been clean...sheds oil and doenst frey anywhere near as easy.and i dont get the damn itchey forarms after changing the plugs..
it doesnt soak up water as easy either..so you dont have a steam sauna going on for an hour after getting up to temp...
it took a bunch of cans/coats..as it soaks in alot..
but its like a coating now..and just stays better looking...

Oh...and Black Bear..dont bother with the meat..
trust me..it tast's like coal tar...and looks like a boot heal pulled out of a diesel drain pan..
greasy and leathery..impossible to chew
makes chewing beef jerkey, chew like its filet mignon

car looks killer..
first pass you gonna have metal flake everywhere..its hard to get rid of...takes a few passes...Expect it everywhere...
cheapst

i like the gold..this is Inca gold flake.

I'll be back @ BSD Sunday doing maintenance on my Buddies '72 Challenger & supposedly Buck, the guy who did the body/paint on the S.Bee is bringing his '72 Camaro as well.

We ran the Challenger last week in Modified, lost 2nd round & had some teething issues... Fuel pressure decided to spike for some reason in 1st round of elims & smoked like a Diesel.

Just few little things left to do now....

Put new steering wheel on, wire up line lock, plumb new carb to turbo/reroute to clear hood/scoop, install trim panel, & all new bulbs, & little bit of wiring to work on under the dash....

It should be going to John Simbeck's shop for alignment & scaling @ beginning of week. If all goes well MAYBE test & tune next weekend, but doubtful with my schedule.

Re: Update Pics on my SuperBee - 05/04/10 01:33 AM

It's just a basic BGR ladder bar/mini tub job. QA1's on all 4 corners. Strange S60 rear, 3.73:1 spool, Strange discs... Denny's Nitrous 1350 series shaft & billet MW yoke...

Only thing I "chinced" out on that I wish I had done different was the 35 spline axles, wish I had spent the extra $ for the 40 splines, but @ time I was ordering rear couple years ago I was broke so... it got 35's. Should be fine, but one of those things that will be in back of my mind with such a heavy car.

Re: Update Pics on my SuperBee - 07/11/10 08:47 PM

Sorry, just got back from Carlisle.... been there for 3 days buying Hemi parts of all things (don't ask)

I have motor out of Bee for "some" changes, been waiting forever for some parts but finally have just about everything & should be going together this week. Hope to dyno next week, probably late in week... have 5 different intakes I want to try, so I have to get them all cut this week to fit.

Made some pretty significant changes to motor to put some more bottom end in it off boost & make it a lower RPM piece.

So that's where I'm at... going to dyno motor one day NA, & play with intakes etc & then put turbo plumbing on second day. Also gotta get my carb back from Pro Systems as it was all messed up right out of box from Patrick. Dunno what was wrong with it, but we could not even get it to make a dyno pull under load on a NA motor couple weeks ago, I knew it ran like crap on the car & the dyno confirmed it has issues.

Just have not had alot of time to mess with it lately but will get back on motor now that Carlisle is over.
