Don't know what to think of this post on craigslist. I think this belongs here more than in the craigslist forum. If a mod wants to move it there, let me know and I'll remove the craigslist link and just put all the pics up (saved them on my comp.)....

I raced there in 1968 and I don't think that's Wentzville.

Looks a little different. But that is wentzville. I really miss that place. It closed in 2005.

Looks like MAR to me that hillside and that parking area was road course .
They were closed for about 10 years reopened in 1980,81 .First week i was married 1982 car caught fire going down track .
Always been rumors another track opening up in that area .

I wish someone would open up one again in that area, or further west, even. It's was only 70 miles from home instead of 140 to GIR or KCIR. Raced at MAR weekly in early 90's.

That's DEFINITELY MAR/Wentzville. Amazing how many guys/cars in the background are still racing today.

The track actually only closed from '78-'80 and from '82-'83. Other than that, It was open from '64 thorugh '04.

Was it maybe '83-'84?

The '78-'80 I'm positive about, though. I was the starter there in '80 when it reopened.

There is talk of a track being built in columbia. I dont know if its true or not. Strokerpost needs to build a track in Troy. What do you think Ken?

Not in Columbia...that's where I am. There was "talk" about it in the county north of us, and alot of plans in the works, but when the economy turned sour, I believe so did the plans. Last I heard the property was never purchased, and developers could not find investors...again, just what I heard. Columbia would be a great place, IMO, because it is right in the middle of the state, could draw from all over, and is right on I70, and Hwy63. However, Boone County and City of Columbia has no desire for such a facility. If it doesn't have a ball involved, it is not a sport, apparently.

Yeah, Don, that was '82 I rememeber the car fire and the fiasco with fire extinguishers that day. Back in the days of Bob and Lonnie running the track before the Veighes decided to do it themselves. Rememeber the clashes between the big block and small block Pro Stock Monzas?

Every one of these track rumors has been laid to rest years ago.

There was a huge reason Pevely never ran again after the Junior race in June of '93. If you've been there since, you'd know what it is!

It sounded like the most likely spot was gonna be in Montgomery City. But then the circle track was just closed one weekend. I had a friend that ran there and said it just up and closed after a few weeks of bad payouts.

His link is to a place that sells properties but don't understand why he put those pictures up.

That flood just moved the timetable up a little. I spent many weekends running Sat night at the old Gateway (the swamp) then spend the night at Pevely's front gate and they would let us in early in the morning.

Your paid admission WAS tech. 1st car in line in the right hand staging lane got the bye run. The "sand trap" was well used. I had a lot of fun there, but looking back it's a wonder none of us were killed......

Sorry Charlie, not me, that must be some REALLY old guy.

Man I do miss that place. If they hadnt closed up I MAY have kept my car a while longer. Lotta great times spent there. Went by it the other day....just homes and home sites now.

I never raced at Peavley. I Had a lot of fun there as a kid watching my dad race. It looks like nothing close is goin to open around here. Oh well.

Actually, Pevely was longer (2000 feet) than any of the nine other eighth-mile tracks in the area with the exception of Pacific (2300 feet). That's not to say we didn't see several cars on the other side of Herkie-Hornine Road but the shutdown wasn't overly short.

The reason Pevely never ran after the '93 Junior event is because the flood washed out all the base gravel and the place was too wavy for even Juniors to run. The track flooded every year but the "Great Flood" had a massive current.

Almost a dozen years ago, the SLKRA built a kart racing course in the shutdown area. Nothing could have ever been done with the track after '93, though.

Cool pics Don, thanks for putting them up. It looks just like i remember it. Every time i make the long haul to sikeston i see it, and wish it was still open. Now i know why it is not. Im looking forward to a good year of racing at gateway. I just wish there was something a little closer to go to when their not racing.
