Questions about a Lunati .480 Cam? - 12/24/09 01:53 AM

Can anyone tell me anything good or bad about this cam? It is a 230 in. 230 ex. at .050 adertised duration is 292in 292 ex. It is a.480 in..480 ex. with 1.5 rockers. It is in a stock bore 340 with stock pistons. The rotating assemblie look to be balanced. I bought this motor about 5 years ago with my 70 Cuda and never look at it untill tonight. I might pull the 318 out of my blue cuda and put it in. I am not looking to go racing with it but would like it to run and sound better than it does with the 318.

I've got the same grind in my 340. No complaints. My dart has run 12.28 @ 107 with it.

I ran that cam years ago in a mild 360 and it was ok but ran out of steam at 5500+ rpms and ran low 13`s high 12`s if I remember correctly.

If it would run that good in my Barracuda that would be good. If I use 70 exhaust manifolds would the hurt it a lot? I know header would be better but I have the manifolds and would like to keep the cost down and keep the stock look. Even if it is the 70 look.

I can`t leave well enuff alone so I`ve never ran manifolds but I would think it would be OK but obviously headers would free up some power.

Buddy of mine ran a cam very similar to that (289 gross, 228 @ .050; .480" lift ground on 108) in a '73 340. Stock convertor and 3.23 or 3.21 (suffering from CRS at the moment). Shortblock and heads were stock.

First he ran w/ generic/cheapo headers, Torker 340 and 600 Holley. Then went to stock TQ intake and picked up a bunch of low end. Sounded good, and drove nice on the street.

Then he got tired of the header hassles and put the stock manifolds back on. Hopped himself out of most of the power gained. BIG difference.

FWIW, I bought the cam/lifters when he screwed up his 340's lower end. Put it in a '72 318 with small chamber 273 heads, stock dual plane w/ 625 AFB, and generic/cheapo headers. Had it in a '66 Belvedere. Ran pretty good running for what it was.

Then the car got hit and the motor went in a '74 Dart, with manifolds and single exhaust. What a dog.

Short story long: I wouldn't bother with an aftermarket cam in a small block with exhaust manifolds unless I was going for some kind of F.A.S.T. deal or something. Leaves too much on the table.

Are the 70 manifolds a little better than the 73? Header are not out of the question. If you were going to get a set of headers whats the best bang for the buck?

Here is a video of that cam in my dad's 440. No 1/4 mile times, but it's a great street cam and was one of the cheapest when we bought it
