Got it torn down

Got it torn down - 12/16/09 04:09 PM

And learned a few things in the process. Scott took a more accurate measurement and found my pistons were actually .102 in the hole. He then recalculated my CR and came up with an honest 8.6 to 1.

As it turns out, the previous shop did not put 6pk rods in. They are LY rods.

He then took a look at where my cam was installed. It was in at 109.5. The timing chain was way loose

I'm gonna have to take a look at the other 440 block that I got as he wasn't to thrilled with the idea of the 4 sleeves in mine. Hopefully it's at the standard bore. For all I know it may even have a forged crank.

I won't get a chance to look at it till tomorrw after noon though.

6pack rods are heavy anyway.....

Now that it is apart, you have a lot of options.

I have a sneekin' suspision, it won't go back together with LY rods either.

Has he told you something he's not telling me

So far all that's been discussed is some machining to up the CR and working the heads and intake.

Nope, just a guess.

3 points of compression should do it some good.

Just tell Scott you want to go 8s and let him figure it out. No better time than the present.

Re: Got it torn down - 12/16/09 05:14 PM

I have not had good luck with teardowns either, they always went togeather built for more HP and always cost more $$. I am sure Scott will get you the most bang for bank! He is looking to help me get in to the 8s as well.

Re: Got it torn down - 12/16/09 06:21 PM

8.6 to 1 CR, 4 sleeves, loose chain, LY rods = 600 HP!!! Man, Scotts gonna get you over 700 HP when hes done i bet! seriously, imho, you are at the limit for those LYs. Time for some H beams.

Re: Got it torn down - 12/16/09 06:48 PM

4 sleeves is no big deal, You just need some Hemi length rods.

Re: Got it torn down - 12/16/09 08:23 PM

I always thought sleeves were stronger than an original cylinder wall? I read somewhere that guys would take an engine, sleeve all 8 holes, and use it for a race motor...apparently there was also some questions to the legality of this...I don't remember the details though...maybe they were sleeving a 400 down to a 383? or...

Re: Got it torn down - 12/16/09 08:24 PM

My old R1 block had 5 sleeves in it so the sleeves are no big thing as long as they dont leak

Re: Got it torn down - 12/16/09 08:48 PM

IMO, the sleeves are a good thing, as long as they were done right. And the motor was working just fine. For what you are going to do, replacing the connecting rods with some aftermarket ones is the right thing to do. Even some $400 H-beams are much better than the old LY rods you have.

A magnaflux crack inspection of the crank is in order after previous racing and a tear down.

My motor has 8 sleeves that came in it from the factory.

Re: Got it torn down - 12/16/09 09:22 PM

I would start looking for a dana now, once this engine is done w/ more comp. that means more torque, then your 8 3/4 days are numbered especially with a trans brake. my

Re: Got it torn down - 12/16/09 10:36 PM

on the sleeve-ing deal..
no doubt its a better cyl to make the rings seal.
i understand on certain blocks webbing design..sleeving all 8 cyl can cause a weak spot in the main web.....main caps..fwiw..

Re: Got it torn down - 12/17/09 03:55 AM

I talked with Scott tonight and got some clarification. It's not that the block has sleeves, it's more about the quality of them and how they were installed.

I also took a minute and went out and did a rough mic of the bores on the other 440 block that I have. It's at 4.319 give or take. I still want to get it in the air to take a look to see if it might have a forged crank.

Gonna have to clean the garage befor I can lift it though

Does it still have the balancer on it? If it does, it should be a thin balancer if it's forged. No counterweights on it. If not, look at the back of the crank. Is there a bore for a pilot bushing? Cast 440 cranks don't have one. At least none of the ones I've looked at have had one. Which really sucks cause my truck is a 4 spd. Now I've got to tear down my '71 440 just so I can get the crankshaft out of it.

Re: Got it torn down - 12/17/09 12:45 PM

I believe pics of the various BB balancers are in the Tech Archives.
Posted By: WILD BILL

Re: Got it torn down - 12/17/09 01:07 PM

No balancer on it at all.

Basically all that is there is the block, crank, and rods and pistons.

Scott showed how to tell the difference between them so I'll take a look tonight.

I got a chance to look further into that other 440 block this evening.

Looks like a forged crank to me

It's a 72 block that appears to be a standard bore as well. I can't tell for sure but it doesn't look like it has any sleeves in it.

I sprayed a little penatrating oil in the bores and it rolled over quite nicley.

I'm thinking it's well worth the $100 I gave for it.

I'll say!

the 440 block I have I paid $100 for, and it's just a bare block, .040 over, with a ring gouge in 1 cylinder.

not that I'm complaining, I still think $100 for that block is a fair price--if the ring gouge doesnt' come out with a hone job, then I always have the option of a sleeve, or take all 8 to .060
