Header Collector Help - 12/14/09 06:20 PM

With all the options avaliable for header collectors I'm still undecided. I'm updating a set of Hooker Super Comp headers w/new collectors. At first merge collectors seemed the way to go, but then I get to thinking about the 4-2-1 scavenger collectors. The only problem is they have smaller final tubes(2 1/2 or 2 3/4) I'm thinking I can put a reverse cone at the end of the 2 3/4 scav. collector and make that work, but I don't know where to put the crank case evac tube(3 or 4 in. back?) Do the scavenger collectors (4-2-1) work that much better?

Don't see any on race cars. You see a lot of merges, though.

I would go with the merge. Look on E-bay. I picked up these stainless ones for $75.

Re: Header Collector Help - 12/15/09 07:30 PM

Scott Koffel said pretty much the same thing as HEMIFRED when I talked to him about the headers I need to build for my new B1 heads. Unless you can get a killer deal somewhere or you really need every last HP the merge collectors just aren't worth the money. I'm running Super Gas and brackets and my new combo should be around 1000 HP so that theory works for me.

BTW, I've run the 4-2-1 Scavenger collectors from Flowmaster on my car for the last 15 years or so. I've always felt they didn't come close to the HP increase Flowmaster claimed. I have no intention of using them on my new setup.

Re: Header Collector Help - 12/16/09 01:57 AM

Thanks for all the responses. Welding a cone in the headers is an old trick worth a few extra HP. It's a lot of trouble for a few hp, but I want to get rid of those flanges that keep catching on my trailer too. One website not mentioned above is ssheaders.com, they have a decent tech article on headers. Sorry about the hit n run post; working lots of hours.

If you have a Racer's discount with Summit you can get the Hooker Super Comp. merge collectors for $165 a pair. Never had experience with them so I can't say if they actually do their job as advertised.

all are very expensive and IMHO not worth it for the average racer or bracket car

I agree completely. These are only for max effort, cost is no object efforts like Prostock, Comp eliminator, and SS/AH. But a few of these sites do have some interesting info on the subject of headers and collectors.

Re: Header Collector Help - 12/16/09 01:34 PM

Most all over the counter headers are designed for
a street version engines, the primary tubes are long
and the collectors are way too short and usually too
small in diameter. A set of headers needs to be designed
for the engine... primary tube diameter, length and
collector diameter and length. A merge collector isnt
a one size fits all, cone shape and length mean ALOT.
Also if you run a exhaust, the extension pipe going
to the muffler is part of the collector(any length
before a expansion area)... collectors go in length
of multiples for tuning... if 18" is the best, then
36" is the next tuning length(sound wave)

Collector kits start at $115 in MS and $150 in SS - that's for 2 collectors including your choice of transition cones.

Wow....glad I revisited this post, and welcome to Moparts. I'm on a tight budget, but I don't mind a little fab work and your prices sound good. I'll visit your web site and most likely give you a call when time permits.

Re: Header Collector Help - 12/17/09 02:41 AM

i'm using the el cheapo hooker merge collectors. don't know if theres any gains in hp but it's sure easy yo install & remove the tubes if i need to do do any work. i've recycled the collector onto my second set of headers so they're handy to have.

plus a week of welding.

bet there's not enough increase to warrant cost and assembly time for 99.9% of racers here because the rest of the head is not tuned for optium results

There are some serious racers on this board. Maybe 99.5% would be more accurate?

Everyone has their own cost threshold. In our testing we have found that if your headers are absolutely perfectly made to your application then the effect of a merge collector is very small.

Unfortunately I have not seen very many "perfect headers". There are usually a few, or even many compromises that have to be made just to get them to fit into the car and miss all the moving parts! In those cases, merge collectors do have a noticeable impact.

Another consideration is whether the collector can make your header build simpler to build by offering better fitment. Like that time I bought a "one size fits all" seatcover guaranteed to fit everything from a Ferrari bucket seat to a Rambler bench seat. It fit, but they should have included extra blades for my box cutter to cut it down to size! Lesson learned, beer and late night TV don't mix!

We are with cone!

Thought I'd share pics of the finished(almost) product. Total cost of metal was $42, plus 6 hrs of my labor.
