Survey, HEI post Mopar caps what colors should we do? - 11/20/09 06:55 PM

Hello, we are at the point of mass producing our HEI post Mopar caps. They will fit original Mopar distributors and our new line of billet distributors. Do you guys think the tan will be popular? Red, black? Thanks ..

For that OEM look, black and tan. For that "racey" look, red. Since your billet distributors don't look too OEM, You will probably sell more red ones with that distributor. Can they "fight" as good as they look?

Ya... I'm thinkin' black cap and wires also. MSD pretty nuch has the "red cap" market cornered with color recognition. And yes, I know they offer black caps.

We had them tested by a very notable distributor and ignition shop. Rock steady with zero retard to 8800 rpm. Thats why we built it overkill !!

Did they divulge what known aftermarkets usually are? variance wise?

4-8 degree's over 6500 rpm. The testor immediately wanted to order and wants to be a dealer.

Rich,
Please don't take this as disrespect or anything negative to your product. I find it VERY hard to believe that MSD,mallory, and whoever else produces distributors would allow that much of a fluctuation, I guess i would really have to see it to believe it.

These numbers were given to me to incude all manufacture variables. There are over a dozen manufactures making distributors for our big blocks. You obviously see them on Ebay, but like everything else, you get what you pay for. I will not name manufacture names. I can only tell you the specs on ours.

I know what you are saying, and I am not here to smear other companies.

We have to make a minimum of 500 of a color. I am trying to make 100 clear as well. Looks like Black and tan. Sounds good. Maybe red if we get enough initially sold.

Im not trying to discredit your product at all and give you big props for backing a product like that, especially in these times. I just want to know that it does what you say it does and that it truely works better then the competition

Sorry everybody. Thanks for all of the orders, but these are only in the test and dyno phase. It'll take 90 days after final QC and approval until we can deliver. We wil be releasing the caps at the same time the distributors are ready. We have a vaccuum advance ready-to-run(no ignition box needed), and mechanical advance for B and RB's only for now. LA will be next year. However, our CD coils are ready for delivery.

I am using the Magnum cap adapter from RobbMc on my BB race engine. Last I heard, these are no longer available. The Magnum caps I have been buying are black, so I think if you sell the tan ones, that will help you find a market niche and I would use them on my street 440 car.

"everyone" does black or tan for Mopar - red for chevy and of course blue for ford. If you are making a special distributor it should have a special cap. therefore I vote for Plum Crazy Purple (not some pastel cheap looking purple, but a deep rich crazy purple - you know - like your car Rick!). Then there would be possible to immediately identify the car as using FireCore products. Be a leader not a follower!

On the average, you are looking at 1 degree of retard for every 1000 rpm over 4000 rpm for all ECU's I've tested. I have never seen one that didn't retard at least 2 degrees at 6500 rpm or more - over 4K. BTW, that's not necessarily a bad thing - and often a plus. Why do you think advance curves usually stop at around 2800 rpm?

Re: Survey, HEI post Mopar caps what colors should we do? - 11/24/09 04:17 AM

At first blush, I thought "black" ... but let's talk about clear. Is there any performance disadvantage to clear? It would be really nice to be able to check the rotor phasing with a timing light and a clear cap. If we move to HEI style female-end wires on the distributor cap side, and the caps are black, we would need two caps ... one with the hole in it to check rotor phasing and one for normal duty. A clear cap would solve the two cap dilemma. And I suppose you could see the carbon tracks as they build up on a clear cap. I'm on the fence ... what are the technical arguments?

BTW - the Robb/MC adapter is gone ... I tried to order one and Robb canceled the order and told me to search on "firecore" .. nice guy that Robb!
