Anyone here using a Stacker Trailer?

Anyone here using a Stacker Trailer? - 11/11/09 05:55 AM

Like it says in the title. Is anyone here towing a stacker? If so what brand and length, and what are you towing it with. We are looking at maybe buying a stacker in the not to distant future, any pros and cons? Any input is appreciated.

Stay away from the Renegade brand. I work on primally race trailers. I see alot of the Renegade trailers broken do to lack of quality and not built strong enough, the featherlite seems to be good quality usually only replace worn out tires or brakes.

Re: Anyone here using a Stacker Trailer? - 11/11/09 11:47 AM

There are two types of trailers called "stackers"; those that lift the car once the car is inside the trailer and (2) those that lift the car using the rear door.

In terms of longivity, the type with the lift door are the best but also the most expensive and require the most maintenance. Why? The design requires the "second" floor where the cars ride to be a structural floor, this makes the trailer to be far more rigid. The rear door is either hydraulic or screw type lift----both types require maintenance(cleaning/greasing) on a periodic basis. This type of trailer is usually heavier, requires more tractor to pull/stop, etc.

The trailer that lifts the car once inside the trailer is really nothing more than a tall "regular" trailer with a lift insalled inside----often nothing more that a commercial four post lift. They are far cheaper to buy, are much lighter in weight but also are not nearly as strong. We have followed many of these trailers on the road and watched the trailer flex with every bump. Even though the trailers are tall, most can be towed with a heavy one ton dually safely. As a point of comparison, most Renegades are this type of trailer.

We own neither type of trailer---although we saw both types at every race we ran in our former life as dirt late model racers---and know plenty of owners. The trailer we own is a 5150, built by a local company----their web site is www.5150racetrailers.com. They are very strong in dirt late models, tractor pullers and just beginning to get into drag racing----they have supplied the Pedegron brothers and have Ron Capps under construction now. I like them for their appearance and custom extruded trim----they also custom build each trailer on a jig plate.

My buddy used to have one.Hiw was gigantic. He was towing with a 3500 Ram and it looked like a tinker toy when it was hooke up.He liked the way it towed but went with a totter.Rocky

Too much frontal surface area for me... too much
drag (wind resistance and kills the MPG)

Re: Anyone here using a Stacker Trailer? - 11/11/09 02:50 PM

When you get into the tall trailers, oftentimes the one ton trucks suffer fuel mileagewise, 6-7 MPG becomes common. We went on a 940 mile trip recently with our Freightliner 70 "Toter" pulling a loaded 36" gooseneck(11'6" tall) and averaged 11.3 MPG. The "Toters" just get better mileage pulling the tall trailers.

Re: Anyone here using a Stacker Trailer? - 11/11/09 04:37 PM

Seems like I find more things to say----There are two basic way that trailers are assembled:

1. The base is welded together, then the sides and roof are usually riveted to the base. Using this method, all the stresses are on the base and the sides aren't really "load bearing". This requires a much heavier base frame---more weight.

2. The base and sides are "load bearing" and are welded as a unit. The top is usually welded on as a unit as well. This results in a lighter trailer with the same load bearing strength. It also produces less flex going down the highway.

Al - a few things:

1) Happy Birthday
2) Two cars to the track at the same time? Hmmm...
3) If Mazzolini has one for sale - I'm in riverside right now and can swing by and take a look at it.

Let me know.

Just remeber you will have to plan you're trip well, as alot of older under passes wont fit a stacker trailer.

Re: Anyone here using a Stacker Trailer? - 11/12/09 03:55 AM

I had a classic 40ft gooseneck and a 32ft tag both were too short and I had issues with getting two cars in it so that I felt comfortable measure your two cars and make sure the height is enough before buying NOT ALL STACKERS HAVE THE SAME INSIDE HEIGHT make sure it will work for you and get heavy duty axles and wheels/tire at least 17in I had alot of tire issues as well

Bob Mazzolini does have a stacker and its really nice. I think its a T&E trailer. He used to have a Goldrush and that was really nice as well. Bob pulls his stacker with a Freightliner motorcoach. Its awesome! I like it better than his diesel pusher motorhome that he had. I do believe that his motorhome/Freightliner and stacker are for sale. He says he is too old and the whole setup was too much work for him by himself. His setup is VERY nice.

Re: Anyone here using a Stacker Trailer? - 11/12/09 05:34 AM

We have a Renegade Toter and a Renegade stacker, that will haul 3 cars. One on top of the cabinets, one on the lift and one under. The truck and trailer are FRP construction and never had any problems with either. I have raced out of both a "liftgate" trailer, like the pros use and also the above stacker with lift. For my money, I would rather have the trailer with the lift any time. Yes, you have to unload what is under the lift to get the car out, but the lift is the most handy thing in the world.

This unit is a 22' wedge front stacker with a Gemini 4000# lift system on a Cyclone platform. Outfitted with options, this unit sells for $28700.

Re: Anyone here using a Stacker Trailer? - 11/12/09 03:10 PM

MaxWedge, Nice looking trailer. I am looking for a 22' or so trailer. I really want to have enough room to haul two door cars, if the golf cart can make it that is a plus but not necessary as I can go back to the scooters to. I dont need a slant nose however as there will be no real advantage with my tow rig.

Al - let me know if you want me to swing by Mazzolini's and take a look at his rig. I can take cell phone pics and send them to you.

With that shortish looking tongue I would think you would want that slope nose for cornering and backing?

When you go to a flat front, the tongue will be longer to accommodate for turning.

325 hp Cat. It could definitely stand more oats, runs 75mph flat out, but does a good job.
