71 B-Body for drag cars - 12/17/06 07:40 PM

Don't see many 71 b-body drag cars - too heavy?

Looking to build a 12 sec street/strip Hemi car - is it worth the trouble, or is alot easier with an A body?

they're a little on the heavy side, but 12s shouldn't be a problem.it would be easier with an A body, but the B body will accept the hemi with less work.

They are a bit heavy for serious drag work, but a 12 second 71 b-body is very easy to do.

Getting one to run 12's is no problem in street trim. A guy that comes to my track has his 71 Charger in the mid 9's with a 446, stage 6 heads and a 100 shot of spray; you can take a lot of unnecessary weight out of them.

My 4000 lb street/strip Bee hit an 11.97 @ 114 this fall at Lebanon Valley. I drive it there, unpack and race. I drive it about 3000 miles a year. A ported iron headed, solid cam, six pack with nothing too elaborate under the hood.

yeah, they are a bit heavy but really build speed on the other end. very stable at high speeds. you can tuck a large tire under the factory tub. real easy to get to hook up. i ran a few years in mine with a basic 318 and a 150 shot of nos with full interior trim and all steel, 904 trans.,leafs,3.91 8 3/4. it ran 11.60's all day long. now i run it with a big block and nos but with the same weight{actually a bit heavier) and runs low 9's. love that body style.

Cant see why you cant get to 10's all day with street trim ... I would say its more interesting that way , maybe 9's ...

Yep with the nascar design rear fenders flare out rear tub is about 15 inch so cutting the wheel lip and right back space you can get a 14x32 in there it will be tight tho. And becuz the car being just a bit wider like 66-70 b-body rear ends just bolt right in

Anybody can make a light car go fast , It`s the challenge of a heavy car that is the fun part that and a slight prejudice for 71`s on my end

I think most people will be suprised to see a full size all steel (-hood) car going 8's. I can't wait for it!

I've joked around with my Dad many times about selling my Dart Sport and dumping all the money into his 71 B5 Roadrunner, it would be a neat project since it is completely torn apart right now. I think it will happen someday.

I really felt bad for you, having to sell it. I even felt worse I couldn't keep it in "the family" as well.. I was looking in old posts and found this. I love these old warhorses. Wish I could find one I could strip out and throw the Hemi in. Run some 9's in a 2900 lb B body..

I've got one that weighs less than that we could throw your hemi in.
