How far should I go with the new heads/cam on my 512? - 10/19/09 06:09 PM
I've been running stock eddy heads and a hydraulic cam on my 512 for over a year now, puts out 540 hp and 612 fpt. This is with a 8 3/4 rear and 3.55 gears. I can run high 11s.
This morning I dropped the car off at the shop for the winter project work. Included in this, along with a lot of chassis stiffening and a Dana 60 w/4.10s, is a Gear Vendors overdrive for the 727.
Since this is a street/strip car I am wondering when it comes along to the heads, intake, cam and torque converter swap (in April or so), how agressive I should go? I'm going with Indy heads and intake, plus a Comp solid roller cam and likely a 9.5" torque converter. To keep it streetable, I''d think the compression should be at 11:1, no?
Anyway, it's nothing to add a 100 horses under this scenario, but functionally speaking why shouldn't I be more agressive with my cam choice since for regular cruising I'll have the OD? What's the downside to going to 700hp+ vs an easy 650hp? At the track the upside is FUN (little downside), but on the street I'm not so sure --sorry, no experience with 700hp street cars . Gas milage is not really a concern here. I think the OD will mitigate a lot of the negatives on street if I were to go more agressive.
Opinions? Ideas? Suggestions?
Thanks.
