500 ci. - 10/01/09 07:39 PM

Hey Fellows.... this is my 1st post here. great site! I have a question for the 500ci guys. I'm taking our new motor to the track for the 1st time tomorrow night. This is our 1st 500, always ran 440's. Question is... what rpm should I look to shift this thing? It's a 4.15 stroked 440+.03, roughly 12.7:1 comp., .690 comp roller 286@ .050 dur., indy ez's flow 330in 230ex, 3400 lb cuda 5000 converter. thanks

start at 6500 and go up from there

That whole setup sounds real close to mine. I shift mine at 6800, but to be honest I hadn't tried many other shift points.

first of all- greetings and salutations. that combo should go perty good. a lot o' duration. maybe start at 7000 and experiment from there? you could prolly shift at 6500 and go as fast- you'll know after experimentation. hopefully we'll get the experts to chime in?

Sounds similar to my combo except I have a little more compression. I shift mine at 6700 so you should start around 6400 and go up 500 from there on every run until you find what it likes

I got nothing to add but

Max Wedge port size or standard port size? 1000 rpm difference between the torque curves depending on port size.

That is a ton of duration on the camshaft. My 505 motor made over 800 hp running only 266 at 050 duration on the intake side. Not sure what it would've done with another 20 degrees, never tried that much before.

indy ez's flow 330in 230ex,

It might like higher, but I would start at 6500 and work up; due to the head flow. If they flowed more, then 7000 may be closer to ideal. That cam should support even higher, but as I said... head flow at that CID.

500ci with very similar cam and comp. as you except 440-1s @ about 360cfm, with a 9375.

Best runs were 7000 on the 1-2, 7200 on the 2-3 and cross 72-7300.

Just wanted to say "Hi" Jack as I work with your dad. I started a month ago and I am working right next to him. I have known your dad for at least 6 years as I met him at the local cruise nights. I used to have a Dart but now have this red 63. I saw the new eng when he was putting it together in the shop. Looks like a very strong setup. Your dad is about the nicest guy I have known and I couldn't have asked to work next to a nicer guy. I hear you will be going to Capital and I wish you guys the best of luck tomorrow. Ron

thanks Ron... My dad is my best bud. a wealth of knowledge when it comes to mopar. he worked on these things when they were new. Are you going to the nosalgia drags next week at capitol? if so, we need to get a spot in the pits together.

to answer Barnstormer: the car has a single 1050 dominator, 2" primary headers and 4:88 dana. max-wedge ports on the indy's.

Plenty of carb, header and gear, converter. You might take it over 7000 if you like your valvetrain. Typical first time out, see what it likes for jet, traction etc. Nice combo..let us know.

Re: 500 ci. - 10/03/09 01:31 PM

well... another one of thoses nights at the track when you tell yourself i should've stayed home..... 1st we had to fix a trans cooler leak that decided to start when we got the track and not at home. Then I took our 1st pass and the car felt very flat. ended up running an 11.04 but, I shifted it a low 6000 rpm due to it being a brand new motor with no runs. Just wanted to give a little break in. Anyways... got her back to the pits and noticed that the volt meter read only 10 volts. Turns out I had one of the alternator wires pop off. probaly when I was in the water box. So, we fixed that up and headed back to the staging lanes only to watch a mustang oil the whole track down.... Sat waitng another 45 mins. for track clean-up only to be greeted with mother nature's rain.. loaded her up and went home. UUGGGHHHH!

Don't worry...you'll get all the bugs out of her. Better off finding them now then during eliminations at some time down the road....

Welcome to the board. Your engine should make peak power 7000-7200 RPM atleast all the 500CI engines we do with Indy Heads and a solid roller end up at. Shift it 7200 ish and cross the strip 7800 for the best ET. The converter is tighter than I would like but its a start.

Sorry to hijack the thread, just wondered Pete if a motor shifting that high would require an external oiling system.
