Help me to the 10s

Help me to the 10s - 09/30/09 05:21 PM

Wondering what it would take to get my pig into the 10s.

Combo is a 3800lb 72 B-body, 448 10.5 to 1 comp, ported 452s, (no flow numbers but Id bet they are around 260@.600) M1 w/2 inch open spacer, 2 inch hookers, cam is a Comp solid TL288, 259/259 .550 lift, .585 with the 1.58 rockers Im using, 108CL, in at 101.5. 950HP, running on E85. Converter flashed right at 5k, maybe more like 4900. 4.30 gear with 275/60/15 ET radials.

So far my best ET/MPH is in my sig. I know its got more in it as it sits with more tuning. But, lets assume that my sig performance is as good as it gets.

IM using 3 inch into Eddy RPM mufflers into 2.5 tailpipes, no X or H pipe. Im thinking with the cam specs, lack of crossover, and the 2.5 tailpipes I might see .1 or more with the pipes open.

Ive got a comp 266,.646 roller that I could swap in, not sure if 266 will be OK with only 10.5 compression?? Ive also got a Meziere water pump to throw on also.

I converted the car to E85 over last winter. I dont have any 1/4 mile passes since converting, but I took it to an 1/8 mile track early this summer. FWIW, the numbers converted to a 11.34@ 118.25 My best 1/4 numbers were in 600DA air and the 1/8 mile passes were in 2600DA air, so I hope to pick up there also.

Any ideas?

Von, if your running a belt driven water pump and you convert to the electric it will pick up some, Abbey's car picked up over 2 tenths.

I bet you can get a 10.99 pass what what you have by moving to the electric water pump, open headers (if you can pull the exhaust and muffler off the car to save the weight that would be best) and your switch to e85. I think all this combined with some good air at Tulsa will get you a ten second slip.

All the little things add up.

to me your converter stall is to high,
you need to try to lighten your car up.
I would say loose the exhaust at the track.

if it were me I would call Dwayne Porter. @ porter racing heads or
fast68plymouth on this board.
that roller cam sounds good but your heads and compression arent right for it.

An electric water pump setup will be worth 2 tenths or so.

You can try open headers, but I doubt it'll make much difference. If you remove the system from the car it will likely go faster just from the weight reduction.

An X pipe will increase power at the expense of sound quality. I just don't care for the sound of an X pipe.

Change those things and do a little more tuning and you should be into the 10s.

After that, the next thing I'd be doing is a head swap. CHIP

Thanks for the responses so far.

On the roller cam I have, Dwayne spec'd that cam for a BS head 470 that I have, but havent put in the car yet.

Not sure I understand how the cam is "wrong" for the 452 heads. As far as compression goes that is why Im asking the question. A certain board member has a certain Challenger that has a 10.8 to 1 446 with a flat tappet cam that is 266@.050, a tick less converter, and a tick less gear and the same weight. 'Course this certain Challenger 60s and ETs pretty dang good. So, isnt 10.8 with aluminum heads more like 9.8 or so with iron heads? See what Im getting at?? I have no problem having a roller ground with around 260 duration, but Im not so sure the one I have wont work?

On the converter, I dont "think" its too much flash speed. I had a 9 inch in it at first that flashed right at 4100-4200. I picked up .16 going to this converter. Its not some mushy race only piece. Slip figures out to 7 percent and drives like a dream on the street.

On the car weight, no way, no dice, no anything its losing anymore weight. Ive cut 150-175 lbs off it (glass hood, manual steering, aluminum this, that, etc) and I refuse to pull interior out, gut this, gut that etc. Its a freakin street car.

Im hoping to pick up with the open pipes based on a conversation with Dwayne. When he ground the 266 roller for me he said it should run better with no exhaust vs. closed exhaust due to not being a split duration, ie more duration on the exhaust side. Since the current flat tappet is not a split, Id hope/figure the results would be the same.

Keep em coming I do appreciate the input.

Small correction made to the above info... assuming you're actually talking about my car.

open pipes 3.5 collecters 18 inchs long

with the 4.30 gears use a 295 or 29.5 10.5 slick

any pics of your car ?

The roller and electric water pump, combined with a free flowing (maybe open?) exhaust will really wake this car up IMHO. A set of standard port aluminum heads, cut to increase compression and make serious use of the e85 will make it an animal with the other changes is place.

Personally, I think the 4.30 gear is KILLING YOU!!! Yes, 3800 is a LOT for a racecar and your 60's must really suck,,,but,,, I think a 4.88 gear would help tremendously!!!

maybe lose some weight off that 3800 also!!!

Re: Help me to the 10s - 10/05/09 12:42 PM

maybe trying to advance your cam centerline from, lets say, 108 to 102 will wake up your motor and better utilize that 4.30 gear you have!!!
