Rear end change, QUIKTREE beware - 09/29/09 05:51 AM

I broke the 8 3/4 in my Duster earlier this year at Woodburn, OR at the car show and swap meet, don't ask how Any ways it broke the right side ladder bar mounts completely off of the rear end housing and ended up twisting and bending the housing beyond use I ended up using a Dana 60 out of a late model Ford:o 3/4 ton pick up with the 3.125 thick axle tubes. I had it narrowed down and change the ends to the Moser Mopar type ends These ends allow you to use the stock inner wheel seals with 35 spline and 30 spline axles The rear end fought me all the way, which is usual, correct? I had to have one axle shorten ( I reused the Strange Engr. 35 spline axles) probally because I had the Dana made 7/16 shorter than the 8 3/4 was, that will help move the tires in a little away from the outer fender lips. I can't beleive how much easiser the car pushes now than before, the 8 3/4 was shorten also but it must have been bent from day one I never check that rear end, until after it broke, for square from side to side I did check the Dana after it was done and I will have to have it straighten this winter, it is off by about 1/4 inch from front to rear(1/2 inch total) and 7/16 top to bottom total. I used a 24 inch machinest straight edge and a carpenters square and measured off of both bearing flanges side to side on the front side at the end of the straight edge twenty inches out and then on the back side and then flipped the rear end up so I could do the same on the top and bottom, I had the wife help me, which made it a lot easier than trying to get the straight edge and carpenter square attach to the housing where they would stay with out moving. The 8 3/4 fought me the first time I installed the axles bad enough on the passenger side that I had to use a block of wood and a BFH to make the axle go in all the way I had bought a used Strange 35 spline spool to use and I figured that it was the problem Really stupid, huh I know, when in doubt, check it out I will from now on I won't be able to tell my friends that I have a Ford rear end in my car now, they will kill me if I do especially Quicktrees freind Thumperdart

Apparently I don`t make enuff power to bend or break mine. Now it`s time for the BIG motor Cab to take advantage of that rear.
