Beehive springs on a street hemi??

Beehive springs on a street hemi?? - 09/29/09 01:02 AM

anyone using Beehives on a 426 style hemi? Seems like a lot of motors are using them now.

I know the argument might be that a lot of motors do not have the valves facing each other . I just wonder how much dual springs would help in that instant when a spring broke.?? Seems like alot of damage would occur with either setup?

This would be for about a 650 net lift solid roller.

Thanks

IMO
I wouldnt go with Bee Hive springs in any kind of a performance Hemi build knowing they "All" like to RPM pretty high...

Maybe they've come up with some beehives that have
more spring pressure but I havent seen any that can
take a roller along with big valves

Why would you want to run a spring that wasn't design for a 426 Hemi head Especially on a roller cam, beehives are a compromised design for the heads that cannot run a 1.550 or bigger diameter valve spring Buy the best springs you can, not a set of beehives, no matter what the prices are

sounds like beehives are off the table. thanks

The better question might be,why don't the engineers make a proper spring for the 426 which takes advantage of the beehives positives? The whole idea is to lose retainer and spring weight for less reciprocating valve train mass right? So design a spring/retainer from the ground up that has the pressures you need but is lighter.

I'm 99% sure Tim at FHO is running bee hive springs on some of his latest hemis
Give him a call before you rule them out.

I agree, call Tim and see if he has a combo like that which is working for him. I use the beehives whenever possible, they are a nice way to drop a bunch of weight in the valve train. A .650 solid roller is pushing the limit though but it might work depending on how hard you're going to spin the motor.

actually i did email with Tim, and that is where the idea originated.
my motor has 4.5 crank in it. I probably would not go past 65-6700 rpm.

A single spring just does not seem right on a Hemi

No beehives on a performance engine. They will break at some point, it's not will they, it's when!

i spoke with Tim today and he mentioned that he has built 50 + motors with Beehive springs

If Tim has a part number of a spring that will work with your cam then I'd trust him. He is a sharp engine builder. There is a place in MI that builds a lot of the valve springs used by the cam companies. I forget the name at the moment but they have a big selection of beehives. My guess is that Tim is hooked up with them directly.

Google is my friend: PAC

he said they were Manleys....... now,who makes Manleys?

Well I'll bet you Mr. Manley isn't making them in the backroom!

Probably PAC or maybe someone else. I think there are three big spring places where all of the cam companies buy their springs. As far as I know, none of the cam companies actually make their own springs anymore.
