M.T. ET Streets vs M.T. Drag radials

M.T. ET Streets vs M.T. Drag radials - 09/21/09 12:53 PM

I have a '71 Challenger with 315/60/15 M.T. Drag radials on it,my problem is I'm blowing the tires of the first 60'. I had a 383 in it that pushed the car 12.25-12.30 with no tire spin at all. Now I have a 470 that is not real crazy it made 644hp/603tq. I did change the vert from a 3800 to a 4500 but the rest is the same. My best is 11.01 but my trap speed 122-124 so you see I'm leaving a lot on the table. So do you think the E.T. streets would be a better tire or should I spend the money on the suspension

I had the 315/60/15 ET street Radials on my Indy EZ Headed 72 Challenger that was 3850lbs All motor and went 10.6 only time out! I had caltracs and went 1.55 60ft and 128.3mph still lean on the wideband...... whats your suspension like....

Re: M.T. ET Streets vs M.T. Drag radials - 09/21/09 01:13 PM

I did have a 1.49 60' but the car was still spinning. I thought the tires would be ok too and seeing your performance I think I have a winter project. At 124mph trap I should be 10.85-10.95 just need it to hook.

Keep the radials. I've been 1.32 sixty foot on the 295-65 M/T Radials. Nothing trick, just the basic Cal-Trac rear suspension.
What do you have for suspension? CHIP

Well when I bought the car it had air shocks so I took them off and got some cal tracks [the car back-halved] but with out the air shocks it sits to low so I had to put some coil overs on to get the hieght back.

I messed that up

Re: M.T. ET Streets vs M.T. Drag radials - 09/21/09 02:24 PM

So the car still has leaf springs? You need new ones if you have to adjust ride height w/ shocks. If you have Cal-Trac bars, call Calvert Racing and get a pair of their monoleaf springs and Rancho shocks. CHIP

Re: M.T. ET Streets vs M.T. Drag radials - 09/21/09 02:41 PM

Chip's right.. Get their leafs and be done with it.. I went 1.30 on radials and 1.28 with slicks.. But the radial was so much better to drive..

Re: M.T. ET Streets vs M.T. Drag radials - 09/21/09 03:24 PM

Another vote to give the tires a chance to work. I just ordered my 3rd set of drag radials and really don't plan on running slicks again. I have been 1.29 60's footbraking and normally click of 1.32's in good weather all day with no problem.

Re: M.T. ET Streets vs M.T. Drag radials - 09/21/09 06:13 PM

I have to give my props to the drag radials especially if you have a heavy car. The side walls are alot stronger/stiffer.

I had a 1.49 60' with the 275 D/R's this weekend and my best on slicks was a 1.45 so these get my vote

I have a pump gas street 3400 lbs. Duster that has gone 1:43 60. ft times on 315x60x15 M/T ET Street Radials at 10:34 and 128.6 MPH, no power adders It is a ladder bar car with coil overs and a track bar, I also have a set of 13:50x30x15 ET Street bias ply tires on the same size rims as the radials. The radials will run quicker and faster on a good track versus the bias ply tires, the bias ply tires will drive easier on a bad track and not spin at the top of first gear like the radials will on a bad track I have found that after driving the radails on the street, the first pass, no matter what kind of burn out I do , will spin bad, the second pass will hook a lot better no matter on the burn out procedures I do run between 17.5 lbs and 22 lbs in the radails and 9.5 to 11.0 lbs on the bias plys on ten inch wide rims. IHTHs BTW, if you run the air pressure to low in the radials they will not hook

How many passes are you getting out of the radials, we run them but after 3 or 4 months of going to the track they are done
Posted By: an8sec70cuda

Re: M.T. ET Streets vs M.T. Drag radials - 09/21/09 09:05 PM

I only get 45 to 50 passes out of them before chords start showing. They go bald at about 25 passes. I do a fair amount of street driving on them too though. CHIP

The old cuda would last a season on a set. With lots of street miles. best 60' 1.36 with leafs. I wouldnt run another tire on that car....Phill

We go to the track 2 or 3 times a month, and if you have a good day that will be like 8-10 passes in one day, at 300 for a set of tires i am looking for something that will last longer, when the tread is there they work great no complaint, when the tread goes there goes the 60 foot.

Re: M.T. ET Streets vs M.T. Drag radials - 09/21/09 10:11 PM

The ET streets will last a ton longer. They will hook on a dirt road.I have run radials for a long time but I went back to ET streets. If you donot run a radial class get the ET streets. Why change the car to work on a radial when it will hook on the ETs?Its just a fad.I personally think the radials are a bad thing. On a fast car you can loop one in a heart beat.

I only got 400 miles out of my ET streets.... Switched to the 315/60 Radials and the car just felt way better going down the track.....

When the tread goes there goes the 60 foot? Myself, and everyone else I know running them, have the opposite happen to us. The tires get better when the tread is gone. They hook great until the chords start showing, then I replace them. Still hook with the chords showing actually. This is the case with the M/T radials anyway. CHIP

Re: M.T. ET Streets vs M.T. Drag radials - 09/22/09 11:41 AM

Good track = radials
Marginal Track = bias ply.
At lest that's my experience. The bias ply tires push the car forward even if they spin a little, while the radials really tend to loose the traction completely if they start to spin.

I have ran any where from 15-19lbs. tried long and short burn outs, lots of water no water. Can any one me with a suspension shop in north east Ohio

let me be more exact.i tried 19lbs the 1st pass, short burnout.very bad tire spin[2.24 60']2nd pass fair burnout and got a 1.439 60' and the 3rd pass did a short burnout and spunn real bad again but drove through it spinning the full 60' ang got a 1.88 60'.i will try more psi after some more heat with the 16lbs.

Mine likes 19.5 to 20 psi. CHIP

Mine are always set between 16 and 20, It will hook wherever, so I adjust rear tire pressure to adjust my reaction times.

Re: M.T. ET Streets vs M.T. Drag radials - 09/22/09 10:41 PM

ET Street radials here...295/65's...best hook is 15.0 cold.
3700# Challenger 496 4600 convertor and 625#'s of torque.
Anything above the 15 and it gets dicey as to whether it'll blow the tires off 20' out.

I'm running the same psi as you guys so I'll work on the suspension. Never made this much power so never gave it to much thought.

Re: M.T. ET Streets vs M.T. Drag radials - 09/23/09 01:58 AM

I would run my 295-65/15 MT radials down to 12 pounds.....1.30 60's...mid 5.60's at 128mph. My suspension appeared to seperate quite a bit out back with never picking up the front tires....maybe not enough weight transfer for the reason for such low psi..

Re: M.T. ET Streets vs M.T. Drag radials - 09/23/09 03:35 AM

This is getting interesting.
I say that I hook good at around 15 cold....just that I've never tried it lower than that because it seems OK at that pressure. So many others on here running up at 18 and 20#'s that it almost made no sense to go lower.....then sit back and complain about the crappy tires!
I'm wondering if there's a little more 60' left in it if I try going down a tad more?
It hooked hard at Pinks in Seattle, and seems good at our tracks here...but there's always that search for that "little bit more".
One thing for sure though....I'll never run a bias slick again...the radials run the track so straight compared to a slick at 11#'s.
Next year I guess.....
