B-1 PSO Dyno Test - Updated Pictures

B-1 PSO Dyno Test - Updated Pictures - 09/15/09 04:11 PM

I finally finished my 588 (4.500X4.625) with the PSO Heads. It has a Custom 55mm camshaft 285/300 at .050 with .954 lift and 15 to 1 compression. I used an old Mega block I have had for a while. I used the new Quick Fuel QFX 1050 carbs. John Marcella built the tunnel ram manifold. The Heads are the first ones I did a long time ago and are a little different than the improved ones we have now. I used a Peterson 5 stage dry oiling system with a Charlie’s pan. The oil pressure was too high for the RPM of the engine and we started moving the cam with positive results. The first pull from 6-7 thousand RPM it made 1099 HP. The Dyno starter failed and ended our day early; it was still making more power on every pull. I know there’s still 20HP there.

1171 hp at 7800 rpm and still climbing at the end of the pull.

Great numbers. A Pro-charged motor could make that on pump gas, with a small hydraulic roller, without breaking a sweat.

Re: B-1 PSO Dyno Test - 09/15/09 07:05 PM

Pick up 20 and you'll be right around 1200.

Awesome power for a straight head. I wonder what it would do with one of your new castings in a full max N/A effort???

Are you going to fix the dyno and run it again up to 8500 or so??? And is the A/F lean or is it just me???

So what were the head's flowing around??

I've seen engines with 17+ compression, well over an inch lift and ring stacks from hell, insanely light cranks and bob weights, among other "tricks". I don't know whats in this engine other than whats listed and whats listed in not on kill. Plus he said the newer PSO head is a better deal....so no, I wouldn't call this max effort.

Killer, but not an "on the edge" deal.

Would youc call it a max build???

I think N/A Pred and B1-TS engine are 1300hp +++ now.

I would say its a good effort. I would imagine the engine has a good nice ring pack, and the parts are pretty light, titanium valves, aluminum rods etc, sheet metal custom intake...
I would say yes..pretty good effort imo.
Sure diff heads, diff cam, diff pistons might more power..but it would be the same engine then either.
Sure it would be easy to spend another $10-$15K on the same engine..for what 5-10% increase in power maybe?

I agree...

Its just that I have a chevy/ford complex.

Those cats don't start talking about a serious effort until every last part is messaged to within an inch of its life and nothing goes in unless its state of the art and on the edge of destruction.

This engine makes real steam in a reasonable RPM range and should be fairly reliable. A nice overall package and mighty fine looking.

Re: B-1 PSO Dyno Test - 09/16/09 03:39 AM

Thanks guys, I will try to answer your questions. Yes we sell the valve covers, the engine is close to a max effort for what it is, light crank and bob weight for a 588, trick ring pack and intake. If I did it all over there would be some changes for sure. Its going in the car next and I will tune it from there. For a 588 I don't think a TS or Predator is much better. I now wish I had used the 4.75 crank I have, but it would not fit with the 55mm cam. The heads flow 476 Intake and 330 Exhaust on our bench. We never touched the carbs, every pull the the break was moving a little and the vac. was going up as the rings were seating. Was not cheap to build and there was a lot of fab work for sure, but none of them are at this level. I changed the dry sump pulley already to lower the oil pressure also. Here is a picture of the car. Thanks again!

Re: B-1 PSO Dyno Test - 09/16/09 12:12 PM

John Marcella/Marcella Manifolds 248-259-6696. Hope to run Top Sportsman if its fast enough, may have to spray it, Time will tell. The VBSFC show its a little fat yet, but the rings are not fully seated and the Dyno had problems. Will tune the rest of the way in the car.

Re: B-1 PSO Dyno Test - 09/16/09 12:27 PM

good luck with it, that is going to be a GREAT looking ride and I bet fast as well. Should be plenty quick enough to run T/S. I'm betting that car goes 7.40's or even quicker off the trailer...

Re: B-1 PSO Dyno Test - 09/16/09 01:12 PM

that manifold was built really by et performance when john worked there wasnt it? i remember talking to pete about it and how much work it was,, a buddy of mine worked at et and told me they had well over 60 hours in it,, had 40 hours in machining the runners,, you might not beable to see it from the pics but each "pair" of runners is made out of billet,, ie, runners 1,1nd 3 are one piece transitioning and ovalish port opening into a round opening in the plenum. very nice work to say the least,, i doubt john would do that today since he has no cnc machine though cary could machine them up but id have to say that would be a 5k manifold,, im sure john would just use a folded runner like all his other stuff.

nice job on the power pete,, generally you are limited to about 2.4hp per cfm of airflow with a motor like yours,, to make 1200 hp you would need 500cfm,, so you maxed out those heads im sure. 1200hp in that car 2300-2400lbs?? shouldnt that be a 7.20 or so? good job

Re: B-1 PSO Dyno Test - 09/17/09 04:30 AM

Thanks Jeff, yes it was built at ET Performance and Cary and John built it. It is trick for sure and I wasn`t sure how well it would work on the engine. ET also worked on the Heads a lot also. We used mine as a start for the new ones with improvments. Someone like yourself could work on the new ones and pick them up, they are not maxed out. 7.20`s would be cool but frist things frist, hope to have it in the car by the weekend.

Finally installed the Engine and finished all the fun with a new install. Its going to the chassis shop for a new hood scoop, front end alignment, 4-link adjustment if nessary and scale for correct corner weights. I am trying to sill get it out this year.

Can a PSO head be made from an as-cast B1 M/C head? or do you start with a raw casting from Brondix?

No you can not use a B-1 M/C Casting, We ordered the castings special from Brodix, they come with no seats, guide holes, spring pockets etc. They are basically a raised port B-1 Head. The valves are appox .600 to .700 longer than B-1 Heads. On the outside it looks the same and has the P part number on them still. They have other changes as well. Call if I can help you out.
