Small block ATI damper?

Small block ATI damper? - 09/14/09 02:40 AM

OK so I have a steel 3 ring internal balance ATI super damper, and unfortunately the incorrect hub....

When I get the correct hub, and then machine it to correct the pulley spacing, will I then have to grind the stock timing tab completely off?

ATI's site mentions they have some sort of modified timing cover available, but I can't find a picture of it anywhere...what does it look like? Is it just a stock cover with an adjustable pointer bolted on?

Here's a quote from ATI's website...if anyone cares to translate, please do:

Quote:

# Note: Hubs are dimensioned to clear the stock cast-in timing tab. The damper face for pulley mounting will be forward of the OEM location by: .150'' for 2-ring internal balance, .450'' for 3-ring internal balance, .750'' for 3-ring external balance. Hubs may be shortened by the listed amount for internal balance and .600'' (.150'' fwd of OEM) on external balance if the tab is cleared, or order ATI cover with adjustable tab (part # 916259). 2-ring internal balance can be installed in the OEM location with minor clearancing of the timing tab and retain OE timing mark.

If it turns out to be a pain/not worth it, I can always use this 3 ring damper on another B engine project and get something else for the small block...

Heard back from Ryan, and it's not gonna work. I'll have to get a big block hub for this one and use it on another project.

Background: The damper assy is actually for a supercharged SBC application, which uses the same outer ring as a BBM (larger bolt holes is the only difference) so I figured with the right hub it would work on SBM also.

Problem is, I totally forgot that SBM and BBM have the timing tab on different sides, so it isn't going to interchange.

Guess I will get the correct hub for a B engine, and save it for the next big block project.
