Rear Shock Travel,,,,what is normal.... ? - 09/13/09 08:23 PM

What is a normal value for the amount of travel for the REAR of a car (eg,,Caltrac setup) (NOT THE SHOCK TRAVEL,,,but the amount the car would/should move without the shocks bolted on)

I wanted to check to make sure i had the correct shock's on my car ( Rancho 9000',,,(RS99116))

I unbolted the shocks,,,and have 3" of rear travel...(without the shocks connected) (18" on compression of the suspension,,,and 21" on full extension of the suspension), again without the shocks hooked up,,,and measuring from the top eye to the bottom eye...

The shock specs on my rancho's,,,, range from
15" on compression
23.75" on extension
total travel distance is 8.750"

SO,,,i think the shocks are "ok",,,ie,,,they are not fully compressed or fully extended at any time.

QUESTION:.....

What is "normal" for the amount of travel the REAR of a car should have ?

Does it matter ?

thanks,

Doug

well I never checked with my caltacs on but I know with the super stock springs it was a lot. it is not as much with the caltacs..might depend on how much preload you on them too?? what is your rear shackle doing ?
