I posted a question on rod bolt stretch guage, and I have gotten a few guys on here who say they bought them and dont use them. I accually didnt plan on using one , but I have a good shinny penny invested in the stroker so I thought id break down and buy one. I accually was going to use Dan aka DRAMs way. He told me on my K1 rods to go incrimently to 40ft/lb a few times, then up to 50ft/lbs, a few times, being carefull not to switch bolts from one hole to another. His theory is to "seat" the threads to each bolt. Then I think I torqued them fianlly to 65ft/lbs with ARP assy lube.

I was going to use this same technique on my Track master rods. Is this wrong? I tend to trust Dan, as he has many many happy customers on here.

Any other sujestions??

partly correct. you should alway's "cycle" the rod bolts before final tightening. i don't recall ever telling you to torque them to 65 ft.lbs. especially if they were arp 2000 bolts.

I honestly dont recall either, I was thinking 65 ft/lbs, but that was a couple years ago. Maybee it was 50ft/lbs.

Or maybe even a different spec all together. What bolts do you have? mike

They are childs bolts. I dont have them in from of me, but Im thinking they say CA-500, but like I said I dont have them in front of me.

They are 7/16 cap screws, and look like ARP 5000 bolts.

I didnt know that ARP made a 7/16 5000 bolt series. They very well may by now.

If so you will need to get the torque and stretch specs from Arp or someone who knows for sure.

The specs for my older 7/16 ARP 2000 is 75ft./bs with ARP lube or a Stretch of approx. .0071

There were No specs for OIL as they stated, Never use oil with these bolts. mike

Again they might be 2000's. I know they are 7/16 bolts in the rods, and I was told they are just like the 5000 ARP's

I dont know for sure, I just know I dont want to screw something up on assy..

Buy the guage and check every bolt for how much torque it takes to make them stretch to a certain length, say .0057 or close. I bought a set of Oliver steel billet rods several years ago for a blown gas street hemi motor and found that there was as much as twenty lbs of torque difference to reach the same length on the bolts in those very expensive rods I called Oliver and was told that was not uncommon on the bolts they used, they like to use a different method on tightening thier bolts

I heard you, about the 2000 vs 5000. When you do get them in front of you. You will be able to tell if they are the Arp 2000 as they are stamped on the head of the bolt, at least mine are.

I also should state that the torqueing instruction specs wasnt Directly from ARP. They were from 440Source. It looks like they retyped ARPs original instructions for the ARP2000 bolts that were supplied withy thier Hbeam rods. So there is a possibilty of a Misprint Typo.

I have not installed mine yet so I better check with ARP myself. mike

I know the stretch guage is the right way to do it. but I can't even remember how many high dollar motors I have seen go together and live a a long life with nothing more than a torque wrench

Kasey, I don't know if this will help or not. I have a set of new scat H beams that have ARP bolts that were sent to me by August Cedarstrand a few years ago. They have an ARP marking on the cap,but no particular #. There is a tag attached from August which reads 65 ft lbs and .0054 stretch with ARP lube. Randy

Thanks Randy... That does help, Im concerned that if I do decide to change the bolts will the rods need to be resized. They are new, so in effect the bolts are new. So ne bolts shouldnt bother.

Kasey, if Randy has the bolts with no markings on the cap , more then likely he will have the less stronger non "2000 ARP" bolts. They will have lessor torque and stretch specs.

You will definately need to find out what ARP bolts you have before douing any final torque assembly.

Let us know when you get these bolts in front of you for review. mike
