Call Dana Corporation Ford had 3.30 ratio gears in there mid 1970 to probally early 1980s 3/4 ton V8 4 speed gas motors, check your local junk yards or your local Ford dealers heavy mechanics, maybe one of them pigeon holed a set BTW, what front suspension is your buddy going to use to hold that Dart up with

Dodge and furd also used a 2.73 gear in the 3/4 1 ton truck in the late 80's and early 90's they were put in a dana 61 which had the inside of the housing machined farther over for the big pinion other wise the same as a dana 60 I will have to check i think i have a set of these gears p.m. me if your interested

I dont think a dana 61 gear cluster works in a 60 housing does it? I know alot of guys that thought they were getting a great deal on a 60 on to find out it was a 61, and there cant be to many 61's out there.

Re: Does anyone make custom gears? - 09/04/09 07:20 PM

all the parts are the same except the side of the housing is machined out 1/4 or so to allow easy fit of the large pinon other wise carier, gear, brgs. all interchange but if you want to run much more than a 4.10 you will need spacers with the thick thick gears

You can get some made but you will pat BIG $$$$ (best estimate is $2000+) for them. If you want a source and contact # PM me.
The cost will include the Engineering, Summary development, material cost, Machine time, Heat treat and matching.

Likely be the same $ for say a 742? And if bought in multiples cost be much better per pair? Sounds like the start of a group buy to me.

why the need for such a gear? even with a diesel you would think something a little lower would work? is he racing daytona with it?

Re: Does anyone make custom gears? - 09/05/09 02:18 PM

It is impossible to make a ratio that high for a stock Dana 60 housing/carrier.

Re: Does anyone make custom gears? - 09/05/09 02:36 PM

Thank all of of you for your replies. Since this build is a diesel and is being setup for 1/4 mile racing. The RPM limit on the engine is 4500. The trans will be a turbo 400 built by Neal Chance. According to the Wallace cal. A 2.86 would do the job. But if you allow a little for converter slip it needs to be a little taller. Jim

taller tire.

Re: Does anyone make custom gears? - 09/05/09 02:54 PM

I don't think the stock housing can be easily modified.

You could run a 3.07 geared Dana 61 rear.

You could also try a used set of 2.47-2.76 gears in a Nodular 9" casting with Daytona pinion support and 35 spline Detroit Locker or spool. I don't know how the 28 spline pinion would hold up, however.

Quicktree, don't have any more room for taller tires. He doesn't want a 9" in it. It's a Mopar thing. Jim

When looking in a salvage yard
what vehicle and year
would have the Dana 61 with 3.07 ?

I would like to get one to replace a Chrysler 9.25 with 3.21, or I would like to find a QuikChange diff.

Back in the 1980s
there was a guy near Mt Vernon KY
who just personally liked cutting gears
and had an extensive shop with much older gear cutting machinery.
He could make nearly any gear style including hypoid and did one-off jobs for the mining and trucking industry.

I am not sure if he is still alive or still working.

Run a one speed glide in there and let that torque go to work!

Some late '70s-early '80s Ford 3/4 ton trucks used Dana 61 rears. You also can use the front ring and pinon out of an early '90s Dodge diesel/automatic 4 x 4 truck in the Dana 61 rear housing.

A Dodge/Cummins truck with a 3sp torqueflite is probably the easiest place to find them. '89 through 91.5 model years I believe. Non intercooled trucks. Anything with an OD was 3.54 or steeper.

with a turbo 400?
The nine inch would be less intrusive into the "mopar thing" realm.
maybe a gear vendors unit would help with a dana 61.
interesting build.

I had a set of those gears, sold them to a member for $50..I always thought those would make a sweet street gear for a large engine 550+cubes and a set of 30" tall tires.

Re: Does anyone make custom gears? - 09/06/09 06:52 PM

There were bread delivery type trucks built with 4 cyl Cummins engines. They had adapters on them and ran turbo 400 trans. Dennis has acquired on of these setups after talking with Neil Chance Trans. They have said the can set this up to be bullet-proof behind the Cummins. With the motor limited to 4500 and tire limited to 32". The rear gear needs to be about 2.70. Jim

Hey jim what kind of times does your friend think his dart will run? also how much torque does he think it will make? I found this in my newest Diesel power mag. SO if a 5.9 cummins will fit in a 67 camaro i do not see why it wont fit in a dart. Tell him i said best of luck to him and would like to see some pics when he is done. Mopar65

Interesting about the Cummins 4 cyl diesels in the bread delivery trucks with GM automatics.

Would that same bell housing made for the Turbo 400 allow you to use a
4 cylinder Cummins
with one of the new GM 6T70 six speed automatics ?

Bobby, what mag is that article on the Camaro in? I don't know if that late GM trans will bolt up in place of a Turbo 400 or not. He's thinking it should make 1500 lb ft of torque and 1000 HP. He want's to run in the 8's with it. He was very successful with his pulling tractor. Knows his stuff on diesel's. Jim
