shifter position on a833 od

Does the shifter position here look correct? I wanted to confirm before drilling holes in my new bracket.

Is it going to be the height you want it in the car? it looks like it is higher than any stock shiters I've seen in A,B or E body cars

I don't know what your putting it in but the first thing I would do is turn the front 3-4 gear linkage arm so it face's up. Next thing you need is a bolt in the hole at the top of the shifter assembly . It's the main bolt for holding the shifter.

the overdrive trannys come with the 3-4 arms reversed so third gear becomes overdrive when the shifter is in 4th gear position I have several of them and I'm thinking of reversing the reversed 3-4 arm so the gear shift lever will be in the third gear position when it is shifted into O.D., which will provide more room between the seats and the shifter which may also provide some entertaining conversations with some gear head passengers As far as the missing bolt, he is using a C clamp to hold the shifter and the mount in place before making the final decesion on the location, I think

Years ago I bought a car that somebody had flipped the 3/4 lever back to it's normal orientation for a non OD unit...

Can you imagine the look on my face when I unknowingly downshifted when I thought I was upshifting... at 6200 or so.

Needless to say the motor had to come back out. I even remember thinking to myself how odd it was that fourth gear was smaller than third when inspecting the box. It's amazing how dangerous a few 17 year old kids can be with a Craftsman basic wrench and socket kit in mom and dad's garage!

With all of that said, what is that setup going into? Has the trans had any work done to it?

First off, what chassis is that going into - B body, A body, etc? The shifter mounting position is relative to the opening in the floor, and that varies by the chassis type.

Have you done any floor tunnel modifications?

That trans looks to me like one from a van. The tail housing has the dual mounting positions - forward position would be for a B Body, rearward for an E body. The van/truck application uses a plate unique to that use. Not sure if it would position the shifter for a pass car - even a B body.


If it were my trans I'd want those shift rods parallel to the ground, like they are for a stock setup. That means lowering the location where the shifter mounts to the plate.

Big Block Dart has some tech stuff to where a guy made a plate to use that same trans in an A body. Might help with your build. He did however use the A body shift rods. It looks like your shift rods are the original ones from a van or truck application.

Just thinking out loud but like the others have said
it looks way to high.... I'm guessing you have about
3" of clearance from the trans to the tunnel and if
thats the case your shifter would be up next to the
seat.
Also as stated if you put the arms level with the shifter
arms it'll have a better leverage for the shift
