Smallblock Distributor Rotor Phasing....

Smallblock Distributor Rotor Phasing.... - 08/31/09 01:39 PM

I searched on here and found the msd website on how to check it. Either I couldn't quite grasp it or it was a little vague.
Using a stock electronic distributor, I drilled a decent size hole behind #1 terminal, Hooked the timing light up to #1 plug wire, shined the light through the hole while holding the rpm's around 3k rpm. The rotor was 1/4" to the right of the terminal, between #1 and #8 terminal.
Using the adv. function of the timing light, I set it to 36 (what the timing is set to at 3000rpm, so if I look at the timing marks on crank it shows TDC) the rotor goes to approx 1/2" to the right between #1 and #8. It is even farther away from #1.
To me, this looks bad. How do I fix this, oblong the holes that hold the ignition pick-up? Which way would I have to go?

Thanks guys.

The easiest way if you have room is to run one of the big HEI style caps because they make a indexible rotor for that and it makes it real simple. With just a regular stock cap and rotor, the only way to do it is file or elongate the holes in the cap and or rotor to achieve what you need.

Thats what I thought. Can't run the different cap, I don't think the Fast guys would like that.

I've seen some OEM electronic distributors with 3 key-ways in the reluctor.

It's hard for me to explain how you do it, even though I know what I'm saying.

Make sense?

Wow, thats cool. never knew they made such a thing. I wonder if MSD makes an indexable reluctor like that?

1st you don't use the advance feature on your timing gun 0 only better a straight single strobe.

MSD makes indexable rotors.
now you could use the - feature on your timing light if it has one - till it lines up where you like and that will tell you how many degree's you have to move back to get lined up where you want.

Unless i am mistaken, MSD only makes those rotors for the Big HEI cap and not the normal small cap...or do they make them for both?

Hook up the vacuum advance and watch what happens to the rotor if you really want a surprise.

I started to re-machine reluctors a long time ago because of this very problem. The best solution for the stock distributor is to index the rotor so that you split the difference between the advanced position and the non-advanced position. If you keep the rotor close to the tower on average you shouldn't have a mis-fire situation.

So I should be looking at it with the timing light not advanced. It is around 1/4-3/8" to the right towards #8 terminal at 3k rpm.
If I take the reluctor off, and get a new slot in it, which way would I go? To the right or left of the original slot? How far over? Anybody have an idea on where to start?

Thanks guys.
