Stock Rod Small blocks

Stock Rod Small blocks - 08/25/09 01:10 AM

Wondering who else is running stock rods in their motor still, how much power you're making and the number of passes you have on them.

My 346 has propelled my 3500# Dart to 12.30@107.47. I've put roughly 400 passes on the rods and a number of street miles and foolish behavior. I shift the car at 5600 and go through the traps at 6000. Stock rods and bolts, cast piston, hyd. cam, etc etc , the limiter is set at 6200, so the motor isn't spun hard. How worried would you be? The engine currently has 256 passes on it since the last rering/bearing job, and all was well then, just curious if I'm on borrowed time or if I can still sleep well at night.

Small blocks last forever, i have see them get just a beating and still going strong, with have a 340 in my kids car that was built 10 years ago, raced in a sprint car and then drag raced for years and street driven, with 2 ring and bearing jobs in that time, still runs great today hauls a 3300# A body to mid 12s with a small cam.

I have no idea how many passes the motor has on it, but the rods have been in the motor since about 1996. Dad made about 30 passes a year and I maybe make 50 since I got it in 2005. The car has run a best of 11.28,366 cubes, 11.8:1,and I turn it 7200. I think it's a ticking time bomb, but it hasnt blown up yet? I'm hoping it will last a little while longer so I until I can get a new motor built.

Thousands of street miles and a little over 500 quarter mile passes on my 340 with stock rods that runs high 12's. Most I've wound it up to is 6,200 rpm, usually I shift at 5,700 and trap rpm is 5,600.

We had a stock crank and rod 365 except arp rod bolts and sprayed it with 125 shot for over 500 passes, sold it to a guy that sprayed it for 2 more years and it still runs good , motor saw 7k on spray, I bought it back a few months ago just so I can dissect it and check it out

I ran low 12s and lots and lots of street miles on my stock rod 340. It had a 6000shift point and I beat on it regularly(all the time i was 18 lol). Stock crank broke behind the last rod journal and it wasn't really fatal. It still ran, and still had oil pressure but it sounded like someone beating a frying pan with a hammer at idle, got quite under load. I put eagle rods and another crank in it and was back in action.

stock rods here, spin 'er to 6500 or so every time i take it out, over 15000 abusive miles on it, if it breaks, i get to build a bigger motor, so not too concerned.

Mine has 273 rods with good bolts, shift @6000 and trap out @6500. Has run a best of 11.32 @3600 lbs. shifting at 6500 and trap about the same. 4.56 gear and 29.5 slicks, same block pistons and crank since 99, rods have been in since 02 and while it don't get beat on as much as it used to, It has many many rounds on it. But it is footbrake only, no transbrake and 2 step.

I put a set of Viper rods in one of my 340's all
balanced ... it ran about 2 seasons till a rod let
go.... guess they didnt like 7500 rpm and that was
with some fairly light pistons..... they all break, its
just a matter of time and rpm

I have run a best of 11.24 @121 for been together for 8 years now hundreds of passes plus thousands of street miles

360 stock rods, stock crank, cast pistons, e-heads,
'68 barracuda 3200# dyno at 421 at the rear wheels

I'm running a stock crank and rods in my 360 and spraying 150 shot...tons of passes on it and its still holding up...coming through the traps at 6900 rpm's. This winter i'm going to forged H-beam rods and forged crank so I can spray a 250 shot.

My AMC Spirit currently has a MP crate shortblock, ported Eddys, RPM Air Gap, 750 vac secondary, 3500 stall, low gearset 904, 3.89 gears, 325/50/15 BFG Drag Rads, 3100lb race wt. N/A has went 11.30 at 119 - 1.50 60', 6200 shifts,6100 trap rpm. On 100 shot went 10.51 at 126 - 1.42 60', 6200 shifts, 6450 trap rpm (window switch shuts NOS off at 6400). About 12K miles and 150 passes on motor. I try to keep rpms under 6500 on the stock rods. I'm considering a 3.50 gear and a 150 shot - should go through the traps at about 130 off the chip.

Re: Stock Rod Small blocks - 08/25/09 03:34 AM

My stock headed solid cammed 360 went 11.80`s to 12.00 flat when running it`s best w/thousands of street miles and hundreds of passes w/stock rods till it finally broke a rod and destroyed the block. But, I purposely tried to kill it and it was easy at 7000 r`s on and off the gas in second gear. After market rods are cheap insurance in my opinion and should be in any hard running motor.

Re: Stock Rod Small blocks - 08/25/09 11:37 AM

if you're only turning it to 6K RPM, they'll last a looooong time, even with a fairly heavy piston, and at that, it'll probably be the bolts that fail, not the rod itself. what kills rods are the inertial forces from a heavy piston on the end of it suddenly changing direction. those forces increase IIRC by the square of the speed (say, 2000 to 4000 rpm is double the speed, but it'll be 4x the inertial forces). lighter pistons help, higher rod ratio helps due to lower piston accelerations for a given RPM.

I ran a W2 340 W stock rods and arp bolts. We polished the beams. Ran 10.90s 7700 rpms I had those rods in there for years.

Re: Stock Rod Small blocks - 08/25/09 08:05 PM

I built my street/strip 360 in 1998 and it's still going strong after a ton of street driving and probably over 500 passes at the track. Plus Lord only knows how many street stomps.

Stock block, rods and cast crank with Eddy heads. Shift and hit the traps at 6200 RPM.

New best ET is in the sig line.
